This Glorious Web-Collage is Made Entirely from Pieces of Old GeoCities Pages
It's Cameron's World now—the rest of us are just living in it.
To wit, Cameron's World is a web-collage and de facto time machine that offers visitors a glimpse into the Internet of old. The project (link at bottom) is an enormous collection of text, GIFs and other visuals culled from thousands of archived GeoCities pages. For those of you too young to remember GeoCities (R.I.P., 1994-2009), here's a history lesson courtesy of Cameron himself:
GeoCities was a web-hosting service that made it possible for people to build their own home pages. During the '90s, users from all over the world created personalized corners of the Internet. By the time the U.S. service shut down in October 2009, there were more than 38 million GeoCities pages. Cameron's World brings together archived material from thousands and thousands of these sites.
As you may imagine, Cameron's World reads like an Internet time capsule with a decidedly surrealist bent, incorporating everything from an animated skull playing a trumpet to the words "Feel free to visit all my cave then tell me what do you like and what not" to a button marked "Steve Buscemi Greetings!" The massive collage is divided into about two dozen distinct sections, which become increasingly bizarre as you scroll. One could easily spend hours sorting through all the insane digital flotsam and jetsam Cameron has aggregated.
Despite the eye-popping, absurd and often hilarious appearance of Cameron's World, the message behind the project is actually quite profound. "In an age where we interact primarily with branded and marketed web content, Cameron's World is a tribute to the lost days of unrefined self-expression on the Internet," Cameron explains in a statement. "This project recalls the visual aesthetics from an era when it was expected that personal spaces would always be under construction."
Cameron (full name: Cameron Askin) is a full-time freelance designer and part-time artist living in Berlin. Today, he is a full-time Internet hero as well. GeoCities, we hardly knew ye.
