Running a Web Hosting Business – 8 Quick Tips

If you are planning on starting up a web hosting business or already have one up and running, there are some very important tips that you will need to keep in mind. The more of these tips and information you have, the better your chances are going to be of succeeding in your endeavour. A lot of people who try to set up a web hosting business fail miserably, so you will therefore need to arm yourself with as much quality information and advice as possible.

Choosing the right Company name

When you are going about starting a web hosting company, it is crucial that you come up with the right name. The name of your company will say a lot about it, so you will therefore have to really put some thought into it. You want a name that is going to project an image of professionalism while relating to the services you offer. One of the biggest mistakes that people make when starting up this kind of company is to use a name that doesn't really have anything to do with web hosting services.

Offer the right services

You should make a point of choosing the right services to offer depending on your core demographic. If you plan on catering to mostly businesses, you will definitely want to make sure to offer things like unlimited bandwidth and storage space. If you are going to cater to mostly people with personal websites, you probably don't need to offer as much. The services you offer will play a very large role in determining just how successful your web hosting business is going to be, so you will therefore need to focus on this quite a bit.

Offer the best Technical Support

The quality of the technical support you offer is going to be paramount when it comes to running a web hosting business. You will definitely want to think about offering 24/7 technical support for your customers so they can get the help they need when they need it. If your customer support isn't any good, you will have a very hard time keeping your customers for any length of time. This is something that too many people who start web hosting companies fail to realize, and as a direct result they go under very quickly.

Invest in great hardware

One of the best things that you can do when it comes to running a successful web hosting company is to invest in high quality hardware. If the hardware that you are using is old and outdated, you will not be able to provide your customers with the quality services they need and deserve. While it may be tempting to go cheap on the hardware to save money, you will definitely regret it later on.

Use Private nameservers

Another thing that you should take into consideration is using private nameservers. There are a ton of benefits associated with private nameservers, including the fact that they will allow you to easily switch from one hosting provider to another if you are going to be reselling hosting services. After you make the migration, the only thing that you will need to do is change the nameservers' IP's from the ones of the old hosting company to the new dns.

Be Smart about Marketing

You will need to be smart about how you market your web hosting company so that you can attract as many new customers as possible. One of the most common failings of new web hosting businesses is that they simply don't know how to go about advertising themselves. You'll have to make a point of increasing your search engine ranking as much as possible so that you won't have any issues with getting customers on a regular basis.

Project a Professional Image

There are a lot of different ways to go about creating a professional image for your company, such as designing a good logo. The logo that you create for your company will typically be the first thing people see, so you therefore want to make a good impression. You should at least think about hiring someone to design a professional-looking logo so that you can achieve the sort of image you need to. The more professional and relevant your logo is, the better your chances will be of succeeding.

Always put your customers first

Always make sure that you are putting your customers first, because otherwise it is going to be impossible for your business to survive more than a year or so. One of the big mistakes that so many people who sell web hosting services make is to not put their customers first. Your customers are the ones keeping you in business after all, so you will therefore have to take good care of them. Whenever you are thinking about making a change with your business, you should always ask yourself if it will ultimately benefit your customers.

Important Features for every web hosting company

There are certain features that every web hosting company should offer its customers, and you will definitely want to know what they are.

Amount of storage: Are you planning on offering your customers unlimited storage? If not, you should really think about it.

Amount of bandwidth: The amount of bandwidth that you offer your customers is something else that you should consider. If you are planning on catering mostly to businesses, you shoulddefinitely offer unlimited bandwidth.

Number of domains and subdomains: The number of domains as well as subdomains will be crucial as well. A lot of your clients are probably going to need multiple domains, so you will need to keep this in mind.

Email accounts and features: How many different email accounts will you allow your customers to have? You should take the time to think about this.

Language support: Make sure that you offer support for numerous server-side languages so you will take care of all your customers' needs.

Should You Be Considering Web-Scale Networking?

Web-scale networking, also known as hyperscale, is a concept that has been popularized by companies like Google, Netflix and Facebook, who adopted this model for its proven cost economics, resiliency, scalability, and in some cases, better performance for large companies.

In recent months, the web-scale strategy has begun to gain the attention of enterprises in response to the changing data center landscape and growth of compute-heavy, complex technologies like AI, machine learning, and big data analytics initiatives. What should IT pros know about web-scale?

Web-Scale Explained At its core, a web-scale strategy is a set of enabling technologies and practices that provide enterprises the same capabilities, cost structure and flexibility that the very largest Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) can deliver. The more realistic definition of web-scale is AWS or Azure done inexpensively, but often with considerable compromise. Although you're receiving some of the same capabilities of CSPs for less money, your organization may not have the same rich or mature feature set.

Ultimately, a web-scale strategy, when successfully implemented and maintained, can provide the cost structure, capability and flexibility CSPs themselves enjoy. However, it also requires significant IT discipline, skill and up-front cost investment that are off-putting for many businesses.

So, why try it?

Wholesale Cloud Computing For organizations that have the wherewithal (read: budget, skills, staff) to implement web-scale, there are quite a few benefits that make the investment worth the effort. Cost, certainly, is a key incentive for an organization's transition to web-scale architecture. Companies like Walmart might foot an AWS bill upwards of $100M a year.

If you have the IT skill resources, especially if the CSP is a direct competitor, why not implement a CSP-modeled environment yourself to reap "wholesale" pricing based on the same OEM infrastructure providers? This is an especially important benefit for companies that have applications with large data footprints: industrial Internet of Things (IoT) deployments, for example, can include millions of sensors that generate massive amounts of data to be processed and require infrastructure that can appropriately scale to that size operation.

In other cases, data security concerns play a role in determining whether an on-premises web-scale implementation makes sense. Healthcare organizations or government agencies remain wary of hosting patient or personal data outside the firewall, despite CSP compliance certifications. Similarly, some organizations may find that they're able to manage corporate espionage by keeping sensitive, proprietary data onsite via a web-scale architecture rather than a remote cloud platform.

Another driver might be a need to provide commodity services primitives to harmonize distributed complexity. If you're a business with a large online presence, you have already implemented complex methods to ensure data availability, but you also can expect that basic infrastructure will also increase in complexity - such as spinning out into multiple regions or availability zones. Web-scale is known for delivering against the need for open-ended, scale-out of internet connected users.

Finally, there are a few fringe advantages, such as improved performance in the absence of the need to ship data 10, 20, or even just 60 milliseconds away, and significantly reduced licensing costs thanks to web-scale's open-source roots. This only further sweetens the pot for big companies that want to control their IT operation soup to nuts.

Implementation Challenges Big benefits, however, don't come without big challenges and considerations.

First and foremost, the skill required to implement a web-scale architecture is relatively enormous. CSPs like AWS and Azure have spent years developing their technology, hosting platforms and add-on services - and they have the luxury of being able to focus only on developing and innovating these things. AWS's "primitives" offerings, a collection of over 100 tools that each focus on one competency (like container management, or queuing services, etc.), are just one example of how specialized the provider has become.

Meanwhile, at the enterprise level, IT professionals are still tasked with handling help desk requests, and just generally "keeping the lights on," all of which detract from the always-on dedication to maintaining a web-scale implementation. On top of that, investing in web-scale is a massive monetary undertaking and most businesses today are rightfully focused on cost efficiency. That means your existing IT infrastructure is more than likely extremely interconnected and chock-full of single points of failure - when a storage SAN system goes down and simultaneously knocks the network offline because of a DNS outage - which is ultimately the opposite of web-scale architecture ideology.

The bottom line is, it's impossible to have the IT team responsible for running applications that are critical to the business also taking care of the platform. You need a dedicated set of developers and admins taking care of your platform, which requires additional time, skill and monetary resources that most businesses just don't have.

Should You Be Considering Web-Scale? Of course, these challenges aren't to say your business won't eventually implement at least some web-scale architectures. There are three questions that both you, the IT professional, and your business should consider, whether you're ready to transition to web-scale now or are contemplating for the future:

  • Are we big enough? If you're large enough to support the cost and skill requirements, web-scale is a good idea. It delivers extreme flexibility, cost savings and customization capabilities without being tied to a CSP or SLA. Currently, there is no standard "ideal business size" for web-scale deployments. This is what the market at-large is trying to determine as the benefits of web-scale computing become even more popularized. Let's just say that for now, if your company would balk at the notion of hundreds of internal developers, or you're at the size and scale of Facebook, Google, Walmart, or your CSP light bill is a major portion of your overall budget, your organization likely doesn't need the same infrastructure size of those companies and web-scale. It's probably not the best investment in the near-term.
  • Are we skilled enough? Does your IT department have the technical skills necessary to stand up - and continue to maintain - an architecture designed to model the biggest cloud players? Not only will your organization need to invest in developers to facilitate the ongoing management and maintenance of the web-scale platform, but as a department, you will need to start thinking differently about how you approach IT. Big companies like Nike or Walmart aim to hire large teams specifically for ongoing support their web-scale IT architecture and it's a necessary element of web-scale. You need a dedicated team to manage this platform to successfully achieve its purported benefits.
  • Are we, as a business and an IT department, committed and flexible enough to fundamentally alter the way we do IT? At the end of the day, web-scale is synonymous with an ongoing commitment to regular restructuring. Remember: AWS®, Azure® and Google® are exclusively focused on innovation and service development and regularly move the goal posts when it comes to ensuring your business has the most up-to-date infrastructure and technology capabilities. By implementing web-scale architecture, your enterprise will be chasing CSPs and their ongoing technological advancements forever. If you're large enough, that's okay. But in most cases, this is a critical requirement that proves intimidating-and off-putting-for IT decision-makers who tend to think of IT investment as closed-feature capex.
  • Closing Thoughts At the end of the day, web-scale computing is fundamentally transformative, but requires such a significant IT personnel and monetary investment from enterprises that it's unrealistic to expect the majority of companies will make a transition to this strategy in the near future.

However, CSPs like Microsoft Azure are working to deliver at least some Platform as a Service (PaaS) functionality to traditional enterprises with solutions like Azure Stack®, which offers a reduced feature set of that you can run on-premises.  Of course, AWS® will likely follow in its footsteps.

While web-scale computing may not be in most organizations' near-future, its benefits are beginning to trickle down to more realistic deployment options. By staying in tune with these developments, you may find opportunities to realize key benefits of web-scale architecture where the fit is good, without debilitating teething pains.

Local Airbnb host says house rental website is a safe, positive option

    Posted: Wed 4:57 PM, Sep 27, 2017

FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) - A Fargo Airbnb host says the online service is not only safe, but it is good for the community.

Jay Nelson has a home located in the heart of downtown Fargo. "When we bought the house it was a family that had 7 children, and as the children moved out they converted the upper floors to apartments." He explains.

One of the upstairs apartments he rents out through Airbnb. The section of the house where Nelson lives in locked separately. When a guest comes to stay they get keys for the locked upstairs apartment, which is comparable to a small studio apartment.

"There's been no problems, in fact, this apartment was rented over the weekend and the people that check out. This is the condition they left it in." He says while standing in the spotless room.

Nelson says he chooses who he wants to stay with him based off the reviews left online by previous hosts. "We are all in the system, and so there is that mutual trust already established, and there is that contact information already in the system so if anything does go not as expected, it's easy to track down who is responsible."

He is not concerned after hearing what happened in the twin cities. An Airbnb guest was arrested after police say he tried to sexually assault the host's 7-year-old daughter. Nelson says the online service is as safe as it can be. "Even when someone is pre-qualified with Airbnb, as a host and a guest it is possible that humans will do things that you didn't expect them to do. That may have been a one off incident; I haven't heard very many things happening with Airbnb or Uber. I also driver Uber, but it does happen because you are dealing with humans."

By the way, Nelson's Airbnb is $89 a night, he keeps it local with Fargo art, Fargo books, and Fargo beer in the fridge.

3 Industry Trends and Big Changes in the World of Web Hosting

By Zac Johnson, CEO of blogging.org.

Web hosting is something every online brand and business needs. While it might seem like you can set it up once and forget about it for years to come, it's actually not that simple. If you lose track of advancements in web hosting, not only will your site continue to be hosted on tired and old technology and platforms, but it could also harm your site performance and search rankings in the process.

As someone who has been in the internet marketing industry for over 20 years now, I've had the pleasure of seeing web hosting in its most basic and clunky form back in the mid-90s as well as the amazingly fast and "hands-free" hosting options that are offered today. Such advancements in web hosting have not only made it easy for anyone to get started with a website or blog of their own, but also for organizations and brands to scale in size and technology at any given time.

With all of this in mind, let's take a look at some of the latest industry trends and changes in the world of web hosting and how you can keep your online business ahead of the competition by using such technology and changes to your advantage.

    Cost Efficient Hosting Plans

While the costs of web hosting have always been quite minimal, some hosting providers can be more expensive than others. Since most hosting plans are billed on a monthly basis, this can add up over time and cost your business a decent amount of money in the long run. Whether you are running off a shared server or your own dedicated server, be sure to keep an eye on how much you are paying while looking at competitor pricing in the market.

If you're in the market for a new web hosting provider, check if they have any discounted hosting plans available when ordering for 12, 24 or even 36 months in advance. Take note of any additional upsell services that might be built into such packages as well. Many of these additional services often aren't required or wanted by site owners.

    WordPress and Performance-Based Hosting

In addition to keeping an eye on the costs of your web hosting, it's important to make sure your hosting is set up to properly host your site. Not all websites are the same, which means they shouldn't all be thrown on the same type of hosting plans. With more websites being hosted on WordPress than ever before, it might be a good idea to go with a hosting solution built specifically for a WordPress-based site.

The benefit here is that you have a web hosting provider that not only is built to run WordPress at full performance, but you will also have contact with a team that knows WordPress and can offer premium customer support in the process. WordPress is one of the easiest and fastest ways to start a website or blog, but there are many ways it can slow down the performance and speed of your site if it's not set up and managed properly. This is where advanced WordPress hosting-based solutions come in handy.

Consolidation in the World of Cloud Hosting

Cloud hosting has quickly become one of the most attractive ways to host a website, blog or even store information on the internet today. When it comes to choosing a cloud hosting provider, keep in mind that Google, Amazon and Microsoft have some major dominance in this space.

With this in mind, be sure to consider cloud hosting options from each of these providers before going with another, smaller company solution. Not only will your site and data be hosted by a trusted solution that is likely powering millions of other big name brands and web sites; they also usually have competitive pricing that can't be matched by other providers, as they have such massive hosting solutions at scale.

As mentioned previously, web hosting isn't the sexiest of topics and it's not one that you might be thinking about after it's set up. However, the success and performance of your site ultimately rely on the uptime, speed and reliability of your site. Be sure to understand the current technology and industry changes in the world of web hosting and how they might be able to improve your online business in the process.

Teams from a Mexican Baseball League will host a 'fiesta' in the Valley

For the first time in the Valley, they're bringing three teams from the Mexican Pacific League.

    Yolanda Garcia-Espinoza, KPNX 3:07 PM. MST September 22, 2017

Durante los dos días de fiesta habrá tres partidos y por primera vez llegan al valle tres equipos de la liga mexicana el sábado 30 de septiembre y domingo primero de octubre. (Foto: Facebook de Mexican Baseball Fiesta)

For seven consecutive years, the Mexican Baseball Fiesta has come to the Valley. This year, on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, Mesa will host the family-friendly event, featuring fun, food, music and baseball.

The event gives Valley residents a chance to experience Mexico's Winter League Season.

"The Mexican Baseball Fiesta was born in 2011, with the idea of having teams from Mexico, from the Winter League to come and play here in Arizona, to the fans that were following those teams or were from those cities in Mexico and were living here in Arizona," said Francisco Gamez, one of the event organizers.

Those who have experienced a winter league game in Mexico know that it's more than a baseball game, it's a big party in the stands.

"We have the music, we have the food, we have the mascots running around the whole game. The music doesn't stop, just with a pitch and then it comes back. That's why we name it a Fiesta, it's a big party," Gamez said.

For the first time in the Valley, they're bringing three teams from the Mexican Pacific League.

"We're going to have Los Naranjeros, Cañeros de Los Mochis and the champions of last year's league, Aguilas de Mexicali. So, this is the first time, we have had for the last five year, only two or one, so, this year we're going to have three teams from the league coming," said Gamez.

The first game will be on Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. The other two games will be on Sunday. All three will take place at Sloan Park at 2330 W. Rio Salado Parkway in Mesa, Arizona.

How Are Blog Design, Page Loading Time, And Web Hosting Related?

    Blog Design

The design of a blog, the loading time of its individual pages, and the web hosting responsible for maintaining its existence on the web appear to be different and separate concepts but are actually deeply related. They are very important factors that contribute to the success of a blog. Get acquainted with their interrelationship through the following points.

Blog Design Affects Page Loading Time

Broadly, blog design refers to the overall blog structure, appearance, and the way a blog works as they are viewed on web browsers. It encompasses a wide range of topics, from the selection of the colours, the setting up of the layout, the adding of the various elements, the planning of how the content is to be delivered, and the conceptualisation of the "personality" intended for the blog. It's about many things that directly and indirectly influence the way a blog looks and works.  Blog design may even take branding into account.

Given all of these, it can be said with certainty that blog design indeed affects page loading time. A blog design that has not been optimised is bound to result in poor page loading time. Pages, as used here by the way, don't only mean the "Pages" in WordPress (as distinguished from "posts" in the WordPress dashboard) but also refer to the individual pages if each post. The time it takes for a post to load is also affected by blog design.

When it comes to displaying thumbnails for post snippets, a poorly thought out design can lead to a major page loading slowdown. In particular, not downsizing images for the snippet thumbnails (and simply changing the dimensions of the images as they appear on the snippets) means that you are basically loading dozens of full-size images all at once, as you load a page. This means a massive page size despite showing only snippets with thumbnails that may even too small to mean anything. Worse, if you have snippets persistently shown on every page (on the sidebars or footer), you will end up having a dismal page loading time across the board.

On the other hand, the amount of page elements added to a blog also has an effect on page loading time. Expect a slowdown if you add background music, a video gallery that automatically plays, a large header image (made fancier by having rotationally changing pictures every time a page is loaded), and interactive elements such as games and polls.

Ads, additionally, contribute to the page loading dilemma. You certainly want the maximum number of acceptable/tolerable ads to maximise revenues but are you willing to take the slowdown they can bring? The adding of video ads and banner ads that feature large images or animated graphics can negatively affect page loading time.

Even if the loading of the ads can be isolated from the actual loading of the blog, it can't be helped that some visitors of the blog may think that the blog has poor loading time or is not that responsive as they see blank spaces on the page. Anyway, just to clarify, the adding of ads is also part of blog design as the placement of these ads also need to be planned, including the choice of the type of ads to be shown.

Moreover, it's important to make sure that you have a clean code for your blog design. Errors and other problems in the code can affect page loading speed. When using JavaScript, in particular, it's important to observe clean coding best practices.

Web Hosting Can Affect Page Loading

Not many may realise this but the web host you choose can also have an impact on page loading time. Just because you are paying for your web host (instead of relying on the free hosting on WordPress or Blogger for example) doesn't mean you can already expect perfect page loading time. It's also important to meticulously choose your web host.

It's important to ascertain that the web host you choose has the track record for ensuring fast performance. If you are targeting a specific region – say the UK, you'd want to get a UK-based web hosting service with local data centers. Ideally, you'd want to choose a web host that can let you choose web servers or data centres or one that has servers in different parts of the world, and can perform efficient switching to deliver the fastest connections possible.

Furthermore, it's important to have a web host that has adequate protection against online threats. DoS, DDoS, and other cyberattacks are already too prevalent nowadays. Such attacks can siphon your allotted bandwidth to slow down your blog or even shut it down completely.  If your web host is attacked and is unable to properly defend itself, not only your page loading time will be affected but also the uptime or the entire online existence of your blog.

    Specific Web Hosting

Your web hosting choice may have to take the specific features of your blog into account. Your blog could be using technologies that are not supported by some hosting companies or may not be compatible with what they can offer. This is something you need to remember as you may end up ditching an important feature of your blog because the host you choose cannot support it. It's important to prudently make your decision as to the right WordPress host to choose, even though most web hosts nowadays are already able to support almost all the technologies and special features of blogs.

For example, you may need a web host that has dynamic caching based on Nginx to ensure that your complex image galleries or multimedia content are properly or optimally rendered. You may also need other features like staging servers or CDN. In some cases, the problem is not necessarily the lack of support for the technologies you want to use but the insufficiency. That's why you really to clarify everything with the web host before finalising the deal.

Ultimately, blog design, web hosting, and page loading time are related because they all figure in creating the kind of experience you give your blog readers. They have their respective roles in making sure that your blog succeeds in what it is aimed at achieving.

Chainfire Announces Firmware.mobi, a Website Hosting Stock Boot and Recovery Images

If you've ever tried to search for stock images to fastboot flash on your device, it can be pretty annoying. Having to navigate old XDA threads trying to find the right version can be a complete pain as very few companies, other than ones like Google and OnePlus, actually release their stock images. To help tackle this problem for users, XDA Senior Recognized Developer Chainfire has announced his newest project called firmware.mobi.

It contains all of the stock images he has been able to get his hands on over the years (which is a lot). How it works is simple, just open the website and search for your device. A list of files including their MD5 and SHA-1 hashes and file size will be available for you to peruse. Users can submit their own files and folders too! If you find that a device isn't in the repository but you have the files for it, simply submit them through the option labeled "Dropbox" on the home page.

Currently, only the desktop version of the website is available. When you visit the site on your phone, you are greeted with a prompt stating that the mobile version/app is in the works. Not a huge deal at the moment, but it'll certainly be nice when it launches!

This is probably the coolest part of the website. When you find the device you want and you have chosen the file package, you can select the "CF Auto Root" option, which will pre-package root with your download. Not only that, you can customize various system aspects apart from root. You can change the installation mode, existence of suhide, encryption settings, factory reset protection, and even selinux mode!

Go check out the site, look for your device and see what you think, and please submit any files you have for devices that may not be in the repository yet!

Rhizome to Host National Forum on Ethics and Archiving the Web

Rhizome, in collaboration with the University of California at Riverside Library (UCR), the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities (MITH), and the Documenting the Now project, was awarded $100,000 by IMLS to host a national forum to address ethical issues facing the web archiving field. The forum will is hosted place March 22-24, 2018 at our longtime affiliate and host, the New Museum in New York City.

This National Forum will convene archives professionals, artists, activists, net culture critics, journalists, and designers/developers to explore how to build social media archives that protect the rights of users and communities while chronicling contemporary cultures and social movements. An open call for participants and attendees will be announced in October.

In 2015, Rhizome launched the Webrecorder initiative, a flagship project of its digital preservation program, to develop a new platform to easily archive and immediately reconstruct fully interactive copies of almost any modern webpage. Webrecorder is a powerful web archiving system, offered directly, for free to users of all kinds. Through Webrecorder, Rhizome aims to support decentralized, specialized born-digital archives that center the interests of the users and communities they serve.

Archiving social media has been a key concern of the Webrecorder initiative, and the National Forum builds on a successful series of 'Digital Social Memory' events which addressed the topic. Both iterations of DSM have brought together artists, activists, and archivists to talk about social media as cultural practice, and how it is and will be remembered. The conversations supported by this program directly inform ongoing product development.

Our partner, Documenting the Now, is a project of University of Maryland, University of California at Riverside, and Washington University in St. Louis. They have created a tool and community supporting the ethical collection, use, and preservation of social media content. Formed in response to the emergence of Twitter as a central communication channel during the 2014 protests in Ferguson, Mo., DocNow seeks to protect the rights of content creators while chronicling historically significant events.

The National Forum is organized by Michael Connor, Rhizome's artistic director, Aria Dean, Rhizome's assistant curator for net art and digital culture, Bergis Jules, University & Political Papers Archivist at UC Riverside and Community Lead, DocNow, and Ed Summers, Lead Developer at Maryland Institute for Technology and Technical Lead of DocNow.

The National Forum on Ethics and Archiving the Web was made possible by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Major support for the Webrecorder project is provided by The Andrew W Mellon Foundation.

Amazon Web Services Now Approved to Host Defense Department Secrets

    The Associated Press

    15 Sep, 201715 Sep, 2017

The Defense Department and Pentagon's highest level of unclassified information may now be stored within Amazon's cloud. According to the company's official statement:

We are pleased to announce that Amazon Web Services has achieved a Provisional Authorization (PA) by the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) for Impact Level (IL) 5 workloads, as defined in the Department of Defense (DoD) Cloud Computing (CC) Security Requirements Guide (SRG), in the AWS GovCloud (US) Region.

DDS Director Chris Lynch confirmed that they have "deployed our first ever national security system, or Impact Level 5, to AWS GovCloud," and expects the results to be dramatic. According to Lynch, "the real impact is that when we are done, we are going to take something that took three weeks down to 15 minutes."

Amazon Web Services joins Microsoft and IBM as the third company with the authorization to host some of our most valuable information. AWS also boasts that it was the only cloud able to "meet the IL5 security requirements and scale of the US Air Force's GPS OCX program," a process which required no less than "200+ Dedicated Hosts running upwards of 1,000 individual Virtual Machines. Each Virtual Machine needed at least eight vCPUs and 32GB RAM."

AWS continues to dominate service of the greater intelligence community, not least because of its $600 million deal with the Central Intelligence Agency. All told, 17 intelligence organizations are currently served by the AWS C2S cloud.

The company will add as many as 1,500 jobs to in the East Coast, with the debut of a new AWS corporate headquarter in Fairfax County. "US-East" will exclusively serve governmental interests, including expanded support for the Department of Defense. The funding for this will come from within President Trump's robust $8.5 billion budget for such services — roughly ten percent of the government's overall IT budget.

IOC Makes It Official: Stage Set for LA to Host 2028 Olympics

    What to Know
  • LA will host the Olympics in 2028, Paris was selected as the 2024 host city
  • Boston originally won the U.S. host city bid, but dropped out of the running
  • LA previously hosted Olympics in 1932 and 1984
  • The cauldron was already blazing at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum hours ahead of the International Olympic Committee's announcement Wednesday in Peru that Los Angeles will host the 2028 Summer Olympics and Paralympics.

The announcement, a formality that capped what has been an unprecedented host city selection process, followed months of California representatives, including former Olympians, casting their support behind a host bid. For Los Angeles, it will be the third time hosting the Olympics after the 1932 and 1984 Games. Paris, which was awarded the 2024 Games, also will be hosting for the third time.

The two cities originally bid to host the Olympics in 2024, but LA will be given four more years to prepare for the world's most inclusive athletic event under an agreement worked out with the IOC. With little doubt surrounding the announcement, the cauldron at LA Memorial Coliseum was lit early Wednesday morning.

"This is a momentous day for the people of Los Angeles and the United States. For the first time in a generation, we are bringing the Games back to the City of Angels," said LA Mayor Eric Garcetti. "LA loves the Olympics because the Games have lifted up our city twice before. But to us the Games have always represented an even brighter future and the chance to harness the power of sport and the Olympic Movement again to inspire the next generation - for the next 11 years and beyond."

    (Published Monday, Aug. 7, 2017)

Paris also has been able to plan its celebrations in advance. After the International Olympic Committee confirms the award, Paris officials will unveil a display of the Olympic rings at the Trocadero plaza that overlooks the Eiffel Tower.

Rainy weather, however, has forced the northern Paris suburb of Saint-Denis to move its celebrations indoors. Saint-Denis will host the Olympic Village and other venues in 2024. The town is setting up television screens in a hall, instead, so Saint-Denis residents can watch the IOC meeting in Lima, Peru.

Host cities are typically named seven years in advance, and LA was able to garner numerous financial concessions out of the IOC by agreeing to wait the extra four years. Wednesday's announcement is a formality -- IOC President Thomas Bach is already scheduled to light the Olympic cauldron at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Sunday.

Paris last hosted the games in 1924.

Under the terms of the 2028 host city contract, the IOC would grant $180 million to Los Angeles for an organizing committee and to fund youth sports in the 11 years leading up to the event. The IOC also agreed to waive $50 million in fees and contribute up to $2 billion of its broadcast and sponsorship revenues to the Games, more than the $1.7 billion pledged to Paris for 2024.

"This 11-year agreement with the IOC is the ultimate validation of LA 2028's New Games for a New Era, and Los Angeles' vision for the future," said LA 2028's president, Casey Wasserman. "As a team and as a city, we could not be more excited to be entering into this long-term partnership with the Olympic and Paralympic movements, and with one of the great cities of the world, Paris. This will be an extraordinary collaboration that secures the future of the Movement for generations. Now LA 2028 has a golden opportunity, with four more years to prepare and a $2 billion contribution from the IOC, to redefine how hosting the Games can benefit host communities."

The IOC also agreed to funnel any of its profits from the Games back to the city.

The city's quest to host its third Games has been filled with twists. LA initially competed along with Boston, San Francisco and Washington, D.C., to be the United States' official bid city for the 2024 Games before losing out to Boston in 2015.

But later in the year, Boston dropped out due to growing local opposition and LA jumped in. There have also been protests over LA's bid from members of NOlympics, a group that claims on its website "Olympics destroy communities and kill cities."

The city then entered the contest for 2024 along with Paris, Hamburg, Rome and Budapest, but one by one cities dropped out, leaving only Paris and LA.

Over the summer, the IOC announced its desire to award both the 2024 and 2028 Games at the same time, if LA and Paris agreed. The decision was influenced by the soaring cost of hosting the Olympics and the fact that fewer cities have seemed willing to assume the financial risk.

Tokyo's 2020 plan has already doubled to $12.6 billion, Rio de Janeiro is still struggling to pay off the debt from its $13 billion hosting duties in 2016, and the 2014 Games in Sochi ballooned from a budget of $12 billion to around $50 billion.

With both Los Angeles and Paris submitting bids widely seen as fiscally responsible, the IOC decided to lock them both in to hosting duties. After initial reports indicated that Paris was the favorite to host in 2024, LA leaders indicated they were willing to host in 2028.

LA 2028, the renamed committee leading the city's bid, had proposed a balanced budget of $5.3 billion for 2024 by utilizing existing venues and not building any new permanent structures just for the Games. Although an independent analysis of a budget for 2028 will not likely be completed for months, it is not expected to vary drastically in cost or approach and the LA City Council approved the switch to 2028 in August despite not having a complete picture of the financial aspects of the decision.

Another unknown at the time of the vote was if the California Legislature would approve $250 million to help cover any potential cost overruns. State lawmakers had made the pledge for 2024, but after the switch to 2028 a new bill needed to be drafted. AB 132, which promises $270 million, is currently making its way through the Legislature.

Under the 2024 plan, the city would have covered the first $250 million in cost overruns, the state the next $250 million and the city anything after that. The $5.3 billion balanced budget for 2024 included no money to be spent from the city's general fund as organizers believe they could cover all costs from corporate sponsorships, ticket sales, broadcast rights and the IOC's contribution.

The Coliseum and the new NFL stadium in Inglewood are set to share duties for the opening and closing ceremonies, part of a "something old and something new" approach, as the Coliseum was the site of the ceremonies both in 1932 and 1984. Other venues in the city and nearby like the Staples Center and the Rose Bowl are also planed as sites for events, and the dorms at UCLA are set to be the site of the Olympic Village.

7 Factors to Consider When Moving Your WordPress Site to a New Host

7 Factors to Consider When Moving Your WordPress Site to a New Host

A web software that has acquired immense popularity over the past years, WordPress lets you create amazing websites or blogs with its powerful Content Management System (CMS). It can easily be used to create a WordPress website for personal or professional online presence.

As you maintain your WordPress website by keeping it up-to-date with the changing trends of the online world, you attract high traffic on your site turning it into a successful business. And once you reach this point; your website will require more resources and services to handle the surge in demand and traffic of your site. This is when you need a better WordPress host.

Like many users, you may find transferring your website to another web host quite a daunting task. However, if you follow some simple steps and directions, you can complete the migration process of the website with ease.

Another thing that can make site migration easy is the migration service offered by many WordPress hosts. There are many WordPress Migration tools that ensure a smooth transfer of your WordPress website to a new host. Some of them are All in One WP Plugin, MyEasyBackup, VaultPress, WP Migrate DB Pro among other exclusive migration plugins.

Important things to keep in mind when moving your WordPress website to a new host:

  • Create a Backup of Your Website Files
  • The first step is to create a backup of all the WordPress website files. This may take some time depending on the volume and type of files on your site.

You can either use plugins such as BackupBuddy and UpdraftPlus or do it manually. You can also use free, open source file transfer tools that can help in connecting to the web host and copying backup files from the website's directory to your computer.

It is important to export a database to your computer if you are using a dynamic website that relies on the database. You can perform this step with the help of third-party programs such as phpMyAdmin. This move can ensure proper functioning of your website on the new server.

  • Choose a New Web Host Provider
  • The availability of a good number of web hosting providers often leads to confusion. Therefore, to make the right decision, factors such as price, bandwidth, server location, security, speed, and support team are worth considering.

  • Import New Database and Upload Website Files
  • Another essential step is to establish a new environment to host your website in advance. You can do this by uploading the files to your website using FTP into a public_html directory on your new web hosting account. You can further contact your hosting provider to assist you in this step.

  • Transfer Domain Name (optional)
  • You may need to move your domain name to the new WordPress host if it is registered with your previous web host. Alternatively, you can point your domain name to the nameservers given by the new web host. Contact your new web hosting provider as they can help you sort out any problem related to site migration.

Your emails are managed through the servers of your web hosting company if the domain name is hosted by them. Hence, these emails should also be moved. If the email account is hosted somewhere else, you need to change the DNS settings when the new website is set up.

Also, do not forget to copy all your emails from the old to the new mail before you delete the old email account.

  • Test Website If It Is Setup Correctly
  • When you have completed your file transfer to the new web hosting configuration, the final step is to inspect whether everything is working properly or not. You can use temporary URL in IP numbers to preview your newly hosted WordPress website. To make this final check easy and effective, many web hosting providers may offer a development staging platform where you can see the website before it goes live. This helps you in fixing any issues that can affect your website's quality and performance.

Once you have completed all the tasks in this checklist, you can move on to end your previous web hosting contract and delete all data from it. If you face any trouble or have any doubt during your WordPress website migration, you can always ask your new web host to assist you. This also ensures the quality of their customer support service.

Two Options for Web Content Filtering at the Speed of Now | @CloudExpo #SDN #Cloud #Virtualization

Two Options for Web Content Filtering at the Speed of Now

Because not everything the internet offers is suitable for all users, organizations use web filters to block unwanted content. However, filtering content becomes challenging as networks speeds increase. Two filtering architectures are explored below, along with criteria to help you decide which option is the best fit for your organization.

How Fast Can You Filter? To ensure service level and capacity as internet traffic increases, organizations need higher-speed networks. In telecom networks, to serve hundreds of thousands of users, 100 Gbps network links are introduced to keep up with the demand. Today, the market has reached a state of maturity regarding solutions for web content filtering at 1 Gbps and 10 Gbps, but filtering at 100 Gbps poses a whole set of new challenges.

To filter content this quickly, the system must expend a huge supply of processing power. Furthermore, there is a need for distribution of traffic across available processing resources. This is usually achieved with hash-based 2-tuple or 5-tuple flow distribution on subscriber IP addresses. In telecom core networks, subscriber IP addresses are carried inside GTP tunnels and, consequently, support for GTP is required for efficient load distribution when filtering traffic in telecom core networks.

Building Filtering Capacity There are two choices to meet the needs of high-speed filtering by processing resources and providing load distribution. The first option is a stacked, distributed server solution. It is comprised of a high-end load balancer and standard COTS servers equipped with several 10 Gbps standard NICs. The load balancer connects in-line with the 100 Gbps link and load distributes traffic to 10 Gbps ports on the standard servers. The load balancer must support GTP and flow distribution based on subscriber IP addresses.

Because the load balancer cannot guarantee a100 percent even load distribution, there is a need for overcapacity on the distribution side. A reasonable solution comprises 24 x 10 Gbps links. For this solution, three standard servers, each equipped with four 2 x 10 Gbps standard NICs, in total provide the 240 Gbps traffic capacity (3 x 4 x 2 x 10 Gbps). 24 cables for 10 Gbps links round out the solution.

Though the load balancer is costly, the standard COTS servers and standard NICs offset the expense with their reasonable cost. The solution involves many components and complex cabling. Furthermore, the rack space required is relatively large, and system management is complex due to the multi-chassis design.

The second option consolidates load distribution, 100G network connectivity and the total processing power in a single server. This is called a single, consolidated server solution, and it requires a COTS server and two 1 x 100G Smart NICs. Since up to 200 Gbps traffic needs to be processed within the same server system, the server must be equipped with multiple cores for parallel processing. For example, a server with 48 CPU cores can run up to 96 flow processing threads in parallel using hyper-threading.

To fully use CPU cores, the Smart NIC must support load distribution to as many threads as the server system provides. Also, to ensure balanced use of CPU cores, the Smart NIC must support GTP tunneling. The Smart NIC should also support these features at full throughput and full duplex 100 Gbps traffic load, for any packet size.

This single-server solution has multiple benefits. It provides a one-shop system management, where there are no complex dependencies between multiple chassis. The cabling is simple due to single component usage. The footprint in the server rack is very low, thereby reducing rack space hosting expenses.

Determining Factors The technical specifications for a high-speed web filtering solution are important, but so is the total cost of ownership. Here are some significant parameters for operations expenditure (OPEX) and capital expenditure (CAPEX) calculations. For OPEX, consider rackspace hosting expenses, Warranty and support, and power consumption - including cooling - for servers, NICs and load balancers. CAPEX considerations include the costs of software, servers and Smart NICs or standard NICs.

So, which web content filtering option is right for your organization? It depends on your use case. The difference in costs between the two options will certainly be a determining factor, so consider carefully which method will best serve your needs and those of your customers. If your situation is better served by a simplified, consolidated method, take a closer look at how Smart NICs can provide the support for the speed you need.
