4-H hosting chicken keepers symposium

Keeping chickens as pets and for eggs is not just a fad, it has become a healthy staple for foodies, families and gardeners alike.

Residents who want to start keeping chickens on their property need to learn some basic rules and skills.

So on July 23,  the state 4-H Small Animal Advisory Council will host a Chicken Keepers Symposium from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Camden County Cooperative Extension Office, 1301 Park Blvd., Cherry Hill.

This symposium is for urban and small flock chicken keepers, 4-H and FFA members, and anyone thinking about getting chickens or starting a flock.

Topics that will be covered during the symposium include: The Basics of Chicken Keeping; Urban Chicken Keeping: Know the Rules; Youth & Poultry — A Wonderful Combo; The Most Common Chicken Keeping Mistakes; How the Hen Lays Eggs & Why She Stops; and Poultry Nutrition — The Basics & Myths Debunked.

The $30 registration fee for the Chicken Keepers Symposium includes lunch and program supplies. Preregistration is required by July 11. Registration information is available on the New Jersey 4-H website http://nj4h.rutgers.edu/smallanimals/chicken-keepers/

The 4-H Youth Development Program is part of Rutgers Cooperative Extension, a unit of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station. 4-H educational programs are offered to all youth, from kindergarten to one year out of high school, on an age-appropriate basis.
