The company has implemented SpamExperts Incoming and Outgoing filters in the Local Cloud and has joined the Hosting Partner Program. The company currently uses the incoming and outgoing filtering solutions on multiple DirectAdmin and cPanel servers. Moreover, they have also implemented SpamExperts software in their custom SATserver sys tem.

"Internet Today needed a robust and professional anti-spam solution to, first of all, help them fight spam but to also add value to their product offering for end-clients. When to host your Website's security

Managing the daily updates and upgrades needed to keep the website secure demands a highly skilled administration team. A third party website management company provides both managed hosting and security, but the security of the site depends largely upon the provider.

Larger enterprises come to website hosting providers because they have regulatory requirements that they can't meet on their own. Commodity providers from AWS to Azure and Rackspace, provide infrastructure, but the enterprise monitors the security of the site themselves.

Self-monitoring with a highly skilled team can be as reliable as entrusting their site to the security team of a web hosting provider, but not every organization has a staff with the expertise and flexibility needed to build a strong security platform program.

Jeff Schilling, CSO, FireHost, said, "The biggest security risk in self-hosting is that they are outward facing toward the threat, and the threat can interact with the website." It takes a very sophisticated security team to successfully self-host a website.

"Open source like WordPress have a lot of vulnerabilities that make it easy to get access and to eventually get into the database," Schilling said. "A security team has to be able to identify the threat presence and have knowledge of security patches."

Because there are zero-day vulnerabilities that no one knows about, enterprises need a security team with the tools and capabilities to detect threats, said Schilling, who also noted that most of the customers that come to them have been compromised through their websites.

"They tried to host on their own, but they've been told they lost company IP, and they realized they can't do it themselves," Schilling said.

The companies who have already been infected require a very sophisticated security team to find the threat. Schilling said, "We are able to find the threat actors who have been on the network for 100+ days."

Schilling also noted the complications of patching different applications that aren't compatible. "In some cases, companies can't patch because it breaks the application that they've written on top of the server," Schilling said.

Schilling advised, "Companies should invest in a web platform that is secure. With platforms like Java exploit, WordPress, or Magenta, they need at least one security person who knows how to keep up." With these open source platforms, the companies have to monitor their websites themselves.

"In most cases it's a full-time job to monitor open source platforms and understand whether they are patched or can be patched," Schilling said. Depending on the size of the organization and the staffing budgets, having their website managed can provide a core intelligence security model that protects customers all the way through the stack, said Shilling.

Most organizations that shift to managed hosting of their websites, Schilling said, "Don't want to be bothered with managing infrastructure. They can manage the content inside applications. The hosting provider delivers the tech labor so that customers can manage their content."

Web hosting providers know the latest versions of updates on a variety of applications, and Schilling said, "They can provide upgrades to the infrastructure without much change to the service. They provide high-speed storage with better performance."

If an organization is considering moving to a hosting provider, Schilling advised, "Make sure the hosting provider stays up to date."

If the right in-house security team is too costly, companies might find that a hosting provider is more affordable and efficient depending on their needs. Schilling said, "A reputable hosting company should have a security team with talent, tools, procedures, antimalware scanning, vulnerability scanning, and a plethora of tools they can leverage to detect threat activity."

For those that are self-hosting, John Bock, vice president of software security, Optiv, said, "There are lots of options for website service providers out there, from lower tiered providers who offer free stuff all the way to full service providers. As you scale up the price, you are paying for more isolation so that breaches are dependent on the security of your own site."

For most companies that are deciding whether to self-host or outsource the website management, cost and security are frequently asked questions. Bock explained, "Aside from the cost of having an internal management team, the hosting provider is more on the ball than you will be with patching."

Because very few if any hosting providers will agree to unlimited liability in a contract, companies need to keep in mind that even if they completely outsource their website development and management, the website is theirs. Their customer information and data will be collected. In the event of a breach, the name of the enterprise, not the hosting provider, will be in the spotlight.

Bock explained, "If you are a health insurance company who builds its own consumer level website that collects a lot of patient data, and that data gets compromised, it's not just damaging to your reputation and brand. There are HIPPA laws and additional disclosures that can result in real penalties."

Organizations need to do a cost-benefit analysis and determine whether the security they can guarantee in-house will surpass that of a managed service provider. Whether having a website fully managed or self-hosting their website, Bock said, "The rules of the game are the same. Keep everything hardened and patches up to date."

When it comes to self-hosting, a security concern for Brad Anderson, CEO, Fruition, a full service digital agency that provides web hosting and website development, is that companies are banking on the hope that they are going to stay under the radar and avoid risk.

Anderson said "One benefit of having a managed website is that an enterprise has a dedicated team of development operations folks who are specialized in firewall." Security and accessibility are two of the most important concerns with websites.

Anderson noted, "Places like Amazon and Azure are largely unmanaged. Self-hosting requires an in-house server administration team and the ability and wherewithal to have access to the hardware 24/7. Most corporate IT teams do not want to deal with this," he continued.

Certainly there is no single reason why companies decide to outsource the management of their websites, but a disastrous event can raise concerns. Noticing a security issue or suspicious behavior is a reason organizations hire external parties to manage their websites, said Anderson. "There has been some security event where they are watching behavior but not quite sure what to do about it," he continued.

"With managed hosting, they have multiple layers of management. There is managed hosting and managed security with WAFs (web application firewalls) and hardware firewalls. Both software WAFs like ModSecurity and hardware firewalls," Anderson said.

When enterprises invest in managed hosting, Anderson said, "Companies are shifting the risk and leveraging the cost of hardware firewalls."

10 Common Mistakes Web Developers Make

This article is part of a web development series from Microsoft. Thank you for supporting the partners who make SitePoint possible.

There seems to be endless choices regarding how to accomplish the same task – to develop a website that works in today's modern web. Web developers have to choose a web hosting platform and underlying data storage, which tools to write HTML, CSS, and JavaScript in, how design will be implemented, and what potential JavaScript libraries/frameworks to include. Once choices are narrowed down, the online world is filled with articles, forums, and samples that provide tips for making a better web experience. Yet no matter which path is taken, all developers are susceptible to mistakes. Although some mistakes will be related to a specific approach, there are challenges shared among all web developers. So through research, experience, and recent observations, I thought I would share a list I compiled of ten common mistakes I see web developers make – and how to avoid them.

The following list is in no particular order.

1) Writing Old School HTML

Mistake : The early days of the internet had much less options for markup than we do today. However, old habits die hard, and many still write their HTML as if we were still in the 20th century. Examples here are using <table> elements for layout, <span> or <div> elements when other semantic-specific tags would be more appropriate, or using tags that are not supported in current HTML standard such as <center> or <font>, or spacing items on a page with a large number of &nbsp; entities.

Impact : Writing last decade's HTML can result in over-complicated markup that will behave inconsistently across multiple browsers. And it's not necessary in more recent modern browsers like Microsoft Edge and even past versions of Internet Explorer (11, 10, 9).

How to avoid : Stop using the <table> element for layout of content, and limit usage for it to displaying tabular data. Get acquainted with the current markup options available such as seen at whatwg.org. Use HTML to describe what the content is, not how it will be displayed. To display your content correctly, use CSS ( http://www.w3.org/Style/CSS/).

2) "It Works in My Browser…"

Mistake : A developer may be fond of a particular browser or really despise one, and might primarily test web pages with that bias in-view. It is also possible that code samples found online may be written without factoring how it would render in other browsers. Also, some browsers have different default values for styles.

Impact : Writing a browser-centric site will likely result in very poor quality when displayed in other browsers.

How to avoid : It would not be practical to test web pages in every browser & version during development. However, having a regular interval of checking how your site will appear in multiple browsers is a good approach. Nowadays free tools to help are readily available regardless of your preferred platform: free VMs, site scanners. Sites such as http://browsershots.org/ or https://www.browserstack.com/show snapshots of how a given page would render over multiple browsers/versions/platforms. Tools such as Visual Studio can also invoke multiple browsers to display a single page you are working on. When designing with CSS, consider "resetting" all the defaults as shown at meyerweb.com.

If your site is using any CSS features created specific for a browser, be cautious as to how you will approach vendor prefixes such as -webkit-, -moz-, or -ms-. For guidance on industry trends in this regard, it would be worth your time to examine the following references:

While the above references explain a movement away from vendor prefixes and why, this site provides practical suggestions on how to work through this today.

3) Bad Form

Mistake : Prompting a user to provide any information (especially when entered into a text field) and assuming the data will be received as intended.

Impact : Many things can (and likely will) go wrong when user entry is trusted. Pages may fail if required data is not provided, or data received is not compatible with an underlying data scheme. Even more serious is the intentional violation of the site's database, perhaps through Injection attacks (see OWASP: Top 10 2013-A1-Injections).

How to avoid : The first bit of advice here is to make sure it is clear to the user what type of data you are looking for. These days, asking for an address could result in either a business, home, or even email address! In addition to be specific, take advantage of data validation techniques available in today's HTML as seen at this article. No matter how data is validated on the browser side, be sure it is always validated on the server-side as well. Never allow a concatenated T-SQL statement to use data from user entry without confirmation the each field is the type of data it should be.

4) Bloated Responses

Mistake : The page is filled with many high quality graphics and/or pictures, scaled down with use of img element height and width attributes. Files linked from the page such as CSS and JavaScript are large. The source HTML markup may also be unnecessarily complex and extensive.

Impact: The time to have a page completely render becomes long enough for some users to give up or even impatiently re-request the whole page again. In some cases, errors will occur if page processing is waiting too long.

How to avoid : Don't adopt the mindset that access to the internet is getting faster and faster – thus allowing for bloated scenarios. Instead, consider everything going back and forth from the browser to your site as a cost. A major offender in page bloat is images. To minimize the cost of images that slow down page loads, try these three tips:

  • Ask yourself: "Are all my graphics absolutely necessary?" If not, remove unneeded images. You can scan your site here for suggestion on which images to compress.
  • Minimize the file size of your images with tools such as Shrink O'Matic or RIOT.
  • Preload images. This will not improve the cost on initial download, but can make other pages on site that use the images load much faster. For tips on this, see this article.
  • Another way to reduce cost is to minify linked CSS and JavaScript files. There are plenty of tools out there to assist in this endeavor such as Minify CSS and Minify JS.

Before we leave this topic, strive to be current with HTML (see mistake #1) and use good judgment when using <style> or <script> tags in HTML.

    5) Creating Code That Should Work

Mistake : Whether it is JavaScript or code running on the server, a developer has tested and confirmed that it works, thereby concluding it should still work once deployed. The code executes without error trapping, because it worked when it was tested by developer.

Impact : Sites without proper error checking may reveal the errors to the end users in an ugly way. Not only can the user experience be dramatically impacted, the type of error message content could provide clues to a hacker as to how to infiltrate a site.

How to avoid : To err is human, so bring that philosophy to coding. With JavaScript, be sure to implement good techniques to prevent errors as well as catch them. Although this article addresses JavaScript coding for Windows Apps, the majority of the topics apply to web development too, and it is full of good tips! Another aid to help create solid code that can hold up well to future changes in code is unit testing (see this Wikipedia article).

Failures in server-side code should be caught without the user seeing any of the nerdy details. Reveal only what is necessary, and be sure to set up friendly error pages for things like HTTP 404s (see this Wikipedia article).

    6) Writing Forking Code

Mistake : With the noble notion of supporting all browsers and versions, a developer creates code to respond to each possible scenario. The code becomes a heap of if statements, forking in all sorts of direction.

Impact : As new versions of browsers update, management of code files become bulky and difficult to manage. And as mentioned in #1, it's increasingly unnecessary.

How to avoid : Implement feature detection in code versus browser/version detection. Feature detection techniques not only dramatically reduce the amount of code, it is much easier to read and manage. Consider using a library such as Modernizr which not only helps with feature detection, it also automatically helps provide fallback support for older browsers not up to speed with HTML5 or CSS3.

    7) Designing Unresponsively

Mistake : Site development assumes viewing in the same size monitor as the developer/designer.

Impact : When viewing the site in mobile devices or very large screens, the user experience suffers with either not being able to see important aspects of the page or even preventing navigation to other pages.

How to avoid : Think responsively. Use responsive design ( Wikipedia) or ( A List Apart article) in your sites. Here are some practical tutorials on it including responsive images. A very popular library ready to serve in this area is Bootstrap.

    8) Making Meaningless Pages

Mistake : Producing public facing pages with content that might be very useful, but not providing any hints to search engines. Accessibility features are not implemented.

Impact : Pages are not as discoverable through search engines and therefore may receive little or no visits. The page content may be very cryptic to users with impaired vision.

How to avoid : Use SEO (search engine optimizations) and support accessibility in HTML. Regarding SEO, be sure to add tags to provide meaning to a page with keywords and description. A good write up on that is found at About Tech. To enable a better accessibility experience, be determined to provide an alt="your image description" attribute in each of your img or area tags. Of course, there is more to do and further suggestions can be investigated at About Tech. You can also test a public web page at Cynthia Says to see if it is compliant with Section 508.

    9) Producing Sites That Are Too Refreshing

Mistake : Creating a site that requires full refreshes of a page for each interaction.

Impact : Similar to bloated pages (see mistake #4), performance of page loading time is affected. The user experience lacks fluidity, and each interaction could cause a brief (or long) resetting of the page.

How to avoid : One quick way to avoid this is by determining if posting back to the server is truly required. For example, client-side script can be used to provide immediate results when there is no dependency for server-side resources. You can also embrace AJAX techniques ( Wikipedia) or go further with a single-page application "SPA" ( Wikipedia) approach. Popular JavaScript libraries/frameworks are available to make adoption of these methods much easier, such as JQuery, KnockoutJS, and AngularJS.

    10) Working Too Much

Mistake : A developer spends a long time creating web content. Time might be spent doing repetitive tasks, or simply typing a lot.

Impact: Time for initial web site launch or subsequent updates is too lengthy. Value of the developer diminishes when it appears other developers are doing comparable work in less time and with less effort. Manual labor is prone to mistakes, and troubleshooting mistakes takes even more time.

How to avoid : Explore your options. Consider using new tools or new process techniques for every stage of development. For example, how does your current code editor compare to Sublime Text or Visual Studio? Regardless of what code editor you are using, have you recently dived into its features? Perhaps a small investment of your time perusing the documentation could unveil a new way to do something that could save hours & hours of time later. For example, note how an extension to Visual Studio can increase productivity for web developers as seen in this post.

Don't miss out on tools available on the web to help! For example, check out the tools at dev.modern.ie to simplify testing (across multiple platforms and devices) and troubleshooting.

You can also help reduce time and mistakes by automating processes. An example of this is using a tool like Grunt that can automate things such as the minifying of files (see mistake #4). Another example is Bower which can help manage libraries/frameworks (see mistake #9).

How about the web server itself? With the help of services such as Microsoft Azure Web Apps, you can quickly create a site for virtually any development scenario that can easily scale with your business!

    Summary

By identifying common mistakes, web developers can eliminate much frustration that others have already endured. Not only is it important to acknowledge, but when we understand the impact of a mistake and take measures to avoid it, we can create a development process catered to our preferences – and do so with confidence!

How To Analyze Traffic (Bandwidth) and Disk Space to Host your Social Media Site

The internet is undoubtedly the busiest street on earth. With thousands of websites and millions of visitors popping up every day, it becomes more complex to manage and maintain a website whose traffic keeps on going with time.

Enter social media and you make it even more complex. Social media site hosting can no longer be done on shared servers because shared hosting is just not the right thing that can scale a web app. Today you may have 100 users using the app, but within a few months, you have no idea on how many zeros will be added behind that number. And it will happen very quickly, which might bring down the entire thing like a house of cards (if you are not prepared for the scale). The impact of hosting a social media site is enormous and it will come from nowhere, not giving you any time for preparation. Before you decide to purchase hosting for your brand new social media site which is about to launch, here are a few things you should take care of.

    1. Choose a hosting provider wisely

You should choose a hosting provider that is right for your business (and not randomly choose a hosting company). This is very important for the long-term success of your website. Specifically, you should consider the following factors before you choose a web hosting provider

  • Will this web host meet your minimum uptime requirements?
  • Will this web host scale with your business?
  • Is this web host reputed and dependable?
  • How many data serving points this company has?
  • Does this company provide real-time technical assistance?
  • Should you go for an expensive dedicated hosting or a virtual private server hosting can meet your demands?
  • What hosting platform you need? Is it Windows or Linux VPS?
  • Does this hosting company provide a smooth transition from one plan to another? So if you get started with shared hosting and want to eventually try a Windows or Linux virtual private server hosting solution, how smooth the transition will be?

These are some, if not all of the factors you should consider before you choose your web hosting company. You can always migrate to another host if things go wrong, but why make the effort of moving from one host to another when a little bit of research will help you time, effort and money?

    2. Analyze Bandwidth of Your Social Media website

The first thing you would want to analyze before you launch your social media website is how much bandwidth your web host can provide you, should you get a spike in traffic. The first thing to note here is visitor metrics. You should calculate the following metrics:

  • How many visitors visit your website every day
  • Number of pages per visit
  • Average page size of all the pages on your website.
  • A typical web page can size anywhere between 30KB to 1MB (depending on the number of embedded images, JavaScript, CSS and other files that the website uses for rendering). On an average one HTML page should not be more than 50 KB in size. So let's say your website gets 1000 visits every day and each user clicks through 5 pages. Your total bandwidth requirement for any given day would be,

    = (1000 X 5 X 50) = 250,000 KB = 250 MB.

What this means is that 250 MB of data is transferred from your web server to the computers of the users who are using your social media site. More the number of users, more will be the bandwidth. So the bandwidth will only rise with time, should your website starts getting big and user engagement increases.

Now that you have figured out the daily bandwidth quota needed for your social media site, it won't be too hard to calculate a monthly bandwidth range. In our example, it should be around 6000 – 10,000 MB.

You can cross check this data in the cPanel of your existing web host. Just take a look at the Bandwidth section and you should see daily and weekly bandwidth trends. Server logs and Awstats will also provide you useful numbers on how much data is being transferred to your users on any given day.

    analyze bandwidth

Before you choose a new web host for your social media website, it would be worthwhile to check with the support team, whether the plan you are taking would support your daily and monthly bandwidth needs. Each hosting plan comes with some bandwidth limitations and you should check this before availing the plan.

If you are choosing a VPS hosting plan to host your social media website, make choice of your VPS hosting provider wisely.Things like uptime management, reliability, technical assistance, caching, billing can get really messy if you choose a provider without doing prior research.

    3.  Analyzing Disk Space

Most web hosting plans come with fixed disk space usage and depending on the plan you subscribe to, your disk space is allocated. But here is an important point to note.

When you choose a web hosting plan on a shared server, the entire disk space is not allocated to your website. Disk space is allocated in batches, depending on the needs of the website. So if your web hosting plan provides you 10GB of disk space and you are using just 200 MB, the initial quota that will be allotted to your website will be around 1GB.

When your usage increases and nears the allotted quota of 1GB, the provider will add more disk space on demand in batches. This is how shared hosting works. Added to this, there are other web host factors to consider before you proceed. If you are hosting your social media website on a shared server, here are a few things you should consider evaluatingThe total file size of the framework which you will be using. Ideally, you would want to download all the files of the framework and see how much file size it takes for the server. Let's take an example to understand.

The total file size of the framework which you will be using. Ideally, you would want to download all the files of the framework and see how much file size it takes for the server. Let's take an example to understand.

Let us suppose you are using Ruby on Rails to create your social media website. The core files of your application would be anywhere around 85 – 100 MB (at most). This won't take up much space at all, but you should check the total size of the web application framework which is powering your website.

If you are using Caching plugins, check the size of your cache.

Keep an approximate count of the number of user uploaded image files on your website. If you have 1000 users, it is possible that your website will have images around 4000-8000. If each image takes up 100KB of space, the total disk usage of the image turns out to be 1 GB.

Are you using your own website to host user-uploaded videos or other file types? Keep an approximate count of these files as well and calculate the file size per user. This will give you some idea of the disk space used by each user on an aggregate, so you will be able to calculate how much disk size you need as you scale up your social media site.

You can get a rough idea about disk space already consumed by your website from your hosting cPanel. Given below is a rough disk usage of a blog with 2000 pages:

    analyze disk

Keep in mind the scale factor. As you scale your social media site, the disk space usage will rise exponentially and you will need to upgrade your disk space very quickly. Otherwise, it is possible that a sudden influx of traffic will crash your entire website down.

Web.com Loses 93,000 Credit Card Numbers in Breach

Update Florida-based web hosting company Web.com on Tuesday announced that it had suffered a data breach and payment card and personal information belonging to 93,000 customers was accessed.

The company did not say in a statement or press release whether the stolen data was encrypted, nor how it was accessed. "All Web.com customer credit card numbers are encrypted," company spokesperson John Herbkersman told Threatpost via email.

The breach was detected Aug. 13 and Web.com said it contacted law enforcement and a security consulting firm to assist with its investigation.

Web.com said it has more than 3.3 million customers and said that it is offering a year of credit monitoring to those affected by the breach; victims were yesterday sent an email from Web.com explaining next steps.

"The security of our customer information is a high priority for Web.com. Our goals are simple – to protect our clients from internet attacks and, in the event that an attack succeeds, to fix the problem immediately," said David L. Brown, chairman, chief executive officer and president of Web.com, in a prepared statement.

Web.com said the vector by which the attackers were able to infiltrate one of its systems was immediately shut down. In addition to credit card numbers, Web.com said the hackers also accessed personal information including names and addresses attached to the payment cards. Card validation, or security codes, as well as Social Security numbers were not compromised, Web.com said.

"Web.com has very strong and sophisticated security measures in place to protect our computer systems and we regularly review and update our security protocols," the company said in a FAQ published on its site. "Unfortunately, cybercrime is a persistent threat in today's world. Despite our best efforts, no business is immune."

Web.com provides an array of hosting services, as well as domain registration, website design, management, search engine optimization and other services.

This Glorious Web-Collage is Made Entirely from Pieces of Old GeoCities Pages

It's Cameron's World now—the rest of us are just living in it.

To wit, Cameron's World is a web-collage and de facto time machine that offers visitors a glimpse into the Internet of old. The project (link at bottom) is an enormous collection of text, GIFs and other visuals culled from thousands of archived GeoCities pages. For those of you too young to remember GeoCities (R.I.P., 1994-2009), here's a history lesson courtesy of Cameron himself:

GeoCities was a web-hosting service that made it possible for people to build their own home pages. During the '90s, users from all over the world created personalized corners of the Internet. By the time the U.S. service shut down in October 2009, there were more than 38 million GeoCities pages. Cameron's World brings together archived material from thousands and thousands of these sites.

As you may imagine, Cameron's World reads like an Internet time capsule with a decidedly surrealist bent, incorporating everything from an animated skull playing a trumpet to the words "Feel free to visit all my cave then tell me what do you like and what not" to a button marked "Steve Buscemi Greetings!" The massive collage is divided into about two dozen distinct sections, which become increasingly bizarre as you scroll. One could easily spend hours sorting through all the insane digital flotsam and jetsam Cameron has aggregated.

Despite the eye-popping, absurd and often hilarious appearance of Cameron's World, the message behind the project is actually quite profound. "In an age where we interact primarily with branded and marketed web content, Cameron's World is a tribute to the lost days of unrefined self-expression on the Internet," Cameron explains in a statement. "This project recalls the visual aesthetics from an era when it was expected that personal spaces would always be under construction."

Cameron (full name: Cameron Askin) is a full-time freelance designer and part-time artist living in Berlin. Today, he is a full-time Internet hero as well. GeoCities, we hardly knew ye.

Experience Cameron's World in all its animated and audio-enhanced glory here.
