Pospisil: Let higher seeds host throughout playoffs

As No. 1 seeds, Kearney, Gretna, Norfolk Catholic, Ponca, Creighton, West Holt, Mullen and Riverside did their jobs.

They won their first-round playoff games at home.

But only Kearney won't have to hit the road for its next game.

For the others, that's not right, and those classes need to adopt the legislation — or simply have the NSAA board do it — that Class A passed a couple of years ago that did away with the socialistic nature of home-game assignments in the playoffs.

In Class A, it's simple. Through the semifinals, the higher-seeded team hosts. They've earned it through their season performance.

But in the other classes, it's far more complicated. Paraphrasing from the NSAA's football manual regarding second-round, quarterfinal and semifinal games:

» If the two teams both hosted their previous game, the higher seed will host. Same if both visitors in their previous game.

» But ... if one team was a visitor and one team was a host in their previous game, the team which was a visitor will host.

This practice dates to 1981 and was adopted through the legislative process.

As pointed out repeatedly here, the No. 1 seeds have the greatest odds of not hosting games because they are grouped with the 8-9 seeds for the second round and the 4-5 seeds for the quarterfinals. The lower seeds in those two matchups have the greatest probability of winning.

So this week, because 9 beat 8, Gretna goes to Grand Island Northwest, Norfolk Catholic to David City Aquinas, Ponca to Battle Creek, Creighton to Plainview, West Holt to Perkins County, Mullen to Giltner and Riverside to Hay Springs. If there's a consolation, the higher seeds know they'll be at home for the next round.

While on the subject of fields, bravo to Nebraska Lutheran taking its Eight Man-1 game Wednesday against East Butler from its field at Waco to the turf at Shelby-Rising City.

More schools with bare-bone facilities should consider similar moves. Outside the metro areas, there are turf fields at North Platte, Kearney, Grand Island, Hastings, Central City, Aurora, York, Seward, Albion, Columbus, Shelby, Norfolk, Humphrey, Wayne, Fremont, Beatrice, Norris, Johnson-Brock, Nebraska City and Falls City (did I miss any?). The Panhandle is expected to get one next year at Chadron State.

District basketball games aren't played in small gyms. Nor should playoff football games be played with two sets of bleachers on each side of the field.

Ratings comments

Top 10: Gretna and Class B No. 2 Elkhorn South move up to eighth and ninth after Lincoln High's 21-19 loss to Millard South. The latter returns at No. 10 after ending a two-game losing streak.

Class A: Millard South is eighth here, followed by Lincoln High and Lincoln Pius X. Although it lost to the next in line, Grand Island, Pius X currently still gets much credit for beating then-No. 1 Omaha North to end the regular season.

Class B: Cam Jurgens-less Beatrice lost 35-7 to Elkhorn, its second loss of the season to the Antlers, and exits. Grand Island Northwest moves into seventh, followed by Elkhorn and two opening-game losers, Blair and Columbus.

Class C-1: Upsets by Pierce and Wayne over Fairbury and Chadron, respectively, return those northeast schools to the ratings at No. 7 and No. 9. In the shuffling, West Point-Beemer vaults from 10th to sixth for its win over Pierce — can the Cadets validate that win in Friday's rematch at Pierce? Gothenburg stays ranked, despite a 42-6 home loss to Aquinas, because of its 21-20 win over next-in-line Kearney Catholic.

Class C-2: Yutan's 25-0 win at Oakland-Craig jolted the ratings as the Chieftains jump from eighth to fifth and Oakland slides from third to 10th. Battle Creek shut out defending champion Wilber-Clatonia and Central City held off Hartington Cedar Catholic to garner home quarterfinals.

Eight Man-1: East Butler and Perkins County return after West Point Guardian Angels lost 52-50 to Pender and Heartland lost 24-6 to Johnson-Brock.

Six Man: Hay Springs beat Spalding Academy 26-20 to exchange places with the then-No. 4 Shamrocks.

Should higher-seeded teams host Nebraska prep football playoff games through the semifinals?

Outside of Class A, if two teams both hosted their previous game in the Nebraska high school football playoffs, the higher seed will host. Same if both visitors in their previous game. But if one team was a visitor and one team was a host in their previous game, the team which was a visitor will host. Do you think higher seeds should always host through the semifinals?

Stephen Hawking's Ph.D. thesis crashed its host website—here's what it says in simple terms

Credit: Stephen Hawking/University of Cambridge

The PhD thesis of perhaps the world's most famous living scientist, Professor Stephen Hawking, was recently made publicly available online. It has proved so popular that the demand to read it reportedly crashed its host website when it was initially uploaded.

But given the complexity of the topic – "Properties of Expanding Universes" – and the fact that Hawking's book A Brief History of Time is also known as the most unread book of all time, you might benefit from a summary of its main result.

The thesis covers several topics, including recently discovered gravitational radiation, but the final chapter is the part that many physicists consider the most significant. It deals with the birth of the universe itself, and is simply titled "Singularities".

Creation theories

The major achievement of Hawking's thesis was to effectively show that the Big Bang theory of how the universe began from a single point was physically possible. It wasn't just a mathematical nuisance that sprang out of the equations physicists had developed to describe the possible evolution of the cosmos.

The concept that the universe started a finite time ago in a Big Bang is now an accepted scientific fact, and yet it remains an astounding idea. Imagine: all the matter in your body was once – in one form or another – compressed into the same tiny volume as the most distant galaxy and everything in between. About 14 billion years ago, this point rapidly expanded to create space and time. It continues to expand today.

At the time of Hawking's PhD in the 1960s, scientists were still arguing over the idea. A popular alternative to the Big Bang was the Steady State model. Proponents of the Steady State model were uncomfortable with a universe of finite age that began in this way. In fact, the moniker "Big Bang" was coined as a derisive term by Steady State champion Fred Hoyle. To understand how Hawking showed it really was possible, we need some background physics.

Spacetime and singularities

In the early 20th century, Albert Einstein revolutionised our understanding of gravity through his general theory of relativity. Einstein showed that we could think of gravity as the curvature of spacetime, caused by the presence of mass or energy.

Spacetime is a way of thinking about the framework of the universe that combines three-dimensional space and one-dimensional time. All objects exist and all events happen somewhere in spacetime. But it's hard for most people to imagine because, although we can move freely in three-dimensional space, we cannot travel where we like through time. It's a bit like being an insect trapped on the surface of a pond. It can only move in two dimensions, despite there being another spatial dimension to explore.

General relativity expresses how space and time are linked. In his theory, Einstein elegantly described how the curvature of spacetime is related to the density of mass and energy in his "field equations".

After these equations were published, other scientists used them to explore what happens to spacetime in different physical situations. In the case of objects where all the matter is concentrated into a single point, the field equations predict something unusual: the curvature of spacetime becomes so extreme that even light cannot escape. Today we know these objects actually exist as black holes, and we've since found evidence for them in space.

These situations where the solutions to the equations become infinite are called "singularities". Hawking's final thesis chapter explored this idea of singularities, not for the spacetime around black holes, but for the entire universe.

From black holes to the Big Bang

In cosmology, a central tenet is that space must, on average, be homogeneous and isotropic. In other words, over a large scale, the contents of the universe must be pretty evenly distributed and look the same in every direction.

Expanding universe. Credit: NASA

The simplest solution to Einstein's field equations that satisfies these conditions is called the "Robertson-Walker metric", named after the scientists involved in its development. The metric is simply the term we use for describing the interval between two events in spacetime.

Importantly, the Robertson-Walker solution allows the spatial part of the metric to change with time. That means it can describe a universe in which space itself is expanding. Edwin Hubble found evidence that the universe really is expanding in the 1920s by showing that other galaxies are moving away from us.

The Robertson-Walker metric and field equations allow us to describe this expansion in terms of what cosmologists call the "scale factor", describing how much space has expanded or contracted between a particular point in time and the present day.

If the universe is expanding, it should have been smaller and denser in the past. Run the clock back far enough and the scale factor should go to zero. All the matter and energy in the universe must have been contained in a single point with infinite density: a cosmological singularity. This is the basis of the Big Bang model, a bit like a black hole in reverse.

Scrapping the Steady State

The Steady State model tried to eliminate the cosmological singularity, which many argued wasn't plausible. Singularities were seen as shortcomings of the predictions of general relativity and not in line with the known laws of physics.

In the Steady State model, the universe is eternal and doesn't have a beginning at all. Its apparent expansion can be explained by adding a "creation field" or C-field to Einstein's equations that would mean matter is continuously created in the space between galaxies as they move apart.

But in the final chapter of his PhD thesis, Hawking argued that the idea of a C-field came with its own set of problems and that the right model involved the Robertson-Walker solution describing an initial singularity.

What he did next was what many consider groundbreaking. Building on the work of fellow British physicist Roger Penrose, Hawking mathematically proved that singularities were not a shortcoming of theory but expected features of nature. He effectively demonstrated that general relativity allowed for a universe that began in a singularity.

Half a century later, the observational evidence for the Big Bang creation scenario is overwhelming and the Steady State model has long been abandoned. Hawking has gone on to make further monumental contributions to cosmology and theoretical physics. Reading Hawking's thesis is an insight into an exceptionally creative mind – and the first steps of discovery in what has been a remarkable scientific journey.

Eric Eoin Marques is wanted by American authorities to face charges relating to advertising and distributing child sexual abuse imagesPADDY CUMMINS/PCPHOTO

The justice minister should have established why an Irishman described by the FBI as the "largest facilitator of child pornography" was not being prosecuted in Ireland, the High Court has heard.

Eric Eoin Marques, alleged to be the owner and administrator of a site on the dark web known as Freedom Hosting, is wanted by American authorities to face charges relating to advertising and distributing child sexual abuse images.

The charges relate to images on more than a hundred anonymous websites depicting the rape and torture of children. Mr Marques, who has no criminal record, is alleged to have made more than €1 million from the business.

The suspect, 31, who has dual Irish and US citizenship, has been in custody since his arrest in…

Jumia to host biggest Black Friday event

Business News of Monday, 23 October 2017

Source: ghananewsagency.org

2017-10-23

Jumiaghana2 Last year, the sale run for one week but will run for two weeks this year

Jumia Ghana says users of its e-commerce platform will enjoy the best deals in various categories during this year's Black Friday event, scheduled to be run from 24th November to 8th December, 2017.

Mr Ore Odusanya, Managing Director of Jumia Ghana, said the Black Friday Event was the biggest by default, the biggest sale for most e-commerce businesses and Jumia expected to triple its sales that week.

Last year, the sale run for one week but will run for two weeks this year, in a bid to give consumers more options.

The company had seen high growth in the last six months due to an increased growth on consumers, offering them the best and biggest brands at the best prices, and had been able to maintain its black Friday sale levels after last year's event.

He was speaking at a press interaction with Jumia's Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director in Accra.

"Ghanaians should get ready, not only for the widest range of products, or deals, but at the best prices. Make you save your money and start stocking your mobile money accounts for the best deals on Black Friday" he advised customers, adding that discounts will go up as high as 75 percent this year.

Mr Odusanya said there will be new deals every day, in different categories during the two-week campaign.

On 24th November, the global Black Friday, the sale will be in all categories, after which it will be one category per day; men's fashion on 25th, women's fashion on 26th, Cyber Monday on 27th, mobile phones on 28th, Computers on 29th, TVs and appliances on 30th, and so on till the 8th of December.

He said Jumia Ghana recognised the void of trust in e-commerce in Ghana and had put in place two measures to address this. Customers who buy on Jumia, he explained, have the option of paying cash on delivery where they are able to see the products they are buying and either accept or reject it.

They also have a seven-day return polic y on the products.

Jumia has also worked with partner MTN to set up and integrate its mobile money platform where customers can pay for their products safely and also partnered with Ghana Post for out-of-Accra deliveries.

Mr Massimiliano Spalazzi, Jumia Africa CEO, said Jumia began operations in Ghana to the lack of a strong offline retail presence.

While one retail outlet in the United States served about 380 people, one outlet in Africa served on average 60,000 people, thus e-commerce allows African countries to leapfrog to online purchasing.

"This is a huge opportunity we are seeing across is happening across the countries where we operate," he said, adding that Africa demographic of young people, who are tech savvy, also serve an opportunity for e-commerce.

He said technology was a way to grow faster any business that you can open offline and Jumia, across all its services, allowed entrepreneurs to build faster what they would take more time, ef fort and money to build offline.

"We simply provide the reach to all customers that are available in Africa," he stated.

Mr Spalazzi said the company had seen an increase in the online orders in Ghana in the last five months, which indicated the country will grow extremely fast and become one of the leading countries in the Jumia portfolio.

It Takes More than HTTPS to Make Your Website Secure

You need HTTPS on your website. It encrypts all data sent to and from your web server, which is especially important if visitors are handing over contact details or payment information. But there's more to website security than encryption. Here are some things to keep in mind while you're getting your certificate sorted out.

Encryption Is a Good Thing

The word "encryption" comes to us from Greek, which makes me particularly partial to it. (I'm a recovering classicist.) The Greek word κρυπτος (kryptos) means "hidden." Encryption, as Wikipedia explains, is "the process of encoding a message or information in such a way that only authorized parties can access it."

Windows 10 warning about connecting to an open WiFi network

There's a reason that your operating system warns you about connecting to open Wi-Fi networks. Information you send across that network is not encrypted, so a clever hacker with a sniffer tool can see any passwords or other information you might send over it. As the FTC puts it:

If you use an unsecured network to log in to an unencrypted site — or a site that uses encryption only on the sign-in page — other users on the network can see what you see and what you send. They could hijack your session and log in as you. New hacking tools — available for free online — make this easy, even for users with limited technical know-how. Your personal information, private documents, contacts, family photos, and even your login credentials could be up for grabs.

Note that there are two criteria for danger here: an unsecured network and an unencrypted website. As a website owner, you can't control the security of the network that your visitors use to log in, but you can make sure that any information they send to your website is encrypted.

You do this by installing a security certificate, popularly known as an SSL certificate, on your web server. The actual algorithm these days is no longer SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) but TLS (Transportation Layer Security), but the term "SSL certificate" has stuck.

A Little HTTPS History

A few years ago we all liked to believe that you only needed SSL if you were collecting financial information or other data protected by privacy laws. Your hosting company or ISP might provide SSL for your email as part of the package you were already getting, but merchant service providers required you to pay for a certificate that met their standards, and you had to cough up money for it every year. At the beginning of 2015, one of my clients paid GoDaddy $65 for an SSL certificate good for one year.

By the end of 2015, Google announced it would prioritize HTTPS over HTTP when indexing sites. Early in 2016 we had the launch of Let's Encrypt and the push to make free security certificates available to everyone. Developers the world over celebrated, because we all want the web to be more secure. A paid SSL certificate is a reasonable expense for an ecommerce website where a single product costs more than the certificate does, but not for a personal blog that doesn't even make money from ads.

Before long, hosting companies started to offer easy installation and automated renewal of Let's Encrypt certificates. Several had jumped on the bandwagon by May 2016, and most of the rest have followed, especially since Google and other browser companies promised to start shaming sites without HTTPS. (Indeed, while I was in the process of writing this article, Chrome version 62 dropped, now with extra warnings.)

Get Your Security Certificate Now

I published some guidelines for setting up HTTPS on your website in January, for the East Bay WordPress Meetup. It includes condensed instructions for setting up HTTPS on SiteGround, DreamHost, WP Engine, Pressable, and BlueHost, but there are actually many more hosting companies that support Let's Encrypt. Even GoDaddy has finally announced its new Pro WordPress hosting, which includes free SSL for every site. HostGator provides free SSL with its business plan; if you don't want to upgrade your plan, you can pay $10 to have their support staff install a third-party certificate for you. (I used Cloudflare's, because that's good for 15 years. It only works if your site is connected to Cloudflare, though.)

Unless you're dealing with HostGator, getting HTTPS set up should take about 30 minutes. You need to install the certificate, update your site URL, update your analytics to track the HTTPS version of your site, and make a few other minor tweaks to fix any insecure content. Do it now. Do not pass Go. Do not pay $200.

All set? Read on to find out why HTTPS is not the cure for all website security woes.

The Problem with Google's Word Choice

I'm all in favor of warning people when they're about to send unencrypted data over the Internet. The problem I have is with Google's choice of terminology. Describing a page served over HTTP as "not secure" is accurate. But describing a page served over HTTPS as "secure" rather than "encrypted" is misleading.

Google Chrome Mozilla Firefox Microsoft Edge

At present, Chrome is the only browser that actually shows the word "secure" in the address bar. Firefox shows a green lock and Edge just shows a lock. If you click on any of these locks, you see more information. Chrome and Firefox say "Secure Connection." Edge, interestingly, first provides the identification and then says "Your connection to the server is encrypted," which is what I call truth in advertising. But right now Edge provides no warning at all when a website's login page loads over HTTP instead of HTTPS.

Google Chrome Mozilla Firefox Microsoft Edge

I am by no means the first person to object to Google's word choice for identifying sites with HTTPS. What Wordfence, Tune the Web, and GlobalSign particularly object to is the fact that phishing sites can get SSL certificates, too. That means that you can't count on the green padlock alone to guarantee that the site asking you for your financial details is the site you think it is.

what an extended validation certificate looks like in Google ChromeLook for the company name next to the lock when you're on financial sites.

This is why financial institutions and anyone else whose site is likely to be spoofed should get Extended Validation (EV) certificates that show the name of the company along with the green lock. These are expensive, because every application is reviewed by actual humans to make sure that the company buying the certificate is legitimate. Check to be sure that the PayPal site you are logging into actually says "PayPal, Inc." in the address bar.

What HTTPS Won't Prevent

screenshot of defaced website

If you're reading this, you've probably been affected by a data breach, computer virus, website "hack", or other attack at least once. Website defacement and most other attacks are carried out by bots that probe thousands of sites for security vulnerabilities. These bots don't seek to capture information submitted to your site, but rather to attack your website's files or database. Having a security certificate won't protect you from these attacks.

So How Do You Protect Yourself?

The good and bad news about website security is that most of it is your hosting company's responsibility. According to the owners of companies like Liquid Web and SiteDistrict, if your hosting company is any good, you shouldn't have to worry about most of the things that the latest "Ultimate Guide to WordPress Security" talks about at all. (I've tested this in the case of SiteDistrict.) This is in great part because no amount of security that you apply directly to WordPress will help you if the attackers aren't getting in via WordPress.

A good hosting company will take security measures that deter most attacks before they get anywhere near your WordPress installation. Most managed hosting companies also include security scans and many offer to fix your site for free if it gets hacked. Depending on your hosting company, a security plugin may be redundant. (Talk to them if you aren't sure.)

Your Website Security Responsibilities

If you have a good hosting company, there are only a few things that you need to worry about in addition to HTTPS. (If you have a bad hosting company, now would be a good time to switch.)

Use Strong Passwords

I am constantly horrified at the terrible passwords my clients use. Using a weak password is like putting up a "Hack me now" sign. Brute-force attacks—where bots try thousands of username and password combination in order to break into your site—are still very common. Password management apps are abundant and not expensive, so there's no excuse for using your address or your pet's name as a password, or using the same password everywhere. I've used both LastPass and Dashlane and can recommend them. (Note the EV security certificates.) You need the premium versions if you want to share passwords across devices.

Back Up and Update. Back Up Before You Update.

Between WordPress core and WordPress plugins, sites require continual updating. Rarely a day goes by when there is nothing to update on any of the sites I manage. Many of those updates fix security problems, and once the update has been released, the vulnerability is made public, which means there are exponentially more people who will try to exploit it.

Because updates can sometimes break things, you do want to back your site up before updating, as well as on a regular schedule. I like Updraft Plus because it automatically backs up before any updates.

If you don't want to do this daily maintenance yourself, there are many companies out there that can do it for you. I know good people at WP-Tonic, WP Site Care, and Maintainn. All of them handle updates, backups, security scans, and various other levels of support for a reasonable monthly fee.

Even if your hosting company provides backups, it's important to make your own, just in case. WordPress backup plugins tend to be a bit resource-intensive, but if your host rules them out on performance grounds, there are still services like VaultPress and BlogVault.

Keep Your Computer Virus-Free

Most third-party anti-virus programs are awful. There's nothing that will slow a fast computer down like Norton Antivirus. If you exercise sensible precautions and keep your operating system and software updated, you should be fine with Windows Defender or Apple's XProtect. But you should know that if your computer is infected with a virus, it can transmit that virus to your website by stealing your FTP credentials and adding infected files. It happened to me once.

Use SFTP, FTPES or SSH to Transfer Files

Plain FTP, like plain HTTP, sends your username and password in plain text, which means someone could steal your credentials. Your hosting company should give you access via either SFTP, FTPES (FTP over explicit TLS/SSL), or SSH (Secure Shell). Even if it's your developer who does all the editing and transferring of files, the host has to make the secure connection possible. If your host only allows plain FTP, it's probably time to switch hosting companies.

Back to HTTPS

You need HTTPS. You need it for security, for SEO, and for performance. (The new, faster HTTP/2 protocol requires HTTPS.) If you don't have it set up on your website yet, do it now. Just make sure you understand the difference between "encrypted" and "secure."

Without These 3 Web Hosting Features Your Website Is Dead In The Water

Today everyone has a website, not just businesses. It's even becoming more customary for individuals to create websites, which includes blogs, to showcase their creative works. Companies looking to hire graphic designers, for example, will frequently ask to see their portfolio of work on their website—the assumption is that the person definitely has a site; it's just a matter of what the URL is. When embarking on creating a site, a fundamental ingredient will be choosing a web hosting provider. After all, no matter how creative your content, no matter how clever your copy, no one will ever see it if you don't have a web host.

One of the best analogies of a web host comes from "Web Hosting for Dummies." In it, a website is likened to a physical store, and a web host is likened to what would be the equivalent of the store's location. The analogy makes sense since the host is where a site is "anchored," or "parked."

Moreover, just as the property landlord of a physical store is critical to its operation, the web hosting provider is also critical for the smooth running of the site. There is a multitude of features to choose from when considering a web host; however, some are more important than others.

Without the following three web hosting provider features, you can kiss your website goodbye.

Important Web Hosting Features Article Image

IMAGE: PEXELS Guaranteed Server Uptime

Choosing web hosting from an outside provider, as opposed to hosting a site yourself, means you're leaving it up to the hired provider to ensure that your site is fully functioning at all times and that there will not be any problems that your visitors will have when clicking through any of the web pages. Admittedly, it's nearly impossible for any provider to guarantee that they can provide so-called "uptime" of 100 percent, just as a property landlord could never make a guarantee to a tenant that there would never be an issue during their tenancy period that might result in the landlord's having to close the tenant's business for a brief period of time.

Dedicated Server Hosting Or Shared Hosting

If you're an individual with, say, a basic blog that you want to ensure is always up and running for visitors, then a shared hosting plan will be attractive to you. Since you'll be sharing the server with other users on the server, you benefit from lower overall fees, which encompasses fees for site maintenance and additional operations.

The economical price structure is, indeed, one of the best reasons to choose a shared hosting plan. Businesses, on the other hand, have a bit more at stake than to rely on a shared model.

The con to businesses is that if they were to share a server, another user's, or site's, activities could cause a server issue such as extremely slow page loading speeds that would, in turn, affect every domain connected to the server. That would be a major problem for a business.

Not getting through to a site could potentially do damage to the customer experience and lead to customers taking their patronage elsewhere. For that reason, dedicated server hosting, which web hosting providers offer, holds the edge as the better option for businesses, in particular, larger businesses. Dedicated hosting enables these businesses to be the sole kings of their domains.

Customer Service/Support

Nothing's perfect. That means inevitably websites crash. When they do, site owners scramble to figure out why and contact their web hosting providers to resolve the situation. Can you imagine not being able to reach your provider in case of an emergency? Unfortunately, some have had that experience. It's vital that a web host provides support 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year. Don't settle for anything less, and make sure you can reach them multiple ways; that means having an email support option as well as a telephone support option as a safeguard.

In Summary

Finding a low-cost web hosting provider can be easy. There are countless online ads for them everywhere you turn. In contrast, finding the best web host might take a little more effort, but it'll be more than worth your time. Don't aim for the lowest hanging fruit; go for the provider that can deliver on the features previously discussed so that you can be assured of having a trusted site that visitors would love to revisit.

Morgan County hosting first winter farmers' market

Once the leaves start changing to their autumn colors, many area residents probably don't think about attending a farmers' market.

The Morgan County Farmers' Market Association hopes to change that mindset with a new event. For the first time in the market's 10-year history, the Morgan County Farmers' Market Association will hold a winter farmers' market at the First Presbyterian Church's Keller Hall, 240 E. Washington St. in Martinsville.

The first winter market will take place from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

According to association president Bob Elliott, there were several requests from vendors and customers at the summer market to add a winter event.

This weekend is also Fall Foliage Festival weekend, and Elliott said he hopes a lot of festival-goers will stop by the market.

"While the weather is nice, we will set up outside," Elliott said. "Once it gets inclement, we will move inside."

For the first few events, the plan is to have some late-season fresh produce for sale. The market will also include baked goods, eggs, jams, homemade soaps, lotions and jewelry.

Elliott said there is a potential that fresh produce could be sold throughout the winter market's run, but he cannot guarantee it.

"Since this is the first year, this is kind of a test run for all of the vendors, as well," Elliott said.

If customers have any unused farmers' market bucks, they will not be eligible for the winter's farmers' market, as they expired with the end of the summer event.

The winter market is scheduled to take place every other Saturday through Feb. 17, 2018.

"That gives us 10 Saturdays altogether," Elliott said.

He said, other than a few differences between the summer and winter markets, the two events will largely be very similar in nature.

Supporting local farmers and craftsmen also has several benefits, other than the fresh produce.

Between 60 and 65 percent of the money spent during an event such as a local farmers' market stays within the area.

According to the website for the Farmers Market Coalition, farmersmarketcoalition.org, locally owned retailers such as farmers' markets return around three times as much of their sales to a local economy.

Elliott believes the market will be a good gathering place for the community this winter.

"Come visit," he said. "We are planning on still being a gathering place to come see your friends and enjoy."

Web Hosting FAQ

It can be difficult starting a new website. There are many platforms that allow you to host a website and it's sometimes confusing understanding all of their hosting terms. Here's a simple guide to help you understand each step of the web hosting process:

What exactly is web hosting?

Before a website is published online, it will need to be registered and hosted on a web server. A web server is a simple computer program that dispenses web page files to your browser as they are requested. A server machine will generally have software running on it that allows it to act efficiently as a web server. The purpose of a web server is to store, process and transmit web pages to users browsing the internet.

Selecting a hosting service can be tricky for beginners. There are a few different ways to go about this. You can look into a free web hosting service, but free services generally result in pop-ups or advertisements on your site. If you're looking for total control and transparency then the best option is to pay a reputable hosting company to host to your website.

What is a domain name?

A domain name is an instant way to direct people to your online website. As an owner of the site, you'll be able to select the name of your website. People will recognize your site by the domain name so make sure and choose one that's easy to remember and easy to spell.

What are domain extensions (TLDs)?

A domain extension allows you to classify your domain name by adding a relevant extension such as a ".com" or ".org". Each TLD generally has a purpose. For example, ".com" is typically for commercial use and ".org" is generally used for charities. This line is getting more and more narrow as less domain names become available.

What is bandwidth in web hosting?

Bandwidth measures the level of traffic and data allowed to travel and transfer between your site, users, and the int ernet. Each web hosting company will offer a specific amount of bandwidth. This is an important criteria when selecting a web hosting company. In most cases, the more bandwidth a web hosting company can provide, the faster and better their networks, connections and systems will be.

How much disk space is necessary?

The amount of disk space will depend on the type of website you have. For example, a website with mainly audio and video files will consume more space than a simple blog. E-commerce sites that list several product pages will also take up more space than an informational site. If you're planning to have a site with a few readers then your site will be fine running on low disk space. Otherwise, it's highly recommended you ensure that your website has ample disk space.

How does paid web hosting work?

There are only three ways to pay when hosting your website. Shared web hosting is known for being the cheapest solution. This is because your web site is sharing a single server with several other websites. In most cases, this is more than sufficient, but a dedicated server will also work for sites that garner a high level of traffic. This would mean that your website is the only website on a server. However, the server that you'll use will still owned by someone else. Last but not least, you can get a co-located server, this means you actually own it but you'll still have to pay to have someone else house it.

How much does web hosting cost?

The typical cost for web hosting varies from company to company and it also depends on the type of hosting you require. Shared hosting is generally the cheapest, since many sites are all one on one server, companies prefer to cut expenses and go this method. Many shared hosting companies can charge up to $10 a month. This will often include a fair amount of monthly space, a free domain name and other features such as email addresses and social media plugins. If you're intere sted in a dedicated hosting plan, then those providers generally cost over $75 a month. A dedicated server is ideal for customers interested in leasing an entire server for a single purpose, such as a large blog that gets substantial traffic.

What is the best hosting company?

There are several good companies out there on the market that are popular among users depending on their needs. To make it an easier decision, we've outlined some of the top providers, but it's ultimately up to you to select the best plan and the best provider to meet your website needs. Two important factors to value are available space and monthly bandwidth.

Are you planning on having a website that supports credit card transactions and website logins?

If so, an SSL (secure sockets layer) certificate is mandatory for e-commerce websites because it is the standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a web server and a browser. An SSL will ensure that al l data is passed between the web server and browsers will remain private. Need help picking a credit card processor, check out our recent SMB selections for top credit card providers.

Are you looking for a Website Builder?

There are many builder plans available on the internet and the prices vary between each platform. Website builders such as Wix, 3dcart and Weebly are known for providing fantastic templates. These are effective platforms for managing your content in a seamless way. They allow you to customize and design your website through a simple drag and drop procedure.

Which operating system is your server compatible with? Is it Windows or UNIX?

Generally, UNIX is always cheaper and it's also more stable. However, it's not ideal to run .NET or Visual Basic Programs. Windows is more suitable for .NET or Visual Basic Programs.

Once you've sorted all of the technical requirements. It's then time for you to compare price, reliability/uptime, customer support and overall user satisfaction. All of these factors will determine which hosting company is most suitable for your next website.

What is the difference between paid and free hosting?

There are a lot of differences between Paid and Free hosting environments. Free hosting environments generally include ads, banners, pop-ups and other advertising methods that are most likely out of your control. You are also limited by the available features. Free hosting is great for a very basic website, such as a personal one-page website.

Paid hosting is quite flexible because it can offer you a variety of beneficial services. In most cases, paid hosting will provide you with the necessary features needed in building and maintaining a professional website.

How can I choose the right hosting?

Choosing the right web host is critical to running a successful online website. Here are some guidelines you should consider before selecting your web hostin g plan:

Start off by figuring out your hosting needs. If your site requires a lot of bandwidth, a shared hosting plan won't be suitable for you. Instead, you should look into a dedicated hosting solution. You won't be using a ton of bandwidth if security is a concern. Therefore, VPS hosting (a virtual private server) may be a better choice for a more secure website.

Know what type of technologies will your website require. For example, do you need Windows compatibility with tools such as ASP, Microsoft Access or Microsoft SQL? Or will you need Unix-based hosting to effectively use platforms such as WordPress, PHP, Perl and MySQL. Most beginners will want a simple shared hosting account on a Unix-based server. This is typically the easiest to use and will fit your needs as a beginner.

Make sure your web hosting plan gives you an option to upgrade. Other things that you should take into consideration include the length of a web-hosting contract and its renewa l prices.

Last but not least, look for a web-hosting company that offers multiple ways to contact them. That way you'll always have reliable support.

You may also find other hosting services more appropriate depending on your needs. Hosting services such as cloud hosting, e-commerce hosting, reseller hosting and WordPress hosting are providing customers with a lot of flexibility.

Cloud hosting is a great option if you want to make sure you have a lot of storage space and allows you to utilize cloud computing to do so. There are many advantages to selecting cloud hosting, such as guaranteed server resources, redundant data storage and unlimited website growth.

E-commerce hosting is a popular option for many online businesses. In addition to providing customers with ecommerce functionality, many web-hosting service providers are also capable of providing you with a web server to host your website, along with an email server and other standard web-hosting fe atures.

Reseller hosting is ideal for users who are interested in using his or her allotted hard drive space and bandwidth to host websites on behalf of third-parties. To do this, the reseller will need to purchase the host's services wholesale and then sell them to customers separately for a potential profit at retail prices.

WordPress hosting is an ideal platform for customers who are interested in creating a custom-built website. WordPress is popular among customers because it lets you build a professional custom website using a variety of templates, plug-ins and widgets.

What about after picking a provider?

Once you choose your provider, it's time for you to open an account with the monthly plan that fits your needs. If you still have questions about which plan is suitable for you, call their customer support staff and have them assist you through the registration process. Companies will generally charge a credit card on a monthly basis, however, some c ompanies will also offer discounts for paying a yearly payment at once.

After selecting a provider, it's highly recommended that you test your internet speed to ensure that the data is being processed in a timely manner. You can visit CNET's Internet Speed Test to instantly assess your current internet speed.

How to speed up your website? Finding the fastest hosting provider?

People often think that a web host is the main cause of a slow website but, this is often not the case. When picking a provider, it's important for find a hosting provider that is close to your users and has a good amount of RAM and fast CPU power. Beyond that, it's often the way the website is set up that slows it down for users. To ensure that your website speed is optimal for users you need to make sure you pay attention to the following:

  • Minimize HTTP requests to the server. This means that we limit the amount of request that are required to download the page
  • Enable server caching. WIth server caching, after content has been download, the content is stored locally to allow faster access of the content and a reduction of strain on your web server.
  • Enable compression of larger files. Compression reduces the bandwidth of your files, resulting in a lower HTTP response.
  • Remove code bloat. Remove any unnecessary code or plugins.
  • Optimize images. This will reduce overall page size.
  • There are many other ways to increase website speed but, these are the items that will have the biggest impact. You can visit CNET's Internet Speed Test to instantly assess your current internet speed and find a new provider if need be.

Web Exclusive: Bolingbrook’s ‘Alt-right’ to host atheist convention (Fiction)

Content notice:  Depictions of the "Alt-Right" (Reminder: Fiction)

Bolingbrook Beyond Belief. Summer 2019. "Atheism feels good, man!"

A proposed poster for the Bolingbrook Beyond Belief atheist convention.

The Bolingbrook Pepe the Frog Fan Club, a self-described "Alt-right group," announced that they are organizing an atheist convention for the summer of 2018.

"We can't hold rallies anymore because of the counter-protesters," said Dennis, president of the club.  "We can, however, safely host an atheist convention."

The convention, tentatively titled "Bolingbrook Beyond Belief" is inspired by the controversial Mythinformation Conference.  Like Mythicon, "Bolingbrook Beyond Belief" plans to feature predominately "Alt-right" speakers and have liberal "special guests" in the audience.

Alex, the group's liaison to the Atheist Movement, says he strongly believes the "Alt-right" could be great allies:  "Look, we have much in common.  We both believe we're smarter than average people.  We both believe that we're being kept down by lesser people.  We both want to return to a glorious past.  We both hate feminists and Islamists.  We agree on 99 percent on the issues.  Why let a few minor issues, like the alleged humanity of non-whites, keep us apart?"

Dennis agreed:  "Love them or hate them, everyone knows that atheists are smart.  If we host an atheist convention, the public will realize that our ideas are worthy of intellectual consideration.  The atheist movement, in return, will get access to our army of trolls, funding from Mercer's network of alt-right groups, and young men willing to march for atheism.  They'll even leave the torches at home if asked to.   It's a win-win for both of us!  The choice is simple.  Join us and other superior people as we try to peacefully cleanse the world, or let Skepticon define atheism."

Alex pretended to gag when Skepticon was mentioned.

Dennis conceded that while many YouTube personalities have asked to speak at the convention, prominent atheist leaders have not agreed to speak at Bolingbrook Beyond Belief.

Alex felt that would change soon.  "We just sent an invitation to the most militant atheist in the country.  He says he represents all atheists, no matter what their other beliefs are.  So he has to come here.  When he does, other atheist thought leaders will come here.  It's just—"

    "(Expletive Deleted)!"

    "What?"

"David Silverman, the president of American Atheists, just sent me an IM.  He says we're evil, and sent me a link to his Facebook post."

"That's not necessarily a bad thing.  We only promote evil ironically, so that makes it OK.  Is he going to come?"

"No.  He says he leads the marines of atheism, and marines don't support Nazis.  He also says that he'll personally rewrite the dictionary to exclude us from being defined as atheists."

"Damn it!.  Well, we can invite Dave Smalley instead."

"Yes.  Maybe he'll be out of his denial phase by the time the convention starts."

An e-mail from the Bolingbrook Skeptics denounced Bolingbrook Beyond Belief:  "The Alt-right is just a rebranding of fascism.  No matter what you call it, fascism is un-awesome!"

    No ratings yet.

Are your business' infrastructure (website server) and marketing aligned? It is important to apply a culture that aligns these two services.

In this article, I've separated some tips for you to align your PPC and SEO strategies with your hosting or infrastructure. Let's go?

The speed that users access your website will determine your online presence, the performance of your website directly affects the user experience, make this clear.

Reducing the bounce rate of your website is critical, as is the loading time of the pages.

Website hosting is as important as other areas because it will define factors that directly affect users of your website, such as speed and security, for example.

If you have difficulty handling infrastructure configurations, SECNET has the cPanel management service. Perfect for you to focus on business and leave the technical part to our experts.

How to measure the speed of your website?

First step is to know how long your website is taking to open. For this, you can use some tools that do this task, such as GTmetrix and / or Pingdom.

These tools show more than you need, if you want quicker results, opt for a Google Chrome extension that evaluates the loading time of your website. Simple, fast and practical.

One tip is to work with metrics, so that you can evaluate errors and improvements.

    Infrastructure

Infrastructure must go hand in hand with Marketing, for example, here at SECNET, all of our campaigns are monitored, so when necessary our infrastructure is modified as needed.

    Website Hosting

    Cloud Server

The Cloud Server is perfect for businesses that demand performance and flexibility. You can change it according to your need. Perfect for anyone looking for stability.

The infrastructure needs to be secure, with backups and monitoring. This ensures that the data is secure and the time invested in IT is targeted to the business.

A website with optimized pages generates more interaction with users, and consequently a lower rejection rate, I recommend using the SSL Certificate.

Imagine yourself, after sending email marketing, not able to access your website due to the lack of server resources.

    Security as your ally

Try to look at the security of your website as an investment, not as a cost.

In addition to protecting user data and attacks, security can be used as Marketing, try to use a seal on pages, showing the importance of security for your company.

SiteLock, for example, is a great system for protecting your website, as it does scans, identifies vulnerabilities, and protects your website. Perfect because, in addition to protecting your website, it shows interest in protecting customer information.

    Marketing Adverts

Ads you use the right way generate a lot of traffic and sales to your website. But that's not always the case, apart from ad problems such as low CTR or lack of investment, the problem may lie in your infrastructure.

Imagine a virtual store with 150 instant accesses in a non-optimized, shared hosting and receiving attacks will not be cool.

Therefore, investing in a prepared infrastructure is important for the marketing of your business.

    Design

It is common to see beautiful websites, with a well-structured layout, with flashy banners and CTA`s that really catch the eye. But when moving around the website, the situation is totally different.

It is also common to find images not yet optimized, with high sizes, such as 1Mb.

These small details directly affect your hosting if it is not optimized. A slow website makes shopping and browsing difficult.

Tip: Optimize your images in e-Commerce.

    SEO

The accesses of organic origin have great importance for your website, and this is of no use if your website is slow.

That's why SECNET has optimized servers, ready to serve all levels of e-Commerce, from small to large virtual stores.
