Web Hosting Company Shuts Down Conservative Site Boycotting Target Stores
The conservative group 2ndVote has called for a boycott on Christmas shopping at the retail giant Target over its bathroom policies. But on Nov. 23, Leadpages, the company hosting the #AnywhereButTARGET boycott campaign's website, sent 2ndVote an email requesting the page be taken down.
In his email to 2ndVote, Leadpages' director of operations, Doug Storbeck, stated that the campaign website violated the company's terms of service, specifically, the portion prohibiting any content that is "hateful or discriminatory based on race, color, sex, religion, nationality, ethnic or national origin, marital status, disability, sexual orientation or age or is otherwise objectionable."
In his email to 2ndVote, Storbeck also wrote:
At Leadpages, we strive to create an inclusive workplace that upholds the dignity of all people. We value, respect, and celebrate everyone's individualities and honor their unique strengths from all different walks of life.
"Leadpages must have sensed our campaign was gaining momentum so they resorted to the typical liberal bully tactics of shutting down and censoring ideas they don't agree with and calling them 'hateful' or 'discriminatory,'" Robert Kuykendall, 2ndVote's director of communications, said in a statement. "Apparently, Leadpages wanted to use the cover of Thanksgiving Day thinking they could quietly make #AnywhereButTARGET disappear."
"Liberals who constantly tout tolerance and inclusion go out of their way to shut down ideas they disagree with" Lance Wray, executive director at 2ndVote, said in a statement. "To say our campaign is about inequality, intolerance, hate, discrimination, or devaluing anyone is flat wrong, it's about common sense and safety. But, some of the truest hate and intolerance we've seen has come from the liberal responses to our campaign."
After being shut down on Thanksgiving Day, the #AnywhereButTarget website is now back up. Target did not respond to a request for comment from The Daily Signal.

Local homeowners take advantage of Web-based room sharing option
There's no place like home. And when you're on the road, sometimes a hotel just isn't homey enough.
That's where people such as Aimee Martens and Frank Shmays come in. They host travelers in their homes through Airbnb, a Web-based marketplace where people offer lodging options ranging from a shared room to an entire home to rent.
Martens and Shmays each own homes on Lake Lanier in Gainesville and offer different ways to experience the area.
Martens listed a room in her Pemmican Run house for rent for $100 a night on Airbnb in mid-September. Since then, she's been host to 30 to 40 guests.
When he's not using it, Shmays lists his entire lake house — his second home — for rent for $165 a night on the website.
Martens said she didn't realize there was such a market for this type of lodging arrangement.
"If I have it open and I don't block it, it's booked," said Martens, adding hosts can block off certain dates on the website.
She also has an instant book option on her account, allowing people to rent her room without first contacting her.
Shmays has been posting his home on Airbnb since June. His four-bedroom lake house sleeps up to 10. He estimates he's been host to about 20 guests since June.
Since Shmays isn't in the home at the same time as his guests, they have free use of the house.
"I've had the house for almost three years," Shmays said. "I use it with the kids, generally during the summers, but it sits vacant the majority of the year."
Hosting guests brings in additional income and keeps the home occupied. He's had visitors from California, North Carolina, Louisiana and overseas.
"It's just a different experience from being in a hotel," he said.
Martens decided to offer a room for rent after using Airbnb to stay in Atlanta with her family. She had such a great time, then realized she also had room in her home for travelers.
"Everybody I've met so far has just been amazing," she said. "Sometimes I don't even know they're there."
Martens shares her home with her two young adult children. She said she feels safe allowing guests in her home, though all have to be verified by Airbnb in several ways before she will accept them.
"I live in a pretty large home and it's just me," Martens said. "I have two kids. One's off doing her own job. And we have lots of different rooms in the house. I thought it would be a good opportunity to help with the income and pay for utilities and things like that."
Martens offers a bedroom similar in size to a hotel room, plus a bathroom. She soon hopes to open her basement with two bunk beds.
Martens' listing on Airbnb features photos of the room and views from its windows. It boasts a dock and lake access for swimming and fishing, a pool and hot tub, a gazebo with outdoor kitchen and a game room with bar area. Common areas outside of the bedroom are shared with guests.
"If you're looking for a nice, relaxing weekend, it's better than a hotel," she said.
Martens said she enjoys interacting with her guests and encourages other people to give hosting with Airbnb a try.
"Do it if you're an outgoing person and you don't mind meeting other people," she said.
Shmays' advice to anyone considering Airbnb is to be open-minded.
"The hard hurdle is it's your personal home that you're offering to share with other people," he said. "I enjoy sharing it, not necessarily for the extra income, but because it's a nice place."
Martens said it's easy to get started. First, log on to the website, upload photos and describe what you're offering. Then upload pictures and set a price.
Shmays agrees, saying the website is user-friendly with blogs for advice.
"The biggest part is the write-up," Shmays said. "You're inviting guests into your home. They have to know 1) who you are, and 2) enough information about the property to make a determination if they want to stay there."
Shmays suggests being upfront in your listing about house rules and what is expected of guests. Be as transparent as possible in the description and photos.
Airbnb holds a security deposit if the home is damaged.
"Communication is absolutely the key to being a successful host in this community," he said.
Shmays said posting pictures of nearby attractions is also useful. He said feedback drives the Airbnb community.
"The reviews and feedback you get from guests make you feel good when you hear those kinds of things about your home," he said.

Channel 4 bosses are now urgently searching for a big-name replacement for The Crystal Maze after making the show's return next year a top priority following the success of the special.

The funnyman recently hosted the celebrity special of the showA TV insider said: "Stephen has made Channel 4's job a lot harder by refusing to return for a full series. He was never too keen but the hope was he'd be swayed by the ratings.
"Channel 4 is desperate to get the show back on air as soon as it can and is looking for it to be a significant part of its 2017 schedule but the fact it has no host is obviously a major obstacle.
"The Crystal Maze is a great format but it falls flat without the right host. Stephen was witty, energetic and had a bald head — he ticked all the boxes. It will be tricky to find someone who can do the job as well as him."
Stephen seemed reluctant to commit to the game show long-term even when speaking about the special, saying: "We haven't discussed it being a series but for me personally that would be tough.

"And whilst Stephen was an electrifying host he was always very clear that work commitments meant he would only be able to do the celebrity special."

Despite the global trend of hosting big and small data in the cloud, which gives room for huge reduction in the cost of doing businesses, increase in market shares and also help organisations to remain relevant in their various lines of businesses, adoption rate of cloud technology in Nigeria is still low.
Although organisations that handle big data operations have pointed out insecurity around cloud computing, as reason for not investing in cloud technology, the recent collaboration between Garanntor, an Infrastructure-as-a- Service company that is into cloud hosting, and RackCentre, a Tier 111 collocation data hosting company, operating in Nigeria, will go a long way in addressing organisation's fears about hosting their big data in the cloud, where they believed that their competitors could have access to their data to launch attack at them.

Both men are going to report directly to President Trump, and be, according to the press release, equal partners in running the administration.

HALPERIN: I think Bannon should speak -- Trump should speak about him by not addressing these issues head-on, they're allowing him to be defined in a negative way, and rightfully so. He's got a fuller resume than just his time at Breitbart, but people are alarmed by his association with Breitbart, they're doing nothing to really address it except saying Bannon's a great guy, and I think they are creating a problem that they should address head-on.
If Bannon is going to be a senior government official, he needs to be accountable, and Trump needs to explain why he is willing to overlook, which he apparently is, some of the most controversial aspects of what Breitbart has done.

Owner of former short-term rental property in Hermosa Beach disputes city penalties

As the city continues enforcement of its prohibition of short-term rentals in residential areas, a property owner who previously sued the city to block the law is again in the crossfire, this time as the recipient of some of the hefty fines that the law imposes.
Jim Holtz, owner a South Hermosa property that until recently operated as a short-term rental, says he complied with the new law, but is now facing $15,000 in fines. He believes he has been treated harshly because "the city wants to make a statement with me."
"I thought it was going to be about compliance. But it now seems to be about punishment," Holtz said in an interview.
The city, for its part, says that the law is being administered uniformly, and that any claims Holtz has must be addressed through the traditional appeals process.
The fines stem from three alleged violations of laws passed by the city in June. Notably, the law made punishable advertising of short-term rentals. Police and code enforcement officials had struggled to address the problem by responding to nuisance calls at problem properties. And Airbnb, VRBO and other websites have still not responded to outreach from Hermosa, according to Community Development Director Ken Robertson. (A search for "Hermosa Beach" on Airbnb reveals hundreds of properties still available.) So the city targeted online ads, imposing an escalating schedule of fines on property owners who offer their homes for rent for periods of less than 30 days.
The city began enforcing the advertising provision in the end of August, according to Code Enforcement Officer Justin Edson. Holtz said that he changed the online settings for his property in late June to indicate that it could only be rented for 30 days or more. But at least one site, Dreamcatcher, continued to run Holtz's listing as a short-term rental.
Holtz, a San Pedro resident, said he did not become aware until October, when he came by the Hermosa property to check on an occupant with two-month tenancy. He found three certified letters from the city in the mailbox: a warning letter dated Sept. 14, a first violation notice dated Sept. 24, and a second violation dated Oct. 9.
Under the law, the first violation carries a penalty of $2,500, the second $5,000. On seeing this, Holtz said he attempted to get the owner of Dreamcatcher to take down the listing and, when this did not work, contacted the web hosting company to temporarily shut down the site. Holtz tallied a third violation, for $7,500, on Oct. 24, from an advertisement on a Manhattan Beach-based website that he said he was unaware of.
State law requires Holtz to pay the money owed prior to going before an appeals officer. Holtz has filled out a request for a financial exemption, and said that, because he attempted to take the listings down, his violations are not the kind of thing the city intended to target with its law.
Robertson said that the city looks at the circumstances of all claims and, if Holtz's claims are true, he will have an opportunity to make his case.
"That's something we're trying to figure out. If that's true, he can make that case through the appeals process," Robertson said.
Holtz also claims that his situation reveals underlying problems with the advertising provision of the law. He said he often finds fraudulent listings for his property, for he which he could theoretically be held responsible.
"I am constantly finding my ad copied on Craigslist. Some person in Nigeria will say 'short-term rental,' at my place, and 'pay in Bitcoin,'" Holtz said.
Because rental websites do not list the addresses of offered homes, the law's enforcement scheme included a contract with Host Compliance, a San Francisco web site that uses Internet metadata to link listings with addresses. Ulrik Binzer, founder and CEO of Host Compliance, said that the company relies on 18 different publicly available data sources, but that "it would be hard" for the company to identify fraudulent listings with its software, and that such an issue would be dealt with on the city's end.
Edson said that the city's code enforcement operation thoroughly investigates all claims. He noted that the city has identified 180 properties through Host Compliance's database, but that only a fraction of those have received citations.
"Before we issue any citation, we make sure that all the evidence, everything that we have been provided, is accurate in our belief," Edson said.
