Several top-tier universities host student clubs, workshops dedicated to kinky sex

Princeton University has become the latest Ivy League institution to host a club for students who seek to explore sexual desires that delve into bondage, domination, sadism and masochism, underscoring a larger trend found at many top-tier universities.

The student-led club, Princeton Plays, launched earlier this month after Princeton's student government voted to officially recognize it. It joins Harvard's "Munch," Columbia's "Conversio Virium" and Cornell's "Crunch" clubs as active student BDSM groups in the Ivy League.

Several "Sex Week" campus events at various high-profile colleges over the years have also included workshops on the sexual subculture, which can include ropes, whips, blindfolds, flogging, master-servant role play and much more.

For example, the University of Chicago's annual sex week observance typically includes a BDSM workshop. In 2014, a presentation there dubbed "Taste of Kink" gave students an opportunity to explore "sensations that can be generated by floggers, rope, electricity and more." Likewise, in 2016, the university hosted a "sexual pain" workshop and BDSM tutorials. And earlier this year it hosted "Intro to rope bondage."

Also earlier this year, at the University of Michigan, an "Ins and Outs of Kink" workshop included "introductory kink and BDSM concepts." Workshops on BDSM at that university date back to at least 2014.

"Kinky Trojans" is the name of a BDSM club at the University of Southern California. Late last month, it hosted a meeting on "kinky toys of all kinds: impact, bondage, a bit of edge play, you name it," according to its Facebook page.

Meanwhile, BDSM at the Ivy Leagues is in full swing.

In 2015, Harvard University hosted a workshop as part of its sex week titled "Work Hard, Fuck Hard: The Guide to BDSM in the College Dorm Room." And just last month Harvard hosted a workshop called "Unleashed: Kink 101" as part of its sex week events.

Also last month at Columbia, its "Conversio Virium" student members were offered a "hands-on rope bondage" workshop, according to its website.

Cornell's "Crunch" club meets Tuesdays, according to its website.

The newest Ivy League BDSM group, Princeton Plays, aims to "provide a safe space for students interested in non-traditional relationships" and "to promote values of sexual inclusivity and affirm that all types of safe and consensual activity between individuals is valid," according to The Daily Princetonian, which reported on its launch earlier this month.

The Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Student has also recognized the group, which hopes to meet twice a month, The Princetonian reported. With that, the group will now have access to some funding from the student government and may reserve university rooms for their meetings.

The College Fix contacted the Princeton Undergraduate Student Government and Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Student via email to determine if the group would use university facilities for their BDSM activities. Neither replied to the emails.

Members of Princeton Plays said in The Princetonian that the group "hopes to provide a safe space for students interested in non-traditional relationships … to promote values of sexual inclusivity and affirm that all types of safe and consensual activity between individuals is valid."

In an interview an anonymous member discussed how the group started: "Through conversation, we kinda realized that we wanted a space for this on campus, more than what was out here, which was nothing."

The College Fix contacted Ivy Truong, who reported on the new club for The Princetonian, to see if she could convince members from Princeton Plays to comment on the group's intentions. Truong replied that the group declined to offer comment to The Fix.

The White House says the updated site features a more user-friendly design and more intuitive search capabilities, as well as a cleaner and more elegant display.

The Trump administration says the new website will save taxpayers $3 million annually. Officials say the earlier version of WhiteHouse.gov was built using the same infrastructure as the website for President Barack Obama's White House, which cost $6 million a year to maintain. The new website, which was developed by an in-house White House team with help from an outside vendor, will cost 60 percent less, officials said.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Three men pleaded guilty to creating a "botnet" known as Mirai that was used to paralyze chunks of the internet in 2016.

Paras Jha, Josiah White and Dalton Norman admitted to one count of conspiracy in plea agreements filed earlier this month. Federal prosecutors in Alaska and New Jersey said Wednesday that the men created a collection of hundreds of thousands of computers and internet-connected devices — including routers, webcams and other devices — infected with malware that they controlled.

A broad "denial of service" attack waged using the Mirai botnet knocked services such as Twitter and Netflix offline in October 2016. Prosecutors said they don't believe the three men were responsible for that attack, as Jha had already posted the code for Mirai to online criminal forums.

Jha, 21, of Fanwood, New Jersey, and Norman, 21, of Metairie, Louisiana, also pleaded guilty to a separate conspiracy charge for using another powerful botnet for a 'clickfraud' scheme, used to artificially generate advertising revenue by making it appear that a real user clicked on an online ad.

Jha, a former Rutgers University computer science student, also pleaded guilty Wednesday in a New Jersey federal court to a computer fraud charge for allegedly executing a series of attacks from 2014 through 2016 that paralyzed the university's networks, often during high-stress times such as mid-term or final exams.

Jha's attorney, Robert Stahl, said Jha "is a brilliant young man whose intellect far exceeded his emotional maturity" and that he is "extremely remorseful and accepts responsibility for his actions." He said the guilty pleas "are the first step in his evolution into adulthood and responsibility."

A prominent cybersecurity journalist, Brian Krebs, had outed Jha and White back in January as likely suspects involved in creating the Mirai botnet.

White, 20, of Washington, Pennsylvania, and Norman could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday.

The investigation originated in Anchorage after some internet-connected devices in Alaska were discovered to have been affected by the Mirai malware.

Bill Walton, a special agent who oversees the Anchorage FBI's Cyber Crime unit, said the botnet's name is a reference to a Japanese anime called Mirai Nikki, which loosely translated into English means "future diary."

"The co-conspirators were all just a fan of that particular anime," Walton said.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) today announced that Amazon Internet Services Private Ltd (AISPL), an Indian subsidiary of the Amazon Group that undertakes the resale and marketing of AWS Cloud services in India, has achieved full cloud service provider (CSP) empanelment and successfully completed the STQC (Standardisation Testing and Quality Certification) audit from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) for cloud services delivered from the AWS Asia Pacific (Mumbai) Region.

This certification sees AISPL join a list of approved providers that meet pre-defined government standards of quality, availability, and security. With 52 global security certifications, attestations, assurance programmes, and quality audits already achieved, such as ISO 9001, SOC1, SOC2, SOC3, and more, AWS is the first global cloud service provider to earn this status in India. MeitY advises government bodies and departments to procure cloud services only from the empaneled and audit-compliant CSPs.

"We are pleased that AWS is the first cloud computing portfolio to announce full empanelment by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The government has been driving the mission to promote e-governance for empowering citizens, and enabling access to digital and cloud-enabled services for its nodal agencies and public sector organisations. The empanelment process includes compliance with new global security standards and guidelines ISO 27017 and ISO 27018. AWS public sector customers in India include Andhra Pradesh State Skill Development Corporation, Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), CSC e-Governance Services (set up by the Ministry of Electronics & IT), Gujarat Technical University, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), and Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati.

Since the launch of AWS Asia Pacific (Mumbai) Region in June 2016, more than 120,000 active customers including Tata Motors, NDTV, Lupin, Future Group, and Shoppers Stop have adopted AWS Cloud for a broad range of applications such as e-governance applications, website hosting, big data analytics, mobile applications, e-commerce platforms, mission critical business applications such as SAP, Oracle, and Microsoft, among many other use cases.
