U.K. Hosting Company Accidentally Deletes Customer Web Sites

U.K. Hosting Company Accidentally Deletes Customer Web Sites

A British Web hosting provider accidentally deleted data from several virtual private servers (VPS) that hosted its customers' Web sites. 123-reg, which has about 800,000 customers in the U.K., acknowledged the error and has been trying to restore the data since Saturday. However, many of the Web sites it hosts remain offline. The problem hit 67 servers out of 115,000 the company has across Europe.

In an e-mail to customers, 123-reg said the data was removed by a clean-up script that it ran to show the company the number of machines active against a master database. An error on the script caused the database to show zero records for some live virtual private services. For customers, that result created a failure scenario that effectively deleted what was on the host server.

Customer Backups Recommended

123-reg's virtual private servers are unmanaged, and the company said it always recommends that customers back up their Web site data to safeguard against unexpected issues. The company added that customers who had purchased backup services from 123-reg could be back online anytime, as could anyone using another Web site backup service.

Although 123-reg did backups of its customers' Web site data, with that many accounts it's impossible to do a complete restore without eliminating any incremental work done by any of the accounts that had not been deleted, Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group, told us.

"Backups may be done on different schedules with full backups happening occasionally and incremental backups happening more often," said Enderle. "It is clear their restore process is nasty and likely the result of their getting a cheap storage management product over a more expensive comprehensive offering. The folks who sell the more comprehensive and expensive offerings are likely thinking 'I told you so.'" Enderle added that this is not an usual problem for Web hosting companies that operate on small budgets.

Most Sites Back On

123-reg hosts about 1.7 million Web sites in the U.K, but the company said only a small percentage of them were deleted by the rogue script. The company posted updates about the error on its status page. 123-reg said today that service for the majority of customers affected has been restored, and that it's working on getting the rest of the deleted Web sites back online.

The customers who were hit by the deletion weren't shy about telling the world about their frustrations. One Web site owner wrote on Twitter, "Spoke with @123reg earlier today regarding VPS issues. Was told a week minimum for e-mail update and more than likely all data lost."

123-reg said it is still investigating the restoration of each VPS on a case-by-case basis and is working individually with customers to keep them informed of the Web site recovery process. 123-reg said that data recovery company Kroll was helping with the process of restoring data.

The lesson to be taken from this incident is that consumers should be willing to pay for a superior storage management provider, even if it's a more expensive option, Enderle said. "There are other criteria other than just price that you need to use to asses a vendor," he said.

A solution to this problem is to use Virtuozzo VPS. This VPS system automatically backs up any website 3 times a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. This means that, in 99.99% of the cases there's a backup available. Another advantage is that backups can easily be restored with the click of a button.

This delete has really messed up my business, lost almost 12 customers data with them :( I really don't care about 6 month free hosting they are offering. Just moved all my sites to Webhost.uk.net after some good online research.

I have been informed by the customer service manager today that my data and backups are unrecoverable. I am demanded that 123reg compensate for the cost of a new website, damage to reputation and loss of earnings.

The key difference makers that helped them climb the rankings include the strong uptime record for the past one year, lock in renewal price after signup, and the fact that users get to buy a domain at just $1.99/year if they purchase a web host.

InterServer has been tested with BitCatcha for server speed, as have all the hosts who are reviewed. The selection score for the top five requires an above average performance when compared with 10,000,000 samples at BitCatcha.

A spokesperson for Web Hosting Secrets Revealed explained, "This is big news for InterServer and for our regular readers, who are always on the lookout for the next big thing, now have cause for some real excitement. The wonderful thing for our readers is that InterServer has an incredible product offer to go with it, which will be seriously tempting for small businesses, individual users and others looking for the best possible offer.

Learn what are standard services that are provided through managed hosting and how they can benefit small to medium sized businesses.

Managed hosting refers to the IT provisional mode in which a provider company leases servers and associated applications and hardware to a client. The providing company houses and manages all equipment. The client may or may not have administrative access to these servers and applications but rarely utilizes this access. In most cases, a web-based interface is used by the client to interact with the hosting provider.

Standard Services Offered Through Managed Hosting:

Set up and configuration of hardwareSet up and configuration of softwareTechnical SupportPatch ManagementSystem maintenanceMonitoring All Hardware, Software and System FunctioningUpdating ClientAdditional (or Optional Services):Backups of Systems, Hardware and SoftwareLoad balancingDisaster RecoveryVulnerability ScanningID – Intrusion DetectionPreventing and Mitigating DDoS: Distributed Denial of Service

The services a company is offered by their managed hosting provider depends entirely on the level of management they opt for. Managed hosting has two options: fully managed hosting and partial managed hosting." In a fully managed hosting package, the goal is to allow the client to sit back and enjoy their server without any involvement beyond receiving regular updates. A dedicated webmaster works around the clock to monitor and manage your server systems and hardware. Partial managed web hosting is less expensive but requires more hands on involvement from the client. Your systems will still be managed by a dedicated webmaster but you will be responsible for some administrative tasks. The upside of this choice is that you, as a user, have a higher degree in control over your systems.

The Benefits - Managed Hosting and Your CompanyThe benefits of managed hosting are most acutely experienced by small to mid sized companies. For these companies, the cost of signing up with a managed hosting provider is significantly less than that of hiring, training and monitoring an in-house webmaster. Additionally, companies save significant amounts of resources and time on the maintenance of these server systems. Managed hosting providers give companies the ability to focus on their business without wasting time and energy on IT management. Here is a brief look at additional benefits of managed hosting.

Security and Experience: With managed hosting services, you are paying for expertise and experience – and the peace of mind that accompanies this. Highly skilled technical specialists are proactively managing and updating your IT infrastructure while you focus on growing your business. Furthermore, managed hosting providers utilize multiple layers of redundancy to ensure that no single point of failure is present in your infrastructure – thereby creating a higher level of security than businesses could create on their own.

Decreased Staffing Needs: Outsourcing your IT infrastructure needs to a managed hosting provider means significantly reduced staffing needs and expenses. For one fee, a managed hosting provider will replace an entire department of in house IT tech support while offering the 24 hour coverage and management that would be impossible to provide with an in house staff. This 24 hour care is often provided at no additional cost and can mean the difference between 12 hours of interrupted service and a secure business continuity plan.

Accelerated Global Expansion: Companies with managed hosting providers are shown to be more prepared for rapid international growth. Managed hosting providers with international operations have the ability to deploy international infrastructure quickly and replicate domestic solutions abroad. This allows for rapid expansion across international borders. Hiring the tech support needed to accomplish this with an in house team would be costly, ineffective and inefficient.

For small to mid-sized companies, managed hosting providers offer the flexibility and expertise required for business expansion.

As Volico Hosting's director of operations' DOO), Gadi Hus's leadership role entails being ultimately responsible for all day-to-day management decisions. Furthermore, he oversees all engineering aspects of the facility and ensures that internal and client projects are on-schedule and conducted in accordance to the policies and controls set within the respective task.

    J Clare:

    Posted: 2016-04-21 @ 7:46am PT

I have been informed by the customer service manager today that my data and backups are unrecoverable. I am demanded that 123reg compensate for the cost of a new website, damage to reputation and loss of earnings.

Researchers patrolling dark web uncover trojan plot targeting web hosting service

    April 19, 2016

Web hosting provider Invision Power Services (IPS) this month was saved from a systems compromise that could have potentially damaged its clients, after researchers gathered intelligence on a cybercriminal plot that was unfolding on the dark web.

The scheme was spearheaded by a bad actor dubbed AlphaLeon, who is also known to have sold the recently discovered trojan Thanatos, aka Alphabot, on the online black market. According to a new report from SurfWatch Labs, one of AlphaLeon's latest schemes was compromising IPS via an unpatched software vulnerability. Had the adversary's campaign gone undetected, IPS could have secondarily compromised its client base, which includes some professional sports leagues and media and entertainment companies.

Upon being notified, Forest, Va.-based IPS confirmed via a penetration test that a malicious hacker had, indeed, infiltrated the company's managed hosting environment, which is operated via Amazon Web Services. Such unauthorized root-level access would have allowed the hackers to install exploit kits that could have infected users visiting IPS' hosted sites with malware capable of stealing bank credentials and bitcoins, delivering ransomware, launching distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks and more.

Fortunately, SurfWatch threat intelligence analysts appear to have caught the campaign before it was launched. Adam Meyer, chief security strategist at SurfWatch Labs, said that his team of researchers is able to detect dark web threats such as this one through a combination of automated scanning and human investigation. "We also have built a quantity of undercover personalities," Meyer told SCMagazine.com, "and we use those personalities to get into areas where we can observe the back-room conversations" where cybercriminals wheel and deal.

SurfWatch would not name IPS's clients, nor did the company identify the specific software vulnerability that was exploited. SCMagazine.com's call to IPS for further comment went unanswered.

How domain name and web hosting impact SEO

When starting an online store or e-commerce business, online exposure is one of your top priorities. You want to have good rankings, good traffic and positive conversion. It may appear that a website's domain name and the hosting service you use do not play a significant role, but they can greatly impact your SEO - so more time needs to be devoted to choosing the best available options. Let's explore these options.

Uniformity between a company's official name and website URL If you want to build trust between you and your consumers, it would be wise for both your official store and online store to have the same name. Unfortunately, getting the domain name you want can be difficult, and people usually compromise in this area. However, if you are starting a new company - especially if it's an online-based business - you have an advantage; you can find a domain name you like first and then name your company after it.Keyword detection An important aspect of finding an adequate domain name is keyword search. If you want exceptional visibility, your domain name should contain a keyword that is related to either your products or services. Good examples include: Bookdepository (for selling books), Bustmold (mold removal services), Mangareader (a website with digital versions of manga comics). This way, when people google the product they want to buy, if the product is in the name, the site will be more visible.

When you are picking a name for your site, it should be easy to remember and easy to spell. The name should consist of either one or two words, and one of those words should be the name of the product or service.

Server uptime It is imperative that your website is available for customers 24/7. If your site is frequently unavailable, then one of its essential purposes is defeated. The more people you drive away the less traffic you will generate. It is a major deal-breaker if a hosting service can't guarantee that your site will be up and running 99,99% of the time.

For a website that simply displays content, this may not be too harmful, but for an e-commerce website server uptime is a major priority. A good web hosting service can provide desirable uptime, good page speed, and various other perks like a free domain. You need to be aware what defines a good hosting provider if you want to run a successful website with decent traffic. In the long run, websites that are unavailable too often fall in SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages) and this means that all your SEO efforts are wasted.

Loading speed Kissmetrics has a wonderful infographic that explains how page loading speed can affect your traffic. Basically, a response that is delayed for one second can result in 7% of lost conversion, whereas a two second delay can spike that loss up to 40%. Of course, this responsiveness is also influenced by the server's location. To be more precise it is influenced by distance of geolocation between the server and the user. A good web hosting service should provide you with distributive power, i.e. it should have a content delivery network that can ensure that your site is stored on more than one server.Accessibility in form of payment systems A mutually satisfactory transaction is something that can bring your customers back for another shopping tour. One way to ensure this positive experience is to have numerous payment gateways integrated into your website or online store. Furthermore, to make sure you build a solid bond of trust with your customers, you need to analyse the payment gateway server security of your online store which, once again, a good web host should be able to provide.

Your web host plays an important role in how satisfied your customers will be with your online store. As long as you meet their needs in terms of payment gateways, quick responsiveness, and if your customer support acts swiftly (your host should also make sure that your customer support chat is fully operational), you will have a good start. Remember to pay close attention to your name as well, because it will ensure that your site is more easily discovered.
