First Time Hacker Shut Down 20% of Dark Web in Fight Against Child Porn
A vigilante hacker associated with Anonymous managed to take down twenty percent of the dark web last week.

A vigilante hacker associated with Anonymous managed to take down twenty percent of the dark web last week after discovering that large amounts of child pornography were being hosted by one provider. Visitors to more than 10,000 sites hosted by Freedom Hosting II were met with an error message explaining why the site was taken down.
According to an article by dark web researcher Sarah Jamie Lewis, "Freedom Hosting II (FHII) is one of the largest onion web hosting providers – offering free space and bandwidth to anyone who signs up for an account."
The hacker told Motherboard they originally gained access to the web hosting provider on January 30th, stating, "Initially I didn't want to take down FH2, just look through it." According to Motherboard, "they then allegedly found several large child pornography sites which were using more than Freedom Hosting II's stated allowance. Usually, Freedom Hosting II has a quota of 256MB per site, but these illegal sites comprised of gigabytes of material, the hacker claimed.
'This suggests they paid for hosting and the admin knew of those sites. That's when I decided to take it down instead,' the hacker said. At the time of writing, the hacker claims to have found 10 child pornography sites with approximately 30GB of files."
The original Freedom Hosting site was targeted by Anonymous for hosting child pornography and was eventually taken over by the FBI. The alleged owner of the site, Eric Eoin Marques, was taken into custody in Ireland in 2013 after being named the world's "largest facilitator of child porn." He faces extradition to the United States.
Included in the error message from last week's hack was a link to the 21-step process showing how the hacker took over the site, as well as a dump of system files. The hacker explained user data was not dumped to prevent the child pornography from being shared, but that "he will provide a copy to a security researcher who will then hand it to law enforcement."
"This is in fact my first hack ever," the hacker revealed. "I just had the right idea."
Not bad for their first time.

DreamHost Debuts House-Made Website Builder Remixer
DreamHost has launched its new website builder, Remixer, which it is offering for free with any DreamHost hosting plan, and for free with domain registration purchases for a limited time.
After hearing from customers that existing website building platforms were not as easy to use as promised, DreamHost started working on Remixer, which its software developers built in-house using Kubernetes running on top of DreamHost's OpenStack cloud product.
"A short while ago we noticed a strange trend among a significant number of our customers," Ralph Castro, Remixer product manager said in a blog post. "Many of them would sign up for hosting service, but would never upload any content to their domains. For many users, building a website is just too intimidating. Even WordPress, as powerful as it is, can be a daunting experience for a new user."

Costa Mesa councilman sues over personal website converted to host porn reviews
Costa Mesa City Councilman Allan Mansoor is suing an unnamed party in federal court, claiming his personal website was taken over after he failed to renew the domain name registration and it has since been converted into reviews of pornographic movies.
In the suit filed Wednesday, Mansoor claims his internet domain name, AllanMansoor.com, was "hijacked" and repurposed as a website to advertise pornography, according to his complaint.
"We're just trying to get to the bottom of this and trying to get my website back," Manssor said.
The defendant added the title "Allan's Adult Reviews: Best Porn Site" to the domain name, the complaint says. Paired with each review is a "Join for just $1" subscription tab. Mansoor said in his complaint that he believes the defendants are compensated by porn websites each time someone views a review or clicks the join tab.
Mansoor is seeking damages and the transfer of the domain name. The complaint states Mansoor believes the defendants are "familiar to him and live in Orange County" and could be acting on behalf of someone.
The website was originally used for political purposes from 2002 through 2016, when an unknown party acquired the domain name and used it to disparage Mansoor, the suit says.
"Defendants acted in bad faith by appropriating the domain name to operate a website titled 'Allan's Adult Reviews' with the intent of disparaging Plaintiff's good name, embarrassing him, and profiting from his goodwill by diverting people from Plaintiff's website," the suit states.
Mansoor failed to renew the domain registration in 2015, causing it to expire. He said in his complaint that he thinks the first published review on the converted site occurred in January 2016.
The content displayed on Mansoor's site is not found anywhere else on the web, the suit said, leading him to believe his website was specifically chosen to host the reviews.
Mansoor was elected to the City Council last year after serving a stint in the state Assembly and on the Costa Mesa City Council from 2002 to 2010, gaining national attention for his tough stance on illegal immigration.
"Each of plaintiff's political campaigns was contentiously fought, and in more than 12 years of holding public office, as well as in his prior career as an Orange County sheriff's deputy, he has been outspoken on many controversial public issues," Morgan wrote. "While plaintiff has many supporters, he also has many detractors. There are many people, known and unknown, who would like to embarrass him as retribution for his public actions."
