Web Hosting Coupons, Discounts, Promo Codes - a Complete List Published by the WordPress Millionaire

You can see Campbell's neatly organized list of web hosting coupons here:

http://thewpmillionaire.com/hosting-coupons/

"I've tried to make it quick and easy for my readers to find the perfect web host for their needs, then save some coin when signing up," he adds.

"I'm pretty blunt in my reviews of these web hosting companies because people deserve the truth," warns Campbell.

"For example, if I buy a cheap shared hosting plan, install a WordPress blog, and the pages take forever to load?  I'll say so.  And I won't even publish a discount for that particular host—they don't deserve new business," he explains.

"Web hosting is such a competitive space, and that's a great thing for us.  You've got nearly unlimited options… so you should be picky.  Why settle for so-so when you could have the best, for the same money?  Or maybe less, thanks to these hosting promotions," says Campbell.

How the Green Data Center Revolution Affects Your Website

Most Internet users think of a website as existing strictly in the virtual world, however, every website requires a hosting computer, and that host computer both uses electricity and produces a lot of heat that must be dissipated.

  • When you pay a web-hosting company to host your site, you are essentially contracting with that business to store your website's coded information on their computers and make it available to everyone in every country around the world, 24 hours a day, 365 day a year. However, your hosting company may store your website's information on its own hard drives or lease storage space from a third party. Of course, the computers the web host owns or rents are not the standard laptops and desktops that most consumers are familiar with. To the contrary, these are typically one of several hundred, or even a few thousand, dedicated hard drives accessed by large banks of servers housed in a data center at an off-site location. This site is often halfway around the world at a location the company may or may not choose to make you aware of.

It is not so much that the data center's location is top secret, as most hosting companies will tell you where their storage facilities are located and even how they operate, in most cases. However, the average website owner or programer tends to not be overly concerned about where their data is being physically stored, provided their website is available to users 24/7.

One very important aspect of data center web hosting that most consumers are not even aware of is if their website's data is being stored too far off site, it can slow down loading times as well as affect "location factoring" in Google's ranking algorithms. These are just a couple of the concerns you should have about where your website data is being stored in the real world. Besides the potential to affect loading times and ranking factors, the type of data center your hosting company uses can also affect both the cost of your hosting and your website's footprint.

Environmental Costs of Web HostingMost Internet users think of a website as existing strictly in the virtual world, however, every website requires a hosting computer, and that host computer both uses electricity and produces a lot of heat that must be dissipated. PayPal et al: When your web site gets kicked in the SaaS

With the proliferation of easy-to-install Web sites and hosting providers, small business owners, nonprofit operators, and even departmental teams inside much bigger organizations are putting up sites and collecting a few bucks.

In fact, you can think of all the Web hosting service providers out there as the original SaaS -- Software-as-a-Service -- providers. As an example, cPanel (the tool the vast majority of Web hosting customers use to manage their sites) was launched a full eight years before Gmail.

Web hosting was SaaS before SaaS was cool.

Lowering the barrier of entry Special Feaure

The Industry Cloud: Why It's Next

Coud computing has engulfed lots of IT, but one of the untapped regions of the tech and business world is the industry cloud, focusing on vertical industries and more specialized applications.

Over the years, the barrier of entry to setting up a basic Web site has gotten lower and lower, and the capabilities and overall look and feel of those Web sites has gotten better and better. Wix promises a Web site that's "Just a click away." Squarespace promises "Perfect Web sites." And the open source WordPress, which lets you host your own Web site and modify it to your heart's content, promises their "famous 5-minute install."

The difference between Wix and Squarespace, and tools like WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal is that the first two are completely hosted solutions and you have very limited opportunity to modify functionality. WordPress, too, has a hosted solution at WordPress.com, and like Wix and Squarespace, you can't modify your sites all that much -- but the company handles everything.

    Content management systems

By contrast, once you get into the world of content management systems or blogging software, which is where WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal fit, you can do everything from a simple 5-minute install to building incredibly deep and complex code and systems.

I got started with WordPress about seven years ago when I migrated the ZATZ sites to WordPress. They ran in another open source environment called UserLand Frontier, but it had been all but abandoned -- and a key piece of code was not open source, but compiled by a company that no longer existed. I wanted to get the ZATZ Archive containing almost 75,000 articles onto a platform that would have a future.

My transition to WordPress was not a 5-minute install. It took three years to write all the code that would replicate my proprietary ZENPRESS content management system and run it in WordPress. Like most platforms of its type, WordPress is extensible and supports plugins. I wrote a bunch of them to replicate the code I had in the original ZENPRESS.

And that's where we start to see the difference between the surface of some of these systems and the depth underneath the water. It used to be that to install a plugin, you had to FTP into a server, upload the files, and move them into the right directories. Heck, it used to be that to install WordPress, you had to do the same thing.

Now, most hosting users just click on Softaculous (or something similar) and the magic happens behind the scenes. Many hosting providers sell WordPress hosting accounts that are all set up without any configuration required.

The impact of this has not been inconsiderable. WordPress currently powers 26.2 percent of all Web sites. Of those using any sort of content management system, WordPress has 59.2 percent of the market.

In other words, it's a fair bet to assume that if someone is building a Web site, especially one where they're not hand-coding the HTML, the odds are they're building it in WordPress.

    It's not IT, it's point-and-click

But "building it" is a stretch. Back before I adopted a bunch of unattended WordPress plugins, I thought those "building" WordPress had some technical skills. As I've come to find out, because the barrier of entry is so low, sites are being pointed-and-clicked into existence, and the operators who are making and relying on them often have pretty much zero technical knowledge.

You know how it is when you go to Thanksgiving dinner and the whole family has been looking forward to seeing you? Yeah, you know it's not because they love your personality. They want to get their gear fixed, and they know it's probably one of only two or three times during the year that you're making a house call.

Yep, most WordPress site operators are like your family. Most have no idea what CSS is. An inspector to them is French and bumbles around solving crimes. They wouldn't know how to set up iptables or edit Apache or Nginx configuration files, or heaven forbid, install an SSL certificate and update their Web site to route https requests properly.

Remember that last one. We'll come back to it in a few minutes.

    The plumbing underneath

But despite their lack of mad IT skills, make no mistake about it. These folks are engaged in some pretty complex IT. They're building mashups, linking their sites to other SaaS service providers, and relying on data interconnections that they can't even describe.

They're sending mailing list data into MailChimp. They're posting tweets automatically to Twitter. They're latching into Google Analytics and Adwords for analytics and some side income. And they're using e-commerce providers and payment gateways to bring in cash.

All of this is horrifyingly fragile, dependent on protocols and interconnects between vendors that often don't even talk to each other.

    A rant for the ages

One of the best examples of this fragility comes via a post-rant by Maciej Ceglowski, the creator of Pinboard. Not to be confused with Pinterest, Pinboard is kind of a next-generation Delicious, a bookmarking site of sorts. As social networking sites go, Pinboard isn't huge. But it's still got tens of thousands of users.

Pinboard is SaaS and many of Pinboard's users connect to other SaaS services using IFTTT, literally If-this-then-that. IFTTT is plumbing that reacts to events on some services and triggers events on others. It's glue -- but it's glue that needs ingredients in the form of some communications protocols that connect the services.

Apparently, out of the blue, IFTTT changed its protocol and then sent a demanding letter to Ceglowski, threatening him if he didn't make Pinboard compatible. His rant is priceless.

The point of this is that we're all more and more reliant on not just the SaaS services we are consciously signing into, but also on the hidden plumbing that connects these services. Oddly enough, it mostly works, even though most of the players don't know each other, and sometimes compete.

I'll paint you a picture. Have you ever blasted down a long stretch of highway, where the only thing between you and the cars going in the other direction was a thin yellow line? You don't know them and they don't know you, but everyone agrees to generally stay in their lanes. It shouldn't work, but it does.

That's our world of SaaS and interoperability.

    PayPal and security

Not everyone gets into a newly classic snit like Pinboard's creator, but many companies that provide key services do struggle with the compatibility issue. And that brings us to PayPal.

I have a better insight into this than I might otherwise have had because one of the plugins I adopted a year ago turns out to connect to PayPal.

Okay. That's kind of an understatement. Seamless Donations is all about collecting donations for nonprofits and processing those donations through PayPal. This is no small thing. Seamless Donations is the most popular donations plugin for WordPress. More than 4,000 people downloaded it just last week.

Seamless Donations is small potatoes, though, compared to the big WordPress e-commerce systems, like Easy Digital Downloads and WooCommerce. WooCommerce, for example, is a WordPress plugin that runs nearly 30 percent of the entire Web's ecommerce sites. There's huge value in that. Automattic, the company behind WordPress, bought WooThemes (the company behind WooCommerce) for something in the neighborhood of $30 million.

    Links in a chain

As you probably know, collecting money online is a multi-vendor proposition. The donation sites and e-commerce sites don't process the money. That's usually done through gateway systems that talk to the big credit card processing financial systems.

There are usually a bunch of links in the chain from the e-commerce site to the shopping cart software to the payment gateway to the credit card provider to the bank. Those linkages, all the "to the" items I mentioned in the previous sentence, are very attractive targets to hackers, organized crime, terrorist organizations, and rogue nation states.

In other words, on one end of the system you have Uncle Ralph who wants to sell baseball cards and at the other side, you have Kim Jung Un, who would really, really wants to drop a nuke on all of us, including Uncle Ralph.

Since Kim either hasn't been allowed to play with the big-boy toys (or they never seem to work), North Korea's leader has had to settle for ordering teams of hackers to break into not just corporate sites to steal money and secrets, but sites operated by folks like Uncle Ralph.

To be honest, most e-commerce solutions and gateways give me the willies, because they actually take credit card information in on public Web sites and then transmit that information to processors. Yes, those sites have to be secured with SSL, but as we've seen, SSL has its weaknesses.

SSL also adds complexity to Web site operations, requiring certificate requests, certificates, more options in conf files, and some expense. Up until recently, validated SSL certificates were rather costly. That's changing, which is good for the nonprofits I work with.

But PayPal has been different. First, it was one of the very first online monetary transaction processors, so it had quite a lot of first mover advantage. Its services have grown up over the years, but at its very basic, PayPal still offers a chunk of HTML you can paste into your page and get a Buy button.

One slight step up is building a form on your Web page that redirects the user to PayPal's servers to get account and financial information. This code has a number of benefits. It's relatively easy to set up, it's free (except for the percentage points PayPal skims off the top), and all the confidential information never lives on the original site.

For many getting into online commerce, that was the winner. Not only didn't they have to worry about storing confidential financial information, they also didn't have to know from SSL or complex security protocols.

That made the barrier of entry to collecting money about as easy as clicking a button. And so, almost all of the e-commerce solutions and donation solutions (mine included) provided PayPal as the entry point for e-commerce.

    The coming PayPal-mageddon

But the folks at PayPal aren't stupid. They know that even though no real confidential information travels from originating sites to their servers, it's only a matter of time before the bad guys break something. So for the past year or so, PayPal has been warning of a transition to SSL.

Part of that transition hit users last week. Suddenly, it was impossible to use the sandbox without an https-based URL. Sandboxes are test environments most e-commerce providers set up so users can test their carts before going live.

    special feature

How To Make IT More Agile

Business executives are increasingly moving to an IT environment that is no longer focused on big, long projects but shorter, more sustainable efforts to drive change and innovation. Here are the pros and cons, and how to make it happen.

While PayPal had been warning of the move, their guidance page said "Ready now" not "You better be ready now." A reading of the fine print does show that PayPal intended this transition to shut off non-SSL use of their sandbox, but it was fine print -- not the big block of warning for their next step, what I've taken to calling PayPal-mageddon.

That's in September. On September 30, 2016, PayPal will stop accepting Internet payment notifications from live sites that are not using SSL. From a security point of view, this is a good thing. But from an all-hell's-gonna-break-loose point of view, oh my.

In September, anyone using PayPal who hasn't transitioned to the new security protocols will no longer be able to take money. Period. Money won't change hands. For those who haven't updated their sites, the flow of money will come to a screeching halt. This may affect a large percentage of the Internet.

I'll use Seamless Donations as an example. When I adopted it, it was at version 3.x. I did a pile of mods and moved it up to 4.x. As of now, 77.2 percent are running one of 15 4.0.x releases. But that means that 22.8 percent haven't upgraded and probably haven't paid any attention to the operation of the site, except for letting the donations flow into their accounts.

For just my plugin alone, we're talking about thousands of active sites, all of whom will stop seeing donations process on September 30. And who do you think they're going to yell at? It won't be PayPal, at least at first. It will be me and all the others who provide a PayPal gateway.

    DIY-IT Project Guide

Updated: If you're working on a DIY project of your own, this comprehensive guide to tech projects is a good place to start.

Please dont take this as general bitching. Instead, take away the lesson that SaaS is somewhat fragile, especially as we start to take into account the fact that SaaS isn't really one thing, but a lot of services all interconnected in unique mashups.

We also need to take into account that our users most likely haven't thought this all through, or don't even have a concept of what's going on in the IT operations they've snapped together out of virtual Internet-based Lego blocks.

As we move more and more to the cloud, we become more and more reliant on Web-based SaaS services. Sure, it frees us up from hardware infrastructure, software maintenance, and even basic operational knowledge. But as SaaS services change their interfaces and their policies, or just shut down, expect breakage.

The big difference this time is that as IT systems fail, end-user managers will be on the front lines. The IT pros will get called in, of course, but not until things get very ugly and unsuspecting users/operators get very angry.

Hey, we in IT have always picked up the pieces. Why should this phase of user-managed mashups be any different?

By the way, I'm doing more updates on Twitter and Facebook than ever before. Be sure to follow me on Twitter at @DavidGewirtz and on Facebook at Facebook.com/DavidGewirtz.

WP.land Reinvents Web Hosting with Automated WordPress Creation Platform

Houston Based WP.land, Which Has Been Operating in Stealth Mode For The Previous 9 Months, Official Launches WordPress Hosting & Creation Platform Today

Houston, TX (PRWEB) March 28, 2016

WP.land, an automated website creation platform, which has been in stealth mode for the previous 9 months, has officially launched to allow users to easily create scalable websites.

"I've been in various parts of the web hosting industry for over 16 years and are still shocked with how complicated it is for a typical consumer to actually get a simple website setup, WP.land solves this problem in a big way." says Rodney Giles, CEO of WP.land

Giles is a web hosting industry veteran who previously built and sold Eleven2.com and later took over as President at NetDepot.com several years after the sale of Eleven2.

WP.land's proprietary, custom platform allows a user to signup and get a WordPress website online in less than 5 minutes. WordPress is the leading open-source content management software, which powers over ¼ of the entire Internet. WP.land gets rid of the technical aspect to setting up a website without having to deal with acronyms such as FTP, POP, IMAP, SMTP & DNS. WP.land has finally put the puzzle together into a single unified platform. WP.land officially reinvents WordPress hosting today.

Giles goes on to say: "Our goals are very ambitious this year, we believe our platform is unique in the ease of use and we are certain our users will see that."

MSPs Take Note: The Cloud War Is Still Ongoing | @CloudExpo #Cloud

The market for cloud computing continues to grow and defy all expectations. Startups are starting to slow down, but the big three - Amazon, Microsoft and Google - reported excellent earnings last quarter. Who exactly are "The Big Three"? Who are the others? What do MSPs need to know in order to take advantage of, and succeed in, the Cloud Wars?

    Who Are The Players?

Amazon Web Services was an early entrant in the public cloud market, which allowed it to dominate the space. As Gartner stated in its Magic quadrant, AWS's customer base is diverse and covers a broad range of use cases, including enterprise and mission critical applications. It is currently the market leader and has over 10 times more compute capacity in use than that of all the 14 other providers combined.

Microsoft Azure is the second biggest by market share, and it integrated its' IaaS and PaaS components. Microsoft has been rapidly rolling out new features and services. Its' infrastructure and platform not only offers world-class IT frameworks, but also works well with Microsoft's on-premise solutions and development tools. Microsoft's Azure is also an early entrant into new spaces such as Internet of Things.

Google Cloud Platform is the third largest IaaS, and it allows organizations to "run like Google" by exposing Google's highly innovative technologies to developers and service providers, who can then create their own products and services. Although Google is a late entrant to the IaaS market, it is utilizing its' powerful capabilities and has been gaining momentum.

VMware vCloud Air, the market leader in virtualization technologies, announced vCloud Air in 2008, but it wasn't completed until years later. vCloud Air is an IaaS platform built on VMware's vSphere technology, and its original products included Direct Connect, DRaaS, CloudFoundry PaaS and VMWare View. VMware recently announced a strategic partnership with IBM in order to enable its' enterprise customers to take advantage of IBM's cloud services. Early last year, it announced a similar partnership with Google to bring its enterprise customers access to Google's public cloud services.

IBM SoftLayer, was acquired by IBM in July 2013, prior to which SoftLayer was an independent hosting provider, with a focus on small and mid-size businesses. Now IBM SoftLayer offers dedicated servers, managed hosting and cloud computing. IBM's PaaS BlueMix (built on CloudFoundry) hosts in SoftLayer's data centers. SoftLayer has OpenStack based object storage with an integrated CDN via a partnership with EdgeCast.

Big Three Analyzed – An MSP Perspective:Price wars amongst AWS, Azure and Google Cloud have been on-going and are expected to continue. The "Big Three" (Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform) have carved up the market, and MSPs should think carefully before making recommendations that customers move to a particular public cloud. Though customer "lock-in" could be considered low to medium (depending on which services are used), moving from one provider to another is still a time consuming, costly and arduous task.

Here is how the Big Three break down.

Amazon Web Services – earliest to the game, created the public cloud market. Its most developer-friendly, and has an ecosystem of startups and more mature companies who have built systems for many things AWS offers - from the ability to create your own virtual datacenters using CloudFormation, to geo-redundant DNS services using Route53. AWS is not known to be channel friendly, though with consolidated billing and its' Reseller program, it's certainly possible to work with.

Microsoft Azure – Microsoft has made advances in the PaaS space, and made it easy for developers to bypass MSPs and system admins, and run code directly on their Web Apps platform. Microsoft has also been releasing innovative products on Azure – things like IoT Hub, Logic Apps, and Azure File Storage. Microsoft is also bringing the ability for customers to run their own cloud in their datacenter using Azure Stack. Azure will be the best fit for those that run on a Microsoft stack, and who prefer a hybrid-cloud approach. From a service provider perspective, Microsoft has and will continue to be channel-focused, will provide strong incentives to sell Azure (but will also provide strong incentives to mid-market and enterprise customers to buy direct via its various licensing programs), and with its' Cloud Service Provider program, it's the most channel friendly Big Three cloud vendor.

Google Cloud – Google is a newer entrant to the game, and it remains to be seen where its' best fit is. It has certainly showed its' ability to be price competitive, beating out AWS by as much as 50% on some of its' products. We think Google will work hard to build a suite of developer-friendly tools, but it will not leave partners behind – the channel has been a driving force in speeding up adoption of Google Apps for Business, and I am certain the smart folks at Google will do everything they can to continue to work with service providers.

Amazon.com says review finds women get equal pay at company

GoDaddyThe website-hosting company found previous year in an internal audit that its female employees are paid $1.01 for every dollar a male employee makes.

"Diversity increasingly is falling into the spotlight", Roe said. Fostering gender diverse teams leads to more innovative better performing companies.

PayScale's report, Inside the Gender Pay Gap, shows a smaller gender pay gap in tech than in any other industry - except at the executive level, where the controlled gender pay gap is 5.6 percent, meaning that women earn 94.4 cents for every dollar a man earns, comparing only like job titles and similar work experience and education. Women in the U.S. make $0.78 on average for every dollar earned by men, according to the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates.

Lamb further stated that so far, Amazon is the only tech company that has responded directly to the shareholder's proposal.

Among the companies Arjuna targeted this year, only Amazon.com Inc. tried to fight the proposal, Lamb said.

Initially, Amazon wanted to prevent a proposal brought forward by Arjuna Capital and Pax World Funds that would require the company to disclose the information regarding gender pay equality. The SEC said it disagreed with Amazon's findings.

In its survey, which included its entire US staff including thousands of warehouse workers, Amazon found that women's compensation in 2015 was 99.9% of men's in equivalent jobs.

With the disclosure, Arjuna Capital is withdrawing its resolution, said Natasha Lamb, Arjuna's director of equity research and shareholder engagement. "Before providing your information to the EEOC, you're going to take a look and try to correct any problems", she says. Arjuna is in the process of withdrawing its proposal. A Glassdoor study this week found that gender pay gaps still exist worldwide, even though they shrink considerably when factoring in age, education and years of experience.

While Trillium targeted two financial-services companies, Citigroup and American Express Inc., Arjuna focused on technology firms because the sector is known for its "egregious diversity numbers and boys' club atmosphere", Lamb said.

Less than a week after regulators rejected Amazon's request that it not have to submit a gender pay resolution to a shareholder vote at its annual meeting in June, the online retailer has done an about-face. Its proxy documents call such a report "costly and time-consuming", which "in light of our many efforts in this area, would not offer shareholders meaningful additional information".

CrowdReviews.com Urges Web Hosting Buyers to Select Reviewed Hosting Companies

SANTA FE, NM --(Marketwired - March 26, 2016) -  CrowdReviews.com, a provider of web hosting reviews and ratings, has released a statement urging those looking for web hosting solutions to select web hosting companies which have been reviewed by ample reviewers. With the website hosting industry growing in number of providers it will become increasingly important to select a web hosting company that has a lot of reviews written by actual customers out there. Some websites may not present a factual representation of how customers feel about a web hosting company's customer service, uptime, or other aspects of the hosting experience. CrowdReviews.com offers a web hosting rankings platform based on user reviews.

Before making the decision on which web hosting service to use, CrowdReviews.com urges those search for web hosting solutions to utilize online reviews and ratings as a means of identifying potential hosting companies. Since web hosting companies often differ in how they handle customer information, support, and maintenance, it is important to find a web hosting company that operates as your business would expect. If possible, connecting with a web hosting provider prior to signing up for service can reveal not only their level of professionalism, but can ensure that their services match up to expectations.

CrowdReviews.com provides rankings of the best web hosting companies based on a transparent algorithm which favors customer reviews above all other factors. Web hosting companies are invited to become a part of the rankings by creating or claiming their profile and inviting their customers to speak for them. Both satisfied and dissatisfied web hosting customers are urged to voice their opinions on the quality of the service provided to them.

Due to popular demand, Snoop Dogg is now hosting his own nature series ‘Planet Snoop’

This is how the works works these days: You go on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" and narrate some funny animal videos in a segment called Plizzanet Earth with Snoop Dogg, the internet loves it and creates a petition for you to narrate an entire season of the popular nature series "Planet Earth" (it gets more than 65,000 signatures), and then you decide to create your own animal video web series on Merry Jane, a cannabis and culture site.

At least that's how it works if you're Snoop Dogg and you're starting a series called "Planet Snoop," which launched on Thursday with a video of a squirrel fighting a snake.

At the beginning of the video Snoop thinks out loud "this is an easy win for the snake," but after the snake fails to properly fight back and the squirrel gets all…squirrely…he decides if the little guy can "bust a nut, you know he can bust a snake head open, no problem."

Merry Jane calls Snoop "everyone's favorite nature-documentary narrator," a title esteemed filmmaker and naturalist David Attenborough—narrator of the Emmy Award-winning BBC nature series "Planet Earth"—might take issue with.

However, Snoop is highly entertaining (at least in 2-minute spurts) and Attenborough must be used to armchair environmentalists getting carried away with the often stunning and mesmerizing content of his programs…not to mention the added cerebral enhancements provided by any nearby bongs, vaporizers, edibles, joints, or however else people get stoned these days.

If there is one complaint, it's that the first episode uses a laugh track (which may be part of the original video Snoop's narrating over). Either way it's unnecessary and distracting. We can already hear the other voices laughing inside our heads.

CrowdReviews.com Announces Guide for Selecting Web Hosting Companies

SANTA FE, NM --(Marketwired - March 25, 2016) - --(Marketwired - March 25) - CrowdReviews.com, a platform for reviewing and ranking online services, has released a set of tips assisting those searching for reputable web hosting services. The tips outline helpful steps buyers can take to identify effective web hosting solutions based on the experiences of other buyers. While the tips can help reduce the risk of dissatisfaction, they are not a guaranteed set of guidelines to find the perfect web hosting company.

CrowdReviews.com recommends that buyers consider web hosting companies which have ample reviews written about them regarding the quality of their service, their customer service, and the plans they offer. With thousands of companies offering web hosting services it will become increasingly important to perform research prior to signing up for a web hosting plan. Buyers are encouraged to find sources for reviews and information produced by buyers and those not representing the web hosting companies themselves. CrowdReviews.com provides reviews on vendor profiles with the distinction on whether the review is written by a customer, employee, competitor, or an anonymous user.

It is also recommended for buyers to better identify their needs and objectives with web hosting services and to compare different offerings based on the software they make available, the level of hosting being provided, and information about the hosting environment. Not every web hosting company offers the same level of support or the same specifications for the hosting environment. It is important to understand what a website needs and whether the web hosting company is able to meet those requirements.

Hosting Easter brunch? Set the perfect table so your guests are “hoppy”

Please enable Javascript to watch this video

MILWAUKEE -- Are you in charge of hosting Easter brunch? Bjorn Chinander, a home designer with Sendik's Food Market, joined the Studio A team with some decor to make you and your guests "hoppy."

About Sendik's Food Market (from website)

After immigrating to Milwaukee from Sant'Elia, Sicily, the Balistreri family began peddling quality fruits and vegetables by horse-drawn wagon. This began on the northeast side of Milwaukee, and eventually led to the opening of produce markets on Oakland and Downer avenues. In 1949, Grandpa Tom Balistreri — simply and affectionately known at Sendik's as Mr. B — opened a third Sendik's fruit and vegetable market on the corner of Silver Spring and Lake drives in the heart of Whitefish Bay. The store became known for honesty and integrity in treating customers and suppliers with courtesy and respect.

How to Migrate a WordPress Site to a New Domain and Hosting

Moving your WordPress site to a new host can be a bit stressful. If it's not done properly, it can result in some annoying and unexpected errors. However, if it's handled correctly, it should be a stress free experience.

In this tutorial, I'll demonstrate how to migrate a WordPress site to a new host and domain name, avoiding many of the common problems experienced with migrations.

Note: There are many ways to approach a migration, in this tutorial I'll be introducing you to a manual approach. It's not always the easiest option, but once you understand how it works, you'll be better equipped to tackle any problems you come across when moving sites.

    Deactivate All Plugins

Before you begin, I'd recommend that you deactivate all plugins because, when moving a WordPress site to a new host, the things that are likely to fail are your WordPress plugins. WordPress itself is well designed to adapt to new changes, but the plugins might not be.

Therefore, to deactivate all activated plugins, go to the admin page -> Plugins -> Installed Plugins -> Mark all -> Bulk action -> Deactivate -> Apply

    Deactivating Plugins

Backing up WordPress Database and Files

It's best practice to always backup your website before making any changes, and a WordPress migration is no exception. There are a couple of WordPress plugins for doing this, but a manual approach is best if you want to be in complete control of the process.

Now, I'll show you how to backup your WordPress files and database with a manual approach, and also via a plugin.

    Backing up Manually

To back up your WordPress database manually: Log in to your phpMyAdmin, click on your WordPress database and select Export as shown in the image below.

    Export Database

Ensure that you're exporting in SQL Format and click Go. Your WordPress database will then be downloaded as a .sql file. I recommend that you save the downloaded SQL file to a special folder on your computer so that you can easily locate it later. You can also use the command line to export a copy of your database, you can find more information on that here.

To backup your files manually: I would recommend that you download your complete WordPress installation folder so that you won't lose anything.

Using any FTP/SFTP client like FileZilla, log in to your host by FTP/SFTP and download your htdocs or public_html folder (or anywhere your WordPress installation resides).

    Backing up with a Plugin

Download and install the UpdraftsPlus Backup and Restoration plugin. At the Installed Plugins page, locate the UpdraftsPlus plugin and activate it.

Once you have the plugin installed, at the admin page, go to Settings -> UpdraftsPlus Backups, and then click the Backup.

    Updraft Plus

This might take a while depending on the size of your WordPress site, but once the process has been completed, click on the Exisiting Backups tab to download the backup to your computer and then you can move it to a special folder too.

    Preparing Your Backup for Upload

Now that we have the backup, we need to modify a few things before we can move on to uploading our backup(s). Before proceeding, log in to phpMyAdmin of your new host and create a new database. Note down the name of the database, as you will be needing it later in this tutorial.

    Updating the wp-config.php file

There is some information to be modified in our WordPress configuration file before moving on. Extract the ZIP archive of the WordPress installation folder you downloaded earlier, locate the wp-config.php file and open it for editing using your favorite text editor such as Notepad and Notepad++.

Edit the lines below, replace with the details of your new host and save.

    define('DB_NAME', 'replace_with_database_name_you_noted_down'); /** MySQL database username */ define('DB_USER', 'replace_with_new_host_mysql_user_name'); /** MySQL database password */ define('DB_PASSWORD', 'replace_with_new_host_mysql_password'); /** MySQL hostname */ define('DB_HOST', 'replace_with_new_mysql_host'); Uploading Your Backup

We're almost done. The next action to take is to upload your modified WordPress installation folder to the new host via FTP/SFTP.

After uploading is completed, proceed to upload your database backup.

To upload the database backup, log in to your phpMyAdmin in your new host and click the Import menu as shown below.

    Import

Select the SQL database backup and upload.

Updating the WordPress Home URL and Site URL

There are several ways to set your URL for WordPress, we'll discuss a few common methods.

If you're moving to a new domain too, ensure you have successfully pointed your new domain to your hosting account (refer to your hosting support documentation for the exact details).

    Using wp-config.php

You can set your URLs by adding the following lines to wp-config.php, this overrides and will disable these options in the WordPress dashboard.

    define('WP_HOME','http://example.com'); define('WP_SITEURL','http://example.com');

The WordPress Codex has a good explanation of this.

Using a WordPress Theme functions.php File

Paste the below lines in your active theme's functions.php file immediately after the initial < ?php line, using the editor provided by an online FTP/SFTP client, or your preferred text editor.

    update_option ( 'siteurl', 'http://your_new_domain_name.com' ); update_option ( 'home', 'http://your_new_domain_name.com' );

Replace the http://your_new_domain_name.com with your new domain URL. The above code will automatically update the siteurl home option names with your new blog URL in the database. Visit your WordPress login or admin page and your site should work.

Once your site is back up, ensure that you delete the lines you added to your theme's function.php file to prevent the updating each time your site is viewed.

Manually Updating the WordPress Home URL and Site URL

To manually update your WordPress Home URL and Site URL, login back to your phpMyAdmin, open your WordPress database, click on the wp_options table and modify the values of the site_url and home column with your new URL.

    Browse

Reactivating All Plugins and Updating Permalinks

Now that everything is working fine, go ahead and activate your necessary plugins. To do that, navigate to Plugins -> installed plugins, select activate from the Bulk action drop down and hit the Apply button.

To update your permalinks, go to Settings -> Permalinks, select your desired permalinks structure and Save Changes.

    301 Redirection Setup

To transfer your old domains SEO juice (or SEO value) to the new one, it's important that you set up a 301 redirect as follows.

Open the .htaccess file in your old WordPress install folder and append the rewrite rules below so that anyone visiting your site using your old domain URL will be redirected to the new domain.

    <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST}^olddomain.com$ [OR] RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST}^www.olddomain.com$ RewriteRule (.*)$ http://www.newdomain.com/$1 [R=301, L] </IfModule> Some Useful Tips

php.ini and .htaccess filesThese files can contain settings that only work with your previous hosting, so if things don't work, check these files first. Try renaming or commenting out various lines, and look for hard coded paths that might not exist on your new environment.

Caching PluginsSome caching plugins will modify your .htaccess or create files to absolute paths that might not exist on your new hosting setup.

Google reCaptcha PluginIn case you have any Google reCaptcha plugins installed, you should remember to get a new API key for your new domain, so that the plugin won't find it difficult to display the reCaptcha.

Jetpack PluginAlso, if you have the Jetpack plugin installed, you should remember to re-connect your WordPress site to WordPress.com because you've moved to a new domain.

Genesis Club Lite Display ModuleIf you have the Genesis Club Lite plugin installed, and the display module is activated, you should remember to change the domain part of your URL from the old domain to the new one. This is done at Genesis Club Lite -> Display -> Logo effect the change and save the changes.

    Conclusion

In this tutorial, I walked through how to move a WordPress site to a new host and how to change a domain name associated with it if you need to. If you've used absolute URLs in your content, you'll need to update these too. Many plugins also need to be updated, but hopefully this points you in the right direction.

Before you start any site migration, I'd highly recommend reading the WordPress Codex for even more details on the various processes.

If you have any questions or suggestions please let us know in the comments below, it's a broad topic so I'd love to hear your feedback and ideas on your own approach.

Virgin Media Moves Customers to GoDaddy as it Shuts Down Hosting Service

Virgin Media is closing down its cloud storage, hosting, and mobile roaming-charge saving apps as of Apr. 28, the company quietly announced earlier this month. Virgin has worked out a deal with GoDaddy for customers of its Webspace hosting service, giving them a year of free hosting, according to the announcement.

Users of the three services will receive snail-mail notification of the closures. The services are being closed due to Virgin's customers "choosing to use alternative apps and services."

The company is referring customers of storage app Virgin Media Cloud to Dropbox, as the evidence rolls in that not every company theoretically capable of offering cloud storage should do so. In the last few years cloud storage services have been closed by Barracuda Networks, Wuala, Canonical, AVG, and Nirvanix, and very nearly Bitcasa.

Dropbox, by contrast, has grown so much that it is largely moving from AWS to its own infrastructure. Virgin is suggesting its storage customers migrate to Dropbox, and offering to help them do so.

Read more: GoDaddy Launches Cloud Servers and Bitnami-Powered Cloud Apps Worldwide

Webspace customers will receive a code in the letter they get in the post, which grants them 12 months of hosting, use of the website builder, a domain name, and email from GoDaddy. The announcement touts GoDaddy's 1 GB of storage as superior to Webspace, and said customers can expect to save nearly £60 (about $85).

SmartCall is a bundle-utilization service allowing customers to allocate mobile calls to their land-line plan, saving roaming charges and limited minutes. Virgin has declined to renew its contract with the technology partner for the service.

The closures reflect the increase in competition among service providers, but also demonstrate a reasonable public relations effort by a consumer-facing company.

GoDaddy Now Added Cloud Services to Its Hosting Platform

godaddyGoDaddy, the famous website hosting service and domain signing company, went public in 2015 and now is including cloud services. These are intended to grow the earnings it has from 14 million companies that represent the bulk of its consumer platform.

This week, it has revealed the new Cloud Cloud Applications and Cloud Servers, which are Amazon-style options that will allow firms to create, test and range cloud alternatives on GoDaddy's system facilities. It is worth noting that, even those functions are rather Amazon-style options, GoDaddy considers that it is occupying a segment where AWS are not actually performing so well nowadays.

This is represented by business owners that want cloud solutions supplementing a broader activity, which might not be solved by the cloud. This is another method to reach the same result, said GoDaddy's representatives about the dimensions and viewers that AWS mostly targets.

They are really about allowing smaller companies to be created and developed and they have a certain period to cover on GoDaddy's until transforming these firms into dedicated information centers. It is not an unexpected move for GoDaddy though, since the web hosting business has been developing its systems in could solutions for some time.

Lately, it purchased the public client branch of Apptix after it released GoDaddy Pro. This is a network that also offers customers the choice of utilizing GoDaddy's service for multiple SaaS pursuits such as WordPress hosts, running exclusive private solutions and now included with that cloud web servers and applications.

GoDaddy's strategy to release cloud web servers and applications arrives at an exciting time of improved competitors among Amazon or other suppliers. On an advanced level, Amazon's AWS activity has mostly taken over the marketplace for organizations that are developing and implementing applications in could systems, hosting some of Internet's major businesses as clients.

Lately, there has been a series of high-profile ideas, like Dropbox controlling even more their own services, Spotify joining its forces with Google or Apple allegedly expanding third-party software that it uses for cloud services.

According to many reports, modifications like those will unlikely have long-lasting effects on AWS's main business. However, they emphasize the high level of competition in the industry and how a company interested in adding more activities in this segment can find numerous chances to do so. For GoDaddy, this meant developing relatively easily and freelancing some elements of the system.

Symantec Corp. has announced the worldwide availability of Encryption Everywhere, a website security package available through web hosting providers. Encryption Everywhere lets web hosting providers integrate encryption into every website from the moment it is created. With the new web security service, hosting providers can offer a variety of flexible options, including basic website encryption included as part of any hosted service, and a number of premium security packages with increasingly stronger levels of website validation, protection, and trust seals. Symantec wants to see 100% of legitimate websites secured by 2018, and Encryption Everywhere was developed to support that goal.

According to the Norton Cybersecurity Insights Report, 47% of global respondents reported they have been a victim of a cyberattack. Symantec's Internet Security Threat Report cited five out of six large companies had been targeted for attack in 2014, a 40% increase over the previous year. In addition, Google and other browsers have announced they will push unencrypted websites down in search ranking results. Websites that want to remain viable will need to at least use basic encryption by 2018. Encryption Everywhere encrypts 100% of customer data shared on a business's website, giving businesses of any size precious brand trust and providing consumers with the confidence that the information they share is protected and will reach the intended recipient.

Encryption Everywhere makes it easy to secure any website from the time it's registered or renewed. Many web hosting providers will integrate basic encryption with every website. For more customized options, the user can simply click on the preferred Symantec security products offered by their web hosting provider. Web hosting providers can now offer a complete security solution to their customers from one of the most trusted and recognized brands in cybersecurity. Encryption Everywhere is the first security solution that gives web hosting providers an upsell opportunity to bring in new revenue streams without incurring a burden to their infrastructure, sales processes or administration teams.

Symantec will launch the Encryption Everywhere with a number of global web hosting partners, including InterNetX, one of the largest providers of domains, webspace and hosting products for resellers.

Encryption Everywhere is available immediately wherever Symantec SSL/TLS and security certificates are sold. For more information, visit go.symantec.com/encryptioneverywhere.
