Scale-up FileMaker WebDirect Web Applications using FmPro Migrator 7.47

[prMac.com] Fremont, California - .com Solutions Inc. has released FmPro Migrator Platinum Edition 7.47 with 30 improvements making transitioning from FileMaker Pro to a PHP web application practical and affordable. In addition to supporting FileMaker Pro, PHP web applications can also be built from Microsoft Access and Visual FoxPro databases applications.

Benefits to performing a PHP Conversion with FmPro Migrator Platinum Edition Include:* Scale-up beyond 100 concurrent users - FileMaker WebDirect provides tremendously rich desktop-like functionality in a web application. But that functionality comes with a performance impact to the single database server supporting the application. The PHP web application generated by FmPro Migrator improves performance by having its functionality implemented within the user's web browser, the web server and the database server. Performance can be further improved by adding more web and database servers, to scale u p way beyond a WebDirect configuration.

* Own your application source code - Having the source code to your app means that you can move your application to the hosting provider of your choice at any time. Need to customize the look of the app? You can do this too. There is no lock-in when you own the source to your web application, any feature or graphical element can be changed or enhanced. Host the web application on in-house servers for data security reasons or use the cloud hosting provider of your choice.

* Avoid monthly/annual billing - Some systems lock you in to a single vendor, where the application will stop running if you can't afford to pay. When you own the application, you only pay for economical web hosting. And even the hosting cost can be eliminated by installing the web application and database on your own servers.

* Reuse existing business logic - You can utilize existing business logic refined over many years by performing an automated conversio n project. There is no need to waste thousands of dollars documenting and re-implementing functionality which already works. Your existing database serves as the software specification for your project.

* Keep the existing GUI - Reduce re-training costs by using the same familiar graphical interface in the web application. The GUI represents an important part of the overall application functionality just like the underlying business logic.

* Cross platform/device compatibility - A web application requires no configuration on local computers. The generated web application works with any modern web browser, running on any computer platform or mobile device.

* 30 Day Money Back Guarantee - Buy FmPro Migrator Platinum Edition software with confidence. We would like the opportunity to help you achieve success with your project, but if it just doesn't work out, a no-hassle refund will be provided.

Changes with this release include:* Fixed a memory leak during batch importing of layouts, which could cause a crash.* Fixed an issue reading the correct number of fields with the Demo version when performing Access to FileMaker conversions.* Updated LiveCode template stack to v48. Added support for SQL Yoga 1.1.1 dbconn_setVendor feature for SQLite connections, adding "binary, extensions" options. This change means that SQLite BLOB column data will be readable with 3rd party SQLite tools.* Fixed a cosmetic issue with the display of the main window tabbed folder on MacOS X Yosemite.* Fixed a cosmetic issue with the display of the Field Details button on the Migration Process window in Table Consolidation operating mode.* Fixed a cosmeetic issue with the display of Unicode characters in the display of Custom Functions, TOs in the Migration Process window.* Fixed an issue updating Layout TO names containing Unicode on the Layouts tab in the Migration Process window.* Fixed an issue in which some CREATE TABLE long column names would get terminated with the @ symbol.* Improved the error message when connecting to MySQL database servers.* Improved the error message displayed when copying tables into FmPro Migrator via the clipboard, to suggest extracting the app from the ZIP/DMG file prior to running the app.-- PHP Conversion Changes* Fixed an issue with escaped quotes in FileMaker calculations causing a syntax error in the generated PHP code written into CakePHP Model files.* Fixed the incorrect display of Spry Tabbed Panels, and background color of Spry tabbed panels from FileMaker 13 database layouts.* Improved compatibility with newer PHP versions by adding app/Model/DataSource/CakeSession.php file, with 'session.auto_start' => 0, line of code commented.* Enabled the use of the Add and Delete buttons on the navigation toolbar in Find mode for applications created using the "Read Only" data access feature. This change allows users of Read Only applications to Add and Delete their own find requests.* Added the conversion of Fil eMaker global variables into PHP SESSION variables for the Set Variable, IF and ELSEIF script steps.* Added the automated commenting of beforeSave()/afterSave() functions within Model files when creating a PHP web application having Read Only Data Access.* Improved the code in the ToolbarsController.php file to reduce memory usage for large data sets, largely eliminating out of memory errors with MySQL queries.* Fixed an issue with the display of Query operators using UTF8 unicode.* Fixed issues with User login code.* Removed support for CakePHP 1.x from the PHP Conversino GUI menu.* Fixed a display issue with Spry Tabbed Panels with only one Panel on the form.* Fixed an issue with Custom Value List items containing Unicode characters not displaying properly.Note: It is recommended that ASCII characters be used for Value List names, since these get used to construct function names.* Fixed an issue with FileMaker 13/14 Tab Panel names and font color not being retrieved.* Improved Spr y TabbedPanel processing by enabling the background color of the Tab to be different from the background color of the panel containing the objects.* Improved the PHP Conversion "Missing PK Column" error dialog to suggest copying the tables into FmPro Migrator again, after making changes in the source database.

Pricing and Availability:FmPro Migrator Platinum Edition is priced at ($600) per developer, you can build an unlimited number of web applications having up to 250 forms/reports/layouts with FmPro Migrator during the term of the license key.

Choosing the right web host for your needs

In today's online world, a business organization certainly has to pay attention to aspects such as:

    • email marketing campaigns,• crafting and sustaining great content• social media marketing and networking and• choosing the right host for its website.

While there are many things that a business organization can do absolutely correctly, a wrong choice for web hosting services can nullify every other effort. Here are a few things that you can keep in mind when it comes to choosing the right host for your needs.

    Doing your homework

As with almost anything else in the business world, the choice of the right web hosting service has to begin with you doing a bit of homework. This homework can be something as basic as understanding the different types of hosting that are available, figuring out which host is the correct fit for your industry and even whether you should go for a free web host or commercial solution.

It would be a very good idea for you to assess the kind of hosting that you need. Broadly speaking, the different types of hosting include:• shared or virtual hosting which means that you end up sharing servers with the web host's clients, and the least expensive option.• co-located hosting which means that you supply the server, that you have purchased, to your web host• dedicated hosting which simply means that you lease a server from the web host.

Each of these types of hosting come with their own ecosystem of support and maintenance services and availability of the network and performance and quality guarantees as well.

Your initial homework should also include a bit of market research. This market research can encompass reading reviews about web hosting sites on high quality forums.

    Reputation of the web host

Experts suggest that you should evaluate a particular web host by features such as stability and flexibility of services. In this particular area, bigger is not always better. It is therefore good to delve into aspects such as:• client testimonials and references about the web host,• longevity and reputation in the business of the market,• ownership of the company and• their ability to understand your requirements and come up with a service package for you.

You should also be able to find out about the data center network that your web hosting service provider has. Keeping your website safe and secure is an extremely important aspect of web host's portfolio. One of the ways in which they should be able to help you with this is by providing regular data backups and having the latest security measures in place.

    Range of features

There are many things that you require from your web host so it would be a good idea for you to figure out what are the features that they can offer. Such features often get clubbed into various kinds of tariff plans and therefore, it would be extremely useful for you to find out what are the kinds of plans that your web host can offer.

Some of features that you can check out are:

    • availability of 24 x 7 technical support• uptime guarantee• the ability to support hosting of multiple sites via add-on domains• capacity to scale up to meet your growing business needs• security of the services which could include backup copies of your website• gigabytes of web space• support for your blog• monthly visits that can be supported and• time taken to activate your website.

It would also be good to figure out what kinds of applications your web host will deliver or support. This is especially important if you are an e-commerce store and you need fabulous, reliable and available support for SSL certificates and other e-commerce features.

    Free or paid hosting services?

This is a rather tricky area because it is always advisable to go in for paid web hosting services, but budget considerations play a role too. While there are plenty of free options available, you may get only the basic web hosting features with the same. This means support for an extremely small amount of traffic, lower security levels and customer support that may not always be available.

Price should not be your only consideration when it comes to choosing the right host for your needs. For instance, a dedicated or even managed hosting service provider may prove to be a more expensive choice, but in the long run will also prove to be the most efficient as well.

You will certainly pay a higher price for excellent technical and customer support but in the long run you have to ask yourself whether this would be worth it to keep your website up and running constantly.

Finally, it would also be useful for you to check out exactly how user-friendly your web host is. Some of the things like setting up email accounts and even installing support for your blog should be something that you should be able to do without constantly relying on your web host.

WiredTree Celebrates Nine Years Of Managed Hosting Excellence

WiredTree, a leading provider of managed server hosting, will celebrate nine years of rewarding relationships with its hosting clients this June.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) June 23, 2015

WiredTree, a leading provider of managed server hosting, will celebrate nine years of rewarding relationships with its hosting clients this June.

Founded on June 6, 2006, WiredTree aimed to change the game for hosting services by providing the ultimate in managed hosting. The company combines cutting-edge infrastructure and innovative network design with a commitment to constantly refresh its hardware and services to keep pace with changing technology. But at the heart of WiredTree's flourishing is its relationship with its valued and loyal clients.

"When we started, we knew we didn't want to create a hosting company like the ones we'd had to put up with. We wanted to build a company that embodied values of great service and committed support based on deep expertise," says Zac Cogswell, President of WiredTree, "It's our combined ethos of care and expertise that allowed WiredTree to flourish while dozens of our peers have failed to thrive. I'd like to take the opportunity of our ninth birthday to celebrate the relationships we've built with our clients, and look forward to many more years helping them create sustainable online businesses."

All of WiredTree's server hosting plans include the company's renowned management services: ServerShield security hardening, proactive security updates, proactive service monitoring and restoration, and round-the-clock access to phone and helpdesk support with a 15-minute average response time from WiredTree's in-house hosting experts.

WiredTree offers managed hosting for virtual private servers, hybrid servers, and dedicated servers; each based on custom-built enterprise server hardware housed in the company's Chicago data center. Connectivity is provided by the top four Tier 1 bandwidth providers in the world for optimal reliability and performance.

As WiredTree enters its tenth year, it will continue to provide the excellent hosting experience its clients have become accustomed to. This summer, the company will bring free resource level ups to all VPS and Hybrid server plans; SSD-accelerated VPS and Hybrid server plans will see hardware upgrades. Hardware upgrades for dedicated servers are also in the pipeline.

If there is sufficient interest, WiredTree may introduce brand new managed shared hosting plans later in the year. If you're interested in shared hosting from WiredTree, the company would love to hear from you.

    ###

Reddit clone Voat dropped by web host for 'politically incorrect' content

Voat's co-founder Atko: 'We will have to carefully evaluate our long term options of providing a platform of free speech if we are to stay online'. Photograph: Voat

Voat, the main destination for the diaspora of disgruntled Redditors who left Reddit in protest at perceived censorship, has been dropped by its web host for "politically incorrect" content.

The Swiss Reddit clone, which has become the home of Redditors leaving their former haven in the wake of a crackdown on harassment, had its servers turned off without warning on Friday. A backup had been created on a cloud-based hosting platform just hours before so the site to allow it to remain online.

The site's administrator and co-founder, Atko, asked why his site (as well as an unrelated personal blog on the same host) was deleted, and was told it was because of problems with the content.

He says his provider, hosteurope.de, told him that they cancelled his contract because "we have received significant information that the content on your server includes political incorrect parts that are unacceptable for us" and that they had to take action "due to the fact that we cannot keep bond of trust to you as our customer".

Atko added that: "My eyes have been opened by this. I don't know about you, but we are living in a weird world. We will have to carefully evaluate our long term options of providing a platform of free speech if we are to stay online. Your donations are what keeps us afloat."

Voat was thrust into the limelight last week, after a major change in policy at Reddit saw the social news site ban five subreddits for encouraging harassment.

Amongst the banned subreddits were r/fatpeoplehate and r/hamplanethatred, which stood accused of harassing overweight people; r/transfags, which had reportedly "doxxed" trans people; racist subreddit, r/shitniggerssay; and r/neofag, which focused on mocking the community of a particular gaming forum.

According to Reddit, the subforums were banned for harassing behaviour, rather than simply problematic ideas, which is why other subreddits such as "r/coontown" (a moderator of which posted that "the only good nigger is a dead one" on the day of the Charlestown shootings) are still allowed on the site.

But many of the users who switched over to Voat argue that their issue is that Reddit's ideal is not being applied consistently or transparently. They ask why those five subreddits were chosen and not other ones which exhibit similar behaviour, and whether it has to do with the "political leanings" of Reddit's management – principally chief executive Ellen Pao.

Voat's hosting provider, hosteurope, has not returned a request for comment.

How to set up Amazon Web Services for your small business

Cloud computing technology has matured significantly over the years, and now offers a compelling list of advantages over on-site deployments, especially for small businesses and start-ups that may not have the capital to purchase servers and other hardware appliances.

Cost aside, the public cloud delivers well-established capabilities such as scalability and elasticity. Even more importantly, businesses can leverage the public cloud to quickly set up infrastructure in a timeframe that is measurable in minutes as opposed to the weeks or months required to set up physical infrastructure.

We take a closer look at Amazon Web Services (AWS), one of the most popular cloud services today, in order to examine how it can be leveraged to benefit small businesses.

The AWS ecosystem and basic prerequisites

It's worth noting that while setting up a cloud deployment isn't rocket science – at the basic level, anyway – it does require an IT background or a certain level of technical competency in order to configure everything correctly. For establishing a CMS or PHP-based website, for example, someone who's already familiar with setting up the LAMP (Linux Apache MySQL PHP) stack would probably be a good candidate.

For all its widespread appeal, AWS is a proprietary cloud implementation, when all is said and done. So while some concepts could be similar across different cloud offerings, specific expertise working on AWS is typically not transferrable to Microsoft's Azure or Google's Compute Engine, and is unlikely to be easily replicated in an on-premises deployment.

[Related: How to create a robust backup strategy with cloud services]

AWS does offer a number of ways to help businesses quickly get up and running with common deployment scenarios; indeed, there's often more than one way to implement a particular solution. In order to help you make sense of the AWS cloud, though, it makes sense to start from a short list of the most heavily used components.

    aws console

The main Amazon Web Services console.

Some key components for Web hosting

EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) virtual servers make up the backbone of a cloud deployment on AWS. These virtual servers are available in a variety of configurations, each with differing amount of CPUs, memory, storage and network performance, and are billed based on an hourly rate. Note that some older instance types may get retired over time

S3 (Simple Storage Service) is an object storage system that can store up to 5TB in a single object, and are accessible anywhere on the Web through the requisite command line operators, API calls or even desktop apps that are designed to work with it.

EBS (Elastic Block Store) offers traditional file system capabilities and is more expensive. Attached to a server, EBS volumes function like a disk drive, and like a storage drive, persist even after a compute instance have been shut down. (Note that EC2 instances can be configured to delete EBS volumes on shutdown.)

RDS (Relationship Database Service) is a Web service that makes it easy to set up, operate and scale a relational database management system (RDBMS). An appropriate database engine can be selected, including MySQL, Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL or Amazon Aurora.

Route 53 for DNS and domain name registration. Route 53 offers competitive rates that can be cheaper than the prices offered by some domain name registrars. On the other hand, Web hosting firms are also known to offer packaged deals that include the domain name for free, or at a cheaper rate for the first few years.

Finally, if you are looking to dabble around with the AWS cloud, you will be glad to know that AWS offers a free tier consisting of up to a year worth of compute instance time, as well as various freebies for the various products and services listed above.

Starting from a machine image and choosing a region

AWS makes it easy to launch your first compute instance by offering a wide range of prebuilt and optimized Amazon Machine Images (AMIs) that you can load onto a newly created instance. A vibrant AWS Marketplace also exists for third-party created images, and the AWS community also creates and uses shared public AMIs.

Before setting up your cloud infrastructure, you will need to choose a location or "region" from which to base your virtual infrastructure. The idea here is to go with a location that is either closest to the bulk of your users, or nearest to where your developers are physically located. For the latter, this could result in slightly better load times and speeds when uploading data and developing your website. Developers and database administrators will want to know that synchronous database replication is not supported across different regions, though asynchronous replication is. Finally, some services, especially if they're new or beta offerings, may only be available in certain regions.

Of course, depending on how your website is architected, the use of a good Content Delivery Network (CDN) service could in most cases render your deployment region moot. You can use AWS CloudFront CDN, though other options can be used. In addition, AWS offers tools to easily migrate between multiple regions.

Finally, it's worth noting that while the cost of most AWS service is usually the same across the different regions, it's not always the case. See "Monitor your cost" below for further explanation of AWS cost structures.

    ClickHost Web Hosting

  • editor rating: good
  • Comments
  • June 12, 2015
  • Pros

Strong security features. Robust app library. Powerful WordPress-testing features. Gentle upselling. Good customer service.

  • Cons Pricey. Very limited storage in basic plan. No dedicated or Windows servers. Service slow to set up accounts.
  • Bottom Line

ClickHost makes it easy to create a website, but a lengthy setup time, a skimpy introductory tier, and high prices prevent it from being the best.

  • By Jeffrey L. Wilson

If you're looking to give your business a presence online, you need a Web hosting service to act as your site's foundation. ClickHost (starting at $8.50 per month) is one such option that leverages the power of the cloud, mini virtual machines, and an army of solid-state drives to create an environment in which you can quickly and easily create a website. ClickHost is a solid service, but it's also got some issues that keep it from greatness.

ClickHost's PlansClickHost positions itself as the Web host for non-techies, and its presentation conveys the idea quite well. The company eschews the standard shared server, virtual private server (VPS), and dedicated server labels for its packages. Instead it offers three easy-to-understand cloud-based Web hosting plans: Basic, Better, and Best.

The Basic plan (starting at $8.50 per month) grants 10GB of monthly data transfers, a ridiculously skimpy 500MB of storage, just 50 email addresses, and the ability to host a single domain. If you're looking to start a business, you'll want to pass on this plan, which is best suited for personal websites.

Moving up the ladder you'll find the Better plan (starting at $13 per month), which offers 1TB of monthly data transfers, 10GB of storage, a free domain name, and unlimited email and domain hosting. The Best plan (starting at a relatively pricey $45 per month) tops Better by including a free static IP, dedicated SSL, free malware cleanup, and an option for managed WordPress hosting. These two latter plans are best for small- and medium-sized businesses.

Like other Web hosts, ClickHost gives you a discount if you sign up for a multiyear plan; for example, the Best plan drops to $25 per month if you agree to a three-year contract.

ClickHost boasts a respectable 45-day money-back guarantee. That window isn't as lengthy as Dreamhost's 97-day money-back guarantee, but tops many Web hosts' 30-day refund policies.

The Sign-Up Process Signing up for ClickHost is a breeze. After selecting a plan, you either register a free domain name or transfer an existing domain name, and then you set up your email accounts. ClickHost then nudges you into signing up for services that help you transfer your site, set up email, and provide more frequent site backups, but the prompting isn't anywhere near as pushy as with some other Web hosts. Note that if you buy a domain name, it can take up to 48 hours for it to propagate throughout the Web.

And that's not the only potential delay. Unfortunately, it took more than an hour for ClickHost to set up my account and email me the necessary log-in information. Honestly, that felt like an eternity, especially when Web hosts like Arvixe, one of PCMag's overall Editors' Choice for Web hosting services, allowed me to start building my website right away.

ClickHost Web HostingClickHost only offers Linux-based servers, so if you absolutely need a Windows server to run your website, you must look to Arvixe or a similar service. Should you choose to set up shop, the service includes a website-builder that lets you create a simple, but attractive site in a just a few minutes.

This RVSiteBuilder offers far more site-construction options than 1&1's WebsiteBuilder, but it isn't overwhelming. I found it easy to drag-and-drop text, add images, and change the template and color scheme. Unlike 1&1's WebsiteBuilder, RVSiteBuilder lets you add your own code to the prefabricated elements, which opens the door to a more custom look. In fact, 1&1 requires you to subscribe to WebsiteBuilder Plus ($9.99 per month) if you want to add your own code.

ClickHost offers numerous e-commerce apps available, too. Magento, Open Cart, and Zen Cart are just three of the many shopping options that await you in the site's Softalicious library. In fact, the Softaclicious library contains more than 250 apps.

Managed WordPress HostingClickHost also has managed WordPress hosting (starting at $25 per month). The content management system comes preinstalled, so it requires virtually no effort to get started. You can create posts, pages, and galleries as you would with any other self-hosted WordPress site. I was able to put together a good-looking basic site in just a few minutes. There are plenty of WordPress-friendly themes to choose from, too.

Much like WP Engine and Pressable, ClickHost lets you test changes on a clone site before releasing them on your live, WordPress-powered site. It's an incredibly useful tool if you fear borking your site by experimenting a bit.

Still, InMotion Hosting continues to reign as the PCMag Editors' Choice for managed WordPress hosting. The service tops the competition by offering unlimited websites, disk space, and data transfers per month. Many of the managed WordPress hosts we've reviewed have caps in place that limit the plans in some regard.

Note: At one point, I attempted to log into my ClickHost account to view billing information, but my account information was apparently down due to low resources. My site itself was unaffected, however.

Security FeaturesEach ClickHost plan includes free spam filtering and malware scanning, but the latter feature comes with a price if you've signed up for the Basic or Better plans. Although those plans include a malware scanning tool, they lack a malware removal tool, which is equally important. You have to cough up an additional $3.50 per month for Sucuri to kick malware to the curb—unless you have a Best account. In that case, the malware removal tool is part of your plan.

Static IPs and dedicated secure socket layers (SSL) are also available, depending on the plan. They're included with the Best plan's price, and are Better plan add-ons ($3.50 per month for a static IP, $119 per year for a SSL). Unfortunately, static IPs and dedicated SSLs aren't options available to those who invest in Basic plans.

Customer ServiceI contacted ClickHost's 24/7 email and technical support several times during testing—early morning, midday, and at night—to get a sense of its support team's effectiveness. I asked the support team members about the proper method of contacting the company should I have a billing issue, how I'd actually build a website once I signed up for a plan, and other miscellaneous questions. My queries were answered within a few minutes, and I was pleased with the responses. Unfortunately, ClickHost's billing support is only available Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm EDT. If you have site problems on the weekends or evenings, you're out of luck.

A Solid Web HostClickHost provides plenty of tools to help you create an attractive website, including flexible hosting and the ability to add plenty of extra features. Small- and medium-sized business will likely prefer the more robust—and wallet-friendly—packages offered by Arvixe and Dreamhost, the PCMag Editors' Choice winners for Web hosting novice and advanced users, respectively. Still, ClickHost may prove a worthy Web host for those looking to create a personal or hobbyist website, thanks to its no-nonsense approach to hosting and mild-mannered upselling.
