Web hosting tips for small businesses

Choose the right web hosting service

Choosing the right hosting company is a largely a matter of knowing how much work you want to and can do yourself and how much you want to farm out to someone else. Of course, the more technologically capable you are, the more you can keep things in house. However, web hosting is something that requires a third party provider. Depending on just how much work you want on your plate, some companies offer a full spectrum service and will even help you build your website. If you don't want to tinker with WordPress – or don't even know what WordPress is – leave your website construction to professionals. Fundamentally, you'll need to take stock of your own needs and then find a web hosting service that can fulfil them. Generally speaking, it's a better idea to rely on a third party provider rather than a single in-house employee for your website – tempting as it may be – so as to avoid entrusting one person in your company with the sole responsibility for your company s online presence.

Know the difference between kinds of hosting

Generally speaking in this article, we're assuming a lack of technical knowledge on the part of our readers. However, this is one area where it pays to read up a little. Your choice of hosting service will really depend on your needs and as such it's worthwhile knowing what options are available. There are three basic types of web hosting: shared, VPS, and dedicated. Shared hosting means that your site will run on the same server as multiple other sites. This means that you'll likely only pay a few pounds a month, but on the downside, your site might run a little slow. If you're only just starting out, your site is static, and there's barely any programming running on it, shared hosting will probably be fine for your purposes.

Virtual Private Serving hosting lets you determine the configuration of the server. This is probably the most technically demanding option. Your site will still be sharing a server with other sites, but considerably fewer and will consequently run faster. Of course, you can expect to pay more for this faster and more customisable option. Finally, dedicated servers do pretty much what it says on the tin. A dedicated server is dedicated to your website and yours alone. You can do whatever you like with it and it will run as quickly as possible. However, dedicated hosting is easily the most expensive option out there and most small businesses will find that shared hosting will satisfy their needs.

Consider a managed server

If you're really not sure of your needs and want to leave all of tricky details of web hosting in the hands of a third party, a manged server might be just the solution for you. A managed server entails an automated and human team managing and running your server. They'll take care of updates, viruses, backups, and more. Unmanaged servers will generally run just as well, but they do not come with advantages of a managed server. Strictly speaking, managed servers are for small businesses that expect to run a lot of complicated programming on their site, but can't afford to maintain the server-side in-house. Consequently, if you opt for a manged server you should be technically proficient and willing to work with the server management team to optimize the options and configurations you want. Expect your web designer to work closely with the server management team. This kind of arrangement will likely work best if you've already given consideration to the general management o f your website, something we've discussed elsewhere.

The company you choose for hosting your website does have an effect on your SEO. It does not matter, what kind of a site you have. You need a good hosting plan and a reliable hosting partner for primary marketing reasons. You need a hosting plan that can support rapid expansion, high traffic and almost no downtime.

    Advertisement - Continue reading below

Choosing the right hosting company may not buy you a guarantee of a #1 position at Google SRL. However, it can shift the odds in your favour. You can easily avoid the common consequences most current companies face when they start out with unreliable hosting options.

At least two factors of hosting affect the SEO of your website directly. Uptime – downtime and speed directly influence the visibility of your site, profile and blogs. In reality, these parameters are never constant. They vary significantly from month to month. You need a speed-testing tool to keep your eye on the hosting speed. Price plays a significant role in choosing your hosting company, but it should not be your only parameter.

Always start with a monthly hosting plan

Make sure you get a monthly hosting plan. If you pay them for one year or three years in advance, you will find it financially restricting to move your account to another hosting service. A monthly plan makes sure that as soon as the hosting company drops its qualities, you can switch to a new one with better benefits. Monthly plans always cost about 10$ more than a yearly plan. However, you have more flexibility with a monthly plan since your initial investment is quite small.

Also Read:   The world of Gadgets comes to Hyderabad, India this June! Uptime/downtime: how do they affect your site search engine optimisation?

Almost every server has a downtime. This is the time, during which your site remains inaccessible. Spiders and crawlers from Google visit a site several times a day. Each crawl contributes to the general rank of a site as per keywords. If they find a blockage on the path thanks to server downtime, your website will remain crawled for about 4-5 times per day. This will show adverse effects on your Google Rankings.

If your website hosting service offers a 99% uptime per years, it is not sufficient. 1% means 3.65 days. That is over three days of no crawling, no visitors and no sales. Think carefully, will your website be able to manage three terrible days of no business? Always go for hosts that promise a 100% runtime. Even if they experience some snag, your website will experience more business and sales. Most of these fast 100% uptime plans from hosting companies are expensive.

Keep a host analysis tool handy. You can monitor the uptimes and downtimes of your website by using a reliable analytics tool.

How does speed affect your site optimization?

Google has recently expressed its preference for websites with higher speed. Although Yahoo! Moreover, Bing is not very overt about their speed preferences; you should ideally optimise your site for Google search engine. Google controls over 78% of global search traffic. If you can get your website ready for Google, you will automatically see a drastic rise in inbound traffic and conversions.

You can check your site speed for free from Pingdom, Google PageSpeed Insights and GTMetrix. It will take you a couple of minutes at the most. Any of these tools can tell you which components of your website are slowing you down. These devices generate easy analytics reports. You can see what content needs deletion, which links are broken and which script is too heavy for your sever to shoulder. An ideal website should load in less than 1.5 seconds. Your readers and customers are an impatient bunch. If your site takes more than 3 seconds, they will find somewhere else to shop.

Also Read:   HiLo Lens for iPhone and iPad - Cutting all the right angles!

If your speed results turn out to be lesser than average, you should always go for a private server. They are significantly costlier. However, they are fast too. Sometimes, they have only a few sites feeding off their resources. At other times, they will only have your site. The page speed increases manifold, and your website will load almost instantly.

How does location affect hosting and search engine friendliness?

Search engines love to know your business location. If you have a business, always provide the NAP to Google My Business. This complements your backlinks, contents, keywords, etc. for ranking purposes. For example, if you operate out of Canberra, people who search for your business and Canberra (even without your company name) will be able to see you somewhat on top of the Google SRL.

That is because of the search engine, in use, finds your website address, the IP address of your site and determines where you are operating from. The IP address of your site depends upon the location of the server.

Some say you need to use servers based in your optimisation or country, to rank high in Google. We say that is a myth. You can choose an excellent hosting system from overseas and still get amazing ranks from Google if your host does their job correctly. If you want complete control of your hosting and want to stay in touch with the services, it makes sense if you want to choose a host near you.

    Wrapping it up

Your choice of hosting company will ultimately dictate if your site will be popular, successful or if you will go unnoticed like millions of other websites.

Also Read:   Mico headphones read your mind

Good hosting company will give you the following:

  • Good speed
  • 100% uptime
  • ~0% downtime
  • Google bots love these factors. Getting a good host is not the only factor that will determine your site optimisation for leading search engines, ranking and conversion rates. However, it will provide you with the safety net every website needs.

Google Launches AI Studios To Nurture Machine Learning Startups; To Host Event In Bangalore

Tech giant Google is called a tech giant for a reason. After making its presence felt in almost all tech segments, the company is now focused on getting its AI game right and rule the segment in the coming years. It was only recently that the company had unveiled to the world its upcoming AI attraction Gradient Ventures, Google's on-balance sheet AI investment vehicle. And now, Google's Launchpad has announced a new hands-on Studio program that would help AI startups with resources that would help them kickstart their company's journey to success and scale to new heights.

The idea behind having a separate AI studio is quite simple. Google understand that the anatomy of every type of startup is different from another and they cannot be fed with the same resources to achieve success. This especially makes sense when it comes to AI startups, who are heavily dependent on data and often struggle to get enough of it. Often these startups have to go to market in phases, making their way as new data comes into the picture. Also, it has been observed that AI startups all around the world boost of having highly technical teams but not enough product talent.

Launchpad with its AI studio aims to solve all the aforementioned problems for AI Startups and provide them a level field with other startups to progress and achieve momentum success. It plans to achieve this by making them available with specialized data sets, prototyping assistance and simulation tools. Another major attraction of the Launchpad Studio is that the selected AI startups will get unlimited access to Google's top notch talent, including IP experts, product specialists and engineers.

The Launchpad AI Studio will be based in San Francisco, with additional operations in Tel Aviv and New York City. Eventually, Launchpad plans to host events locally for AI founders in Toronto, London, Bangalore and Singapore as well.

According to Roy Geva Glasberg, Google's Global Lead for Accelerator efforts, Google has worked with over 10,000 startups till date and trained over 2,000 mentors on a global scale. Glasberg also added that these mentors will be serving as recruiting pool for mentors that will be given the job of assisting the AI Studio. The concept of startup studio isn't something original that Google has come up with itself. It has been attempted a few times before, but never really gained any real ground until Andy Rubin's Playground Global came along the way. Playground has established a name for itself by offering startups extensive services and access to top talent to dial-in products and go head-to-head with the some of the largest tech companies in the world.

In fact, Google's AI Studio is also not an original idea. Yoshua Bengio's Element AI recently raised a whopping $102 million Series A to give birth to a similar AI Studio program. For the uninitiated, Bengio is one of the most famous AI researchers in the world and is capable of getting the top machine learning talent to the table and compete with two of the most famous AI groups, Google's DeepMind and Facebook's FAIR. Though the Launchpad AI Studio missed out on having Bengio on board, but it does have the likes of Peter Norvig, Dan Ariely, Yossi Matias and Chris DiBone to compensate the loss.

While Playground has a $300 million accompanying venture capital arm and Element's own coffers up its sleeve, Launchpad Studio, unfortunately, doesn't actually have any capital to give out. Though capital would have been a cherry on the cake and completed the package, but there hasn't been one instance yet when a good AI startup has failed to raise funds on its own. So, money might not act as such a crucial factor, especially when one can get access to Google talent.

If you wish to apply for Launchpad AI Studio, the Applications are now open. There are no restrictions on size of the startups and anyone and everyone with AI at its core can apply for the program.

Google's Launchpad Accelerator is a program that empowers founders by supporting their startups through mentorship and equity-free support. The Accelerator leverages all that Google has to offer, to help participating tech startups reach their true potential. The six-month long accelerator programme selects six startups for every class. Till now, a total of 26 startups have been selected from more than 200 applications.

The program is currently operating in Latin America (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Mexico), Asia (India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam), Africa (Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa), and Europe (Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland) but there are plans to expand to other countries as well.

Palos Park to host pet parade, hot dog celebration

Palos Park will conclude its summer concert series Thursday with a pet parade and National Hot Dog day celebration.

While Palos Park's previous two concerts have been marketed to the adults, the next one is meant for the whole family, said Mose Rickey, the recreation and parks director for Palos Park.

The event will be held at the Palos Park's Village Green, which is behind the village's recreation center at 8901 W. 123rd St.

A pet parade will travel through the village green, where residents can participate with any kind of pet. The parade will begin at 5:30 p.m.

"The kids just love to see their animals and be with their pets," Rickey said.

There also will be prize baskets given to animals and their owners for the following categories: best dressed, owner and pet look-a-like, most unusual, largest and smallest, according to the Palos Park website.

Officials hope to attract about 400 people to the National Hot Dog Day concert and pet parade. Admission is free. While prices for hot dogs haven't yet been determined, Rickey said they will be "cheap."

"It's a picnic atmosphere. It's really reasonable rates, and we've sold over 800 hot dogs before. A lot of people come down and it's a really good time," Rickey said.

The village's staff will prepare hot dogs.

"Our local grill master, Village Manager Richard Boehm, prepared most of the hot dogs in the past. He's the only man I know who's capable of cooking over 1,000 hot dogs," Rickey said.

"What kid doesn't like a hot dog?" Rickey asked. "What kid doesn't like chips? And what kid doesn't like to be with their pet out in the sun?"

The previous concerts this season included a folk music band at the village green and a concert at Swallow Cliff, which featured island music, according to Rickey.

Musicians Mitch Mayer and David Gaidas will provide entertainment.

"They play a plethora of music and provide a wide variety of entertainment," Rickey said.

Check-in for the pet parade will start at 5:00 p.m. The concert will wrap up at 7:30 p.m.

How to Host Static Website or Content on AWS S3 Storage

Learn about Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service), creating a bucket in AWS S3 and then hosting static website or static contents in the storage area.

Table of Contents What is AWS S3 Static Website Hosting with AWS S3 What is AWS S3

The Amazon S3 is a easy-to-use object store and one of the oldest services on AWS platform. Amazon S3 is an acronym for Amazon Simple Storage Service. It's a typical web service that enables us to store and retrieve data via an API reachable over HTTPS. The service offers unlimited storage space and stores your data in a highly available and durable and secured way.

In S3 we can store any kind of data, such as images, documents, and binaries, as long as the size of a single object doesn't exceed 5 TB.

    Key terminologies of AWS S3
  • Bucket – A bucket is a container for objects stored in Amazon S3. Every S3 object is contained in a bucket. Buckets form the top-level namespace for Amazon S3, and bucket names are global. This essentially means that Bucket names should be unique across all AWS accounts.
  • Objects – Objects are the entities or files stored in S3 buckets. An object can be any kind of data in any format. Objects can range in size from 0 bytes up to 5TB, and a singlebucket can store an unlimited number of objects. This means that a single bucket can store virtually unlimited amount of data.
  • Keys – Every object stored in an S3 bucket is identified by a unique identifier called a key.
  • Object URL – As S3 is a cloud system, each object is accessible over internet with a unique URL. Generally the URL structure is like this: https://<region>.s3.amazonaws.com/<bucket>
  • S3 Storage Classes

Amazon S3 has below storage class which customers can choose –

  • Standard is designed for general-purpose data needing high performance and low latency.
  • Standard-IA is for less frequently accessed data.
  • RRS offers lower redundancy at lower cost for easily reproduced data.
  • Static Website Hosting with AWS S3 Create AWS account

Before starting this exercise we need to register ourselves with the AWS free tier account. AWS provides this type of access for 1 year to do the practice on different services. It is very straight forward and to do that you need to follow this link https://aws.amazon.com/ and need to click on "Create an AWS Account" button in top right corner of the home page itself.

Give required registration details. It will ask for some credit card, feel free to provide your own, AWS will not bill unless you have tried the services that does not falls under free tier.

AWS Free TierAWS Free Tier Open AWS Console

Once you have registered and received the credentials, you need to login to the AWS console and after login the console will look like

AWS Console After LoginAWS Console After Login Open S3 Console

Go to S3 console by clicking on the respective link from the storage section. The S3 console will look like below. Please note that AWS frequently update their portal, so the actual view may be little bit different from given image. But the overall functionalities should be same.

AWS S3 Console HomeAWS S3 Console Home Create a bucket on AWS S3

Now click on the create a bucket in the S3 console, and enter a bucket name. Please note that the bucket name is unique in the overall AWS platform, so you might face some error message like bucket already exists if you enter a duplicate bucket name that is already created in AWS by someone before. So, choose bucket name efficiently to avoid this. You can follow official AWS S3 bucket policy for more details.

    Creating S3 BucketCreating S3 Bucket

Once you are able to create the bucket, it will come in the middle of the screen like below.

    S3 Bucket CreatedS3 Bucket Created

Now click on the bucket name and you will go to the bucket details page.

S3 Bucket Details ScreenS3 Bucket Details Screen Upload Static Files to S3 Bucket

For demo purpose, we will create a sample HTML file and will upload in S3 and will access it from internet. This is the upload screen once we click on the Upload button.

Upload File of AWS S3Upload File of AWS S3

I have created one html file index.html and uploaded in the S3. This only contains some static text. The content of the page is very simple as below. Feel free to use any static content such as CSS files, images or browser scripts.

    <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <meta charset="ISO-8859-1"> <title>Insert title here</title> </head> <body> <h2>Hi, Welcome to AWS S3 world!!!</h2> </body> </html>

After uploading the screen will look like this.

File Uploaded on S3File Uploaded on S3 Test the Uploaded File

Now we will try to access the HTML file from internet. To do that first we need to know the address of this page. We need to go to the details of the object by clicking on the link of the object. The details screen will look like below.

Uploaded File Details with URLUploaded File Details with URL

Now click on the link in a separate tab and you can expect one 403 forbidden error. As in AWS everything is private and secure by default. Now we need to set permission to enable the public access of this file to the outside world.

Access Denied ErrorAccess Denied Error Enable Public Access to Objects

Now in order to make this file accessible to the outside world, we need to make this file public.

It is also very simple, just click on Make public button in the top to make this file public, so that everyone can access this from outside world. Once we have make this link public, let's again try to access this from a separate tab to see if it is accessible.

AWS S3 File Accessed From InternetAWS S3 File Accessed From Internet

Congratulations !!! You have successfully set up our first static website in S3 by just clicking on couple of buttons.

Please feel free to give your comment if you face any difficulty here, we will be happy to look into the problem.

    Happy Learning !!

Building Website with Dropbox Hosting, Custom Domain

I want to maintain a personal website using a www.example.co.uk domain which I have current registered at 123-Reg.co.uk. Currently my site is hosted on my Dropbox and I have purchased a subscription for having third and second-level domains on Kissr. I want users visiting www.example.co.uk to be sent to the site hosted on Dropbox but with the destination URL (currently, http://example.kissr.com) being masked, so it just displays www.example.co.uk. Apparently I can used a 302 redirect which frames and masks the destination URL, but it is not a permanent solution and Google will not index it properly. What is the right way to go about achieving what I want?posted by ashaw to Technology (4 answers total) 1 user marked this as a favorite

Web Hosting Company – HUB8 – introduces Free Internet Services to Nigeria

Global Web Hosting Company, HUB8, has recently rolled out hosting services targeted at customers in the Nigerian technology hemisphere – HUB8 Nigeria. The launching indicates an increase in demand for internet technology tools in the country for communications, information, and business transactions. With more Nigerians embracing the use of the internet for financially-related transactions, which in turn is generating a preference for online purchase platforms compared to traditional platforms, the use of the internet for multiple business objectives and as an alternative to traditional business models could be on the verge of an unprecedented rise.

Web hosting in Nigeria has witnessed progressive growth since its inception more than a decade ago, amidst the request for quality, affordable and reliable hosting. As more individuals turn to the web for different reasons, and confidence is increasing with respect to carrying purchases and conducting payments online, the registration for new domains and hosting requirements could be set to rise even further. The Nigeria Internet Registration Association states that the requests for new domains would continually rise, with 4,122 domain name registrations carried out in the month of May only.

The Internet Registration Association has also called for assistance from journalists and media channels to create awareness of the availability of the .ng string. Dean of the NiRA academy, Sikiri Shehu, states that the adoption of the .ng domains has the potential to cause a ripple effect in the economy, through the creation of jobs, the investment of capital back into the economy, and other income generating ventures. He acknowledges that the preference for foreign domains would reduce the amount of income coming into the economy, as Nigerians spend money to purchase these domains. Currently as it stands, he says, the number of .co.uk domain names is getting to the 11 million mark, the .cn 22 million, while the number of the .ng domain names is at a paltry 100,000.

The arrival of HUB8, web host and domain registrar resident in several countries, with a domestic team to respond timely to the demand for services, could be poised to accelerate the growth of domain registration and hosting in the country.

To the end of purchasing domain names, the company has also affirmed her commitment to having the .com.ng and .ng domain names included in her portfolio.

The company's business model is based on the premise that with a domain name, and a few minutes to spare, subscribers can have a website designed and ready to go live in as little as 10 minutes. – all for free. Observing the need for more storage and bandwidth, subscribers can opt for the paid packages.

A quick breakdown of product offerings:

    –   Domain Name Registration – Required to establish a unique identity on the web. The registration of a domain name involves deciding upon a name that would suit the impression to be created or the service to be offered via the web, and then a payment made for the registration of the name. Promo packages presently available dictate that a domain name can be purchased for a minimal fee of N350

With the domain name in hand, subscribers can take advantage of the company's free website builder and hosting packages.

    –    Website Builder: Constructed for individuals with no coding skills – however with an eye for design, the website builder offers the opportunity to have a website designed, up and running in as little as 25 minutes. The availability of different themes and the possibility of modifying the final outcome offers the opportunity to create unique, eye-pleasing designs.

    –     WordPress Websites: Similar to the Website Builder, the WordPress website package offers the avenue to have a WordPress website designed and published for free. The storage and bandwidth for this package is 500 Mb and 100 GB. The paid packages offer larger bandwidth, storage capacity and additional websites hosted, at the same costs.

    –   The final package is the Free cPanel Website Hosting. This is the most attractive option for web developers. Subscribers can start, without any payment commitments, with a 500mb storage and bandwidth of 100 GB. The paid plans offer as much as 10 GB storage capacity, installed on SSD disks, with unlimited bandwidth.

With the ecommerce terrain gaining momentum and influencing customer purchasing, the free website hosting remains the optimal option, to begin with the idea, the objective, in the long run, to host sites similar to Amazon, Ebay etc.

With the availability of the standard cPanel control panel, owners of existing domains on other hosting platforms can easily move their files, to take advantage of the free website hosting.

Regardless of hosting plan selected, the availability of the free options offers the opportunity for anyone to publish the desired information on the web.

Discounting the possibilities of the hidden fees and adverts on websites on the free plans, the company states that there would be no hidden fees or adverts, enabling subscribers of these plans to focus on profitability and growth, until there is the requirement for the paid packages.

Web developers, business owners and bloggers looking for more information and additional resources can visit the HUB8 blog.

Report: Adversary hacks dark web hosting provider, accesses its customers' data

A hacker reportedly registered a shared hosting account on the dark web hosting service Deep Hosting, then uploaded a pair of shells, one of which granted him limited rights to execute commands.

At least 91 dark web sites suffered a breach after a malicious actor accessed their hosting provider's server and apparently managed to export files and possibly linked databases as well, BleepingComputer reported on Monday.

According to the report, on July 8, a hacker with the alias "Dhostpwned" registered a shared hosting account on the dark web hosting service Deep Hosting, before uploading a pair of shells onto the company's servers, one of which successfully granted the attacker limited rights to execute commands.

In a company wiki page quoted in the report, Deep Hosting said it detected the intrusion on July 9 and took steps to secure its clients. BleepingComputer also privately spoke with the Dhostpwned, who said "I've got the majority of files hosted from the site, all of their sql dbs." The hacker also admitted to accessing the server hosting the illegal marketplace M.N.G Market and then accidentally wiping its hard drive's master boot record, causing the site to go down. The hacker does not intend to dump any data gleaned from the breach, the report states.

    InMotion Web Hosting

If you're in search of a web host for either personal or professional websites, check out InMotion Hosting. This web hosting service boasts shared, dedicated, virtual private server (VPS), and WordPress hosting, as well as numerous free ecommerce tools. InMotion's lack of Windows servers, and a few other omissions, prevent it from reaching the heights of DreamHost, HostGator, and Hostwinds, the overall PCMag Editors' Choices for web hosting services.

    Shared Web Hosting

InMotion offers three Linux-based shared web hosting plans. The most basic, Launch ($7.99 per month with an annual subscription), supports two websites and up to six domains. Power ($9.99 per month with an annual subscription) nets you six websites and up to 26 domains, while Pro ($15.99 per month with an annual subscription) offers unlimited websites and unlimited domains. All InMotion shared hosting plans include unlimited email, storage, and monthly data transfers, which is a nice touch.

That said, HostGator gets the nod as PCMag Editors' Choice award winner for shared web hosting services. InMotion's rival also offers unlimited domains, email, storage, and monthly data transfers, and it adds the choice of Linux- or Windows-based servers. The Windows option is an important one if your site has software that runs on an ASP.NET framework.

    VPS Web Hosting

InMotion offers solid VPS hosting that starts at $44.99 per month and tops out at $154 per month. You get respectable top-level specs, including 8GB of RAM, 6TB of monthly data transfers, and 260GB of storage. Unlimited email, domains, websites, and MySQL databases are included, too. InMotion has a good VPS offering, but it isn't as robust as the PCMag VPS hosting Editors' Choice, Hostwinds.

Hostwinds has stacked and flexible VPS offerings that start at $7.50 per month for 1GB of RAM, 25GB of disk space, unlimited monthly data transfers, and unlimited email. Its offerings scale up to $129 per month for 18.5GB of RAM, 130GB of disk space, unlimited monthly data transfers, and unlimited email.

    Dedicated Web Hosting

You can configure the company's Linux-based dedicated web servers (starting at $189 per month) with 3TB of storage, 15TB of monthly data transfers (which tops SiteGround's 5TB), and an impressive 64GB of RAM (many of web hosts we've tested offer 16GB).

Inmotion has solid dedicated web hosting plans, but Hostwinds, the PCMag Editors' Choice for dedicated hosting, has better all-around packages. Hostwinds offers dedicated hosting packages (starting at $99) that can be outfitted with up to 3TB of storage, 128GB of RAM. They boast unlimited monthly data transfers, too. You even get a choice of Linux- or Windows-based servers.

    WordPress Web Hosting

If you're looking for WordPress hosting, InMotion offers solid packages. The plans aren't true managed WordPress hosting, though they offer many of its elements. The web host's Linux-based, WordPress-optimized servers (starting at $6.99 per month) come with the content management system preinstalled, and offer free daily backups and automatic software updates. However, InMotion will not automatically update your third-party WordPress plug-ins, or provide WordPress-specific security or page caching.

On the plus side, InMotion's WordPress hosting tosses most of the usual limitations to the wind. It offers unlimited websites, disk space, and monthly data transfers. Many of the true managed WordPress hosts we've reviewed have caps in place that limit their plans in some regard. InMotion also offers the BoldGrid website builder for your convenience.

That said, 1&1 reigns as the WordPress hosting champ. The Editors' Choice award-winning service (starting at $6.99 per month) boasts Linux servers, Windows servers, and unlimited storage and monthly data transfers, as well as managed WordPress-specific features like automatic security updates and live staging (the ability to create and test your site on a free temporary domain that can not be accessed via search engines). It's also far easier to set up than GoDaddy's competing product.

    Setting Up a Website

I chose the Launch plan for my testing, but was disappointed to learn that I had to sign up for a full year. Like most web hosts, a discount is applied to the first term (for up to three years). InMotion discloses its renewal rates, so you don't get any surprises. There are no month-to-month options, unfortunately.

I was a bit worried when the confirmation page said that an account specialist would contact me by phone to complete the setup process; I couldn't log until that happened. However, the call was prompt and quite helpful, and I wasn't pushed into making any additional purchases. The representative asked a few questions about the type of website I wanted to build, and then emailed me the appropriate welcome materials.

    Lots of Log-Ins

You manage the general account settings from the Account Management Panel (AMP), but managing the website requires a separate cPanel login. I had some trouble finding and installing the basic site builder, which is, oddly enough, called the Premium Website Builder. Eventually, I contacted web chat support, but the person I chatted with referred me to email support. Thankfully, I got a quick response, and after I supplied my AMP password, the support team was able to set me up.

The website builder requires yet another login and password, but building a website is an otherwise straightforward affair. You have three site types to choose from (site, blog, or photo gallery), you can select themes and colors, and you can pick the types of pages you'd like to include on your site. In addition to standard pages such as Contact Us and About Us, you can add special pages, such as Flash Intro and eShop. Next, you can add a map, poll, RSS reader, or script module into your pages. Unfortunately, the Premium Website Builder doesn't produce particularly attractive pages; my site looked dated. Alternatively, you can use WordPress to create your site.

    E-Commerce

The service has many e-commerce options. You can add an eShop page using the Premium Web Builder and build a simple store. Payment options are limited, though. You can also download OpenCart or PrestaShop (both free) for a more robust store. I gave OpenCart a try; it offers a comprehensive dashboard for tracking customers and sales and multiple shipping and payment options. This beats other hosts like iPower and JustHost, which charge an extra monthly fee for e-commerce. Unfortunately, e-commerce isn't available with the basic Launch plan.

    Security

InMotion offers several security features, including free remote backup services for accounts under 10GB in size. For WordPress sites, a free Sucuri Security plugin can be used to scan for malware and other security risks. McAfee spam and virus protection (starting at $1.39 per month) is also available for email accounts. You can purchase SSL certificates ($99.99 per year, with a $25 installation fee), which include a dedicated IP address.

    Rock-Solid Uptime

Uptime is an incredibly important aspect of the hosting experience. If your website is down, clients or customers will be unable to find you or access your products or services. That is a nightmare scenario. Thankfully, InMotion showed dependable uptime in my testing.

I use a website monitoring tool to track my test sites' uptime over a 14-day period. Every 15 minutes, the tool pings my website and sends me an email if it is unable to contact the site for at least one minute. The data revealed that my InMotion site went down briefly during the testing period. Overall, InMotion is stable and dependable, but it's worth noting that some services, including A2 web hosting, didn't go down at all during testing.

    Customer Service

I fired up InMotion's web chat to learn how managed servers differ from non-managed servers. Before I exchanged words with a 24/7 customer service representative, the web chat prompted me to key in my question. It returned help links, but none were relevant. I started the human-based web chat, and was connected to a representative a few seconds later and got the information I needed.

I later called InMotion's customer support squad to learn the differences between shared and hosting. Someone quickly fielded my call and gently explained the differences in everyday language. I am very pleased with InMotion's customer service.

    Money-Back Guarantee

InMotion has a very generous 90-day money-back guarantee that bests most other web hosts' refund policies. Dreamhost's 97-day money-back guarantee bests InMotion's offers by a week, however.

    A Worthy Web Host

InMotion's lack of a complete managed WordPress hosting solution, as well as Windows servers, prevents it from entering our upper-echelon of top-rated web hosting services. Still, it's a solid pick thanks to good uptime, numerous free add-ons, free e-commerce features, unlimited email at all levels, and a lengthy 90-day money back guarantee. Check out the Editors' Choice winners, Dreamhost HostGator, and Hostwinds, our very best overall web hosting services.

Westworld Website Teases Host Takeover In Season 2

The first season of Westworld ended with one heck of a finale. Alongside the death of Anthony Hopkins' character, the Hosts rose up against the workers and guests of the park – led by Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood). For season 2, then, fans expect to see a massive conflict break out between the Hosts and their human oppressors. And though the series isn't returning until next year, a tie-in website has now offered up a hint at what we can expect.

DiscoverWestworld.com, which is presented as if it's the real website for the park, has been replaced with a chilling GIF. As you can see below, it seems to show a park employee trying to contact the outside world…before the system takes back control and replaces the message.

New on the website! from westworld

From this fun tease we can have a guess at what the new status quo for Westworld season 2 will be. By the way the distress call message was removed, it looks like the Hosts will have complete control of the park. Furthermore, communications with the outside world have been shut down, with the Hosts making sure that things appear as if nothing's out of the ordinary.

If we're correct in our assumption, this sounds like a brilliant revamp of the show. For one, it will bring it much closer to the plot of the original 1973 movie from Jurassic Park writer Michael Crichton, which saw the robot inhabitants of the park run amok. Assuming that Dolores remains the leader of the Host insurrection, it'll also be fascinating to see her in such a different role.

Tell us, what are you hoping to see in Westworld season 2? Let us know in the comments section!

Business Choice Awards 2017: Web Hosting

    Business Choice: Web Hosting

Businesses large and small, local, and global, understand the value of having a web presence. A website makes it easier for customers to find you and establishes a basic level of credibility. It also gives you an opportunity to tout the products, services, practices, and attitudes that distinguish your business from the competition. This is your own corner of the web.

However, you can only sing your praises if your website is up and running and performs reliably. For this reason, PCMag asks its readers to evaluate their own web hosting service for our Business Choice survey so you're armed with the inside scoop shared by your peers.

For more than 25 years, we have been augmenting our hands-on, labs-based product reviews with our Readers' Choice Awards, in which PCMag readers rate the products and services they use the most. The Business Choice Awards extend the reader-contributed ratings to the hardware, software, and services our readers deploy, administer, maintain, and use in a business environment.

You can be part of Business Choice! Sign up for the Readers' Choice Survey mailing list to receive invitations in the future.

Looking for an expert opinion? Read our roundup of the Best Web Hosting Services.

Web hosting covers a wide range of services, so it's best to look before you leap. Our expert reviews and ratings from your peers should give you a strong foundation to make the best choice for your business.

This year, there were 207 companies (down slightly from last year's 212) nominated for Business Choice Awards for Best Web Hosting Service. Eight received enough votes to be considered for top honors. Squarespace is the only new finalist—the others are repeat visitors, and have been for the past three years.

Our winner, for the fourth year in a row, is DreamHost with an overall satisfaction score of 8.8 (on a scale of 0 to 10, with 10 as the best). That score is down a little from last year's 9.0. Once again, DreamHost's biggest fault seems to be that it has the highest percentage of respondents requiring tech support at 58 percent (way up from last year's 41 percent).

Business Choice 2017: Web Hosts - Overall Scores

While it's concerning that DreamHost has such a high number of people who need tech support—almost one-third of users—they rate the quality of that tech support highly at 8.9 (maybe people just like to call in and chat with the dreamy DreamHost tech helpers). Bluehost had almost as many users who needed help at 54 percent, but those users only rate Bluehost support at 7.1.

DreamHost's scores are all down from last year, and those were down from all-time highs in 2015. But the numbers are still good enough to make it the top scoring (or tied) vendor in every rating category (other than tech support needed). It ties with HostGator for reliability (an excellent 9.1) and with 1&1 for the Net Promoter Score (54 percent). 1&1 and HostGator are the only web hosts in the survey that give DreamHost any competition among PCMag reader ratings, but neither can quite beat it. Yet.

Once again, Network Solutions comes in dead last with a 6.7 in overall satisfaction. Network Solutions has the lowest score in every category capped off by the only negative Net Promoter Score (-8 percent) among our finalists. That means survey respondents actively steer their colleagues away. This is the fourth year in a row Network Solutions has held this dubious distinction.

Squarespace, a new finalist this year, racked up solid middle-of-the-road scores across the board while relative newcomer Wix, in its second year as a finalist, enjoys having the lowest percentage of respondents requiring technical support (10 percent). It's also interesting to note that since Yahoo! Small Business was spun off and rebranded as Aabaco Small Business, it has virtually disappeared from our list, receiving only a single (poor) rating. That's how it goes for what used to be Viaweb and GeoCities.

    WINNERS: BUSINESS WEB HOSTS

Business Choice sealDreamHost The readers of PCMag have their choice of literally hundreds of web hosting services, but the one they tell us time and again is the most dreamy is DreamHost. The service scores through the roof on most categories, and even when it has a negative (like lots of tech support needed), customers appreciate the quality of that support so much it's still a winner. There is little doubt that if word of mouth drives your business decisions, the one you should hear about is DreamHost.

    Methodology

We email survey invitations to PCMag.com community members, specifically subscribers to our Readers' Choice Survey mailing list. The surveys are hosted by SurveyMonkey, which also performs our data collection. This survey was in the field from June 5, 2016 to June 26, 2016.

Respondents are asked to rate their web hosting service. They are asked multiple questions about their overall satisfaction with the solution, as well as experiences with technical support within the past 12 months.

Because the goal of the survey is to understand how the web hosting services compare to one another and not how one respondent's experience compares to another's, we use the average of the web hosting services' rating, not the average of every respondent's rating. In all cases, the overall ratings are not based on averages of other scores in the table; they are based on answers to the question, "Overall, how satisfied are you with your web hosting service provider?"

Scores not represented as a percentage are on a scale of 0 to 10 where 10 is the best.

Net Promoter Scores are based on the concept introduced by Fred Reichheld in his 2006 best seller, The Ultimate Question, that no other question can better define the loyalty of a company's customers than "how likely is it that you would recommend this company to a friend or colleague?" This measure of brand loyalty is calculated by taking the percent of respondents who answered 9 or 10 (promoters) and subtracting the percent who answered 0 through 6 (detractors).
