Best website hosts for photography websites

We look at the best website hosting companies that create and host websites solely for photographers.

Choosing the right hosting company can be a tricky process as they all have their own individual strengths and weaknesses. Some have integrated printing partnerships that allows for the fulfillment of print orders ordered from your website, while others don't offer any e-commerce services at all. Some give you unlimited space, while others give you a free .com domain. The trick, as ever, is to decide what's most important to you and go with a company that caters most specifically to your need.

With the one exception of WordPress – whose inclusion here is easily justified by its sheer size, flexibility and almost limitless number of custom templates – the one thing we would advise is to stick with a website host that caters specifically for photographers.

The main reason for this is that the focus of these companies is to create and host websites solely for photographers.

More specifically, going with one of these companies – as opposed to a more generic website hosting partner – will allow you to access the tools and services that can be so useful to photographers. In addition, there's another reason why it's worth sticking with a photography-focused website hosting partner.

The reason is, their customer service department and online resources will be much more geared towards dealing with the specific kinds of issues encountered by photographers – whether it's getting a gallery to display the way you want it to or adjusting the mark-up prices of your images sold through your website.

Best website hosts for photography websites SmugMug

Website: smugmug.comPrice: £2.30 – £17.30 per month (if paid annually)

smugmug

SmugMug is one of the biggest and most popular photographic website hosting companies on the market and currently offers four distinct plans: Basic, Power, Pro and Business. While none of these are free, SmugMug does operate a 14-day free trial that allows you to try before you buy.

The Basic plan costs £2.30 a month if paid annually in advance, for which you get full access to the range of ad-free SmugMug website templates, unlimited photo and video uploads, plus the ability to create private images and password-protected galleries. Basic plan holders can sell their images, with all orders fulfilled by USA-based printer EZ Prints. Those on more advanced plans, meanwhile, can choose between BayPhotos and WHCC (also from the USA), or UK-based Loxley Colour. If you want to use a personalised domain name without smugmug in the website address then you'll need to subscribe to a Power plan or higher. If you've purchased your domain name from GoDaddy then SmugMug provides an easy-to-use linking tool.

The actual website-building process is simple; SmugMug provides you with a generous range of templates that can be customised as you see fit. The choice of templates is excellent and encompasses everything from minimal layouts to more complex and busy styles. You can also rearrange these templates, or build your own pages entirely from scratch using placeholder image and text blocks. Users who are more advanced can also input custom HTML or CSS code if they want to.

Squarespace

Squarespace

Website: squarespace.comPrice: £5.50 – £12 per month (if paid annually)

While Squarespace does not specifically target photographers or offer any integrated printing fulfillment services, it does provide a huge range of stylish templates along with an easy-to-use drag-and-drop website-building platform. For these reasons Squarespace is better suited to those photographers looking to create a personal website purely for portfolio and image backup purposes. More commercially minded photographers who require integrated print fulfillment services or other bespoke client-facing services will find better options elsewhere.

Squarespace offers two plans: Personal and Business. The Personal plan is limited to 20 pages, whereas the Business plan comes with unlimited pages. One perk of going with Squarespace is that customers who subscribe to an annual billing plan can take advantage of a free personalised domain name as part of their package. This is something that would otherwise cost you around £10-20 to buy direct from the likes of GoDaddy. Domains offered include the catch-all '.com' top level domain, which essentially allows you to create a website with the address www.yourname.com – unless, of course, your name is already taken!

Another big reason to opt for Squarespace is that they offer over 40 website templates to choose from. Squarespace's bespoke website-building tools are easy to use, too – once you've populated your site you can even switch templates and the site will automatically rearrange all your content to fit the new template.

Photodeck

Photodeck

Website: photodeck.comPrice: £9.99 – £49.99 per month (if paid annually)

Launched in 2009, Photodeck is a relative newcomer to the personalised website building industry, yet has already gained a fantastic reputation among photographers. Unlike many leading website-building platforms that are more general in their outlook, Photodeck caters solely to photographers. While Photodeck isn't by any means the cheapest website building platform on the market, it does offer a huge range of tools and services that cater specifically to the needs of photographers.

At present the company offers three plans: Folio, Pro and Studio. Folio users enjoy 10GB of storage, Pro users get 60GB and Studio users get 100GB. The main difference between the three plans is that the basic Folio plan does not have any integrated e-commerce or printing services, nor can you create any private or password protected galleries for use by clients. Those on the Pro and Studio plans can sell prints and other photo gifts directly through their website, with orders fulfilled by professional print labs WHCC (USA) and One Vision Imaging (UK). Better still, Photodeck takes 0% commission from all online orders – to our knowledge they are the only website hosting company to offer this.

As with virtually all of the big website building companies, Photodeck offers a good range of templates for you to get started with, along with plenty of customisation options. In addition they also support integrated blog and social media functionality that enables you to run your blog and add new content directly from your Photodeck website.

Zenfolio

Zenfiolio

Website: zenfolio.comPrice: £5 – £25 per month (if paid annually)

Zenfolio is another well-respected website creation and hosting company that caters specifically for photographers. At present Zenfolio offers three plans: Starter, Pro and Advanced. While none of these are free, the company offers a 14-day free trial.

While the Pro and Advanced plans cater primarily to professionals, the Starter plan is an easy and cost-effective way to get your images online and comes with unlimited storage. You can set your images to be public or private, and can also create private galleries. Unlike SmugMug, Zenfolio also gives you all the tools you need to create and maintain a blog on your website – rather than linking to an externally hosted one. If you would like to use a personalised domain name then this is also possible too – even for those on the Starter plan. Zenfolio provides detailed instructions on how to do this for a number of popular domain registration services including GoDaddy. In addition, Zenfolio also provides comprehensive online support for just about everything you might need to build and maintain your website, including numerous tutorials and 'how-to' videos.

Zenfolio customers can sell prints and photo gifts directly through PhotoBox. Those on the Pro and Advanced plans can also choose to use One Vision Imaging (UK-based). When creating your website, you won't need any coding skills whatsoever – simply choose a template and follow the instructions. While Zenfolio's website-building tools aren't quite as extensive or flexible as SmugMug's, some claim they are easier to work with.

500px

500px

Website: portfolios.500px.comPrice: £4.30 – £11.50 per month (if paid annually)

While 500px is primarily an online photography community in the same vein as Flickr, one big difference between the two is that 500px users can take advantage of the company's bespoke Portfolio service to create their own bespoke websites. Portfolio websites are hosted completely separately from 500px public profiles and are not subject to comments or ratings. The Portfolio option is only available to those 500px users subscribing to the company's Awesome plan or higher. The main benefits to a 500px Portfolio website include unlimited uploads, the ability to use a personalised domain name at no extra cost, and the ability to sell your images though the 500px Marketplace.

One thing to note about signing up to a 500px Portfolio website is that you won't be able to sell prints directly from your website. This is because the 500px Marketplace only deals in royalty-free licenses for stock images rather than ready-to-hang prints and wall mounts. At the time of writing, 500px's commission for Marketplace sales is listed as 40% of the total sale price. This arrangement will undoubtedly suit certain types of photographer much more than others.

As far as presentation and ease-of-use goes, 500px offers a decent range of templates to choose from and is generally considered to be easy to use. While there's no need for any knowledge of coding language you can insert CSS, HTML or Javascript code if you know it. While some help is provided online, we did find that it wasn't quite as in-depth as some of the other website hosting companies.

Photoshelter

Photoshelter2

Website: photoshelter.comPrice: £5.50 – £31.15 per month (if paid annually)

Photoshelter currently hosts around 80,000 photography websites around the world, and is especially popular with professionals on account of the company's extensive e-commerce and client-facing services. In fact, Photoshelter even allows you to submit your images to its own stock library, from which third parties can buy rights-managed images.

Photoshelter currently offers three plans: Basic, Standard and Pro. Basic users are limited to 4GB of storage, while Standard users get 100GB. Pro users, meanwhile, get unlimited storage. Protection against right-click image theft is provided as standard, along with the ability to make individual images or galleries private. Photographers looking to sell their work through Photoshelter have access to a number of printing services including Loxley Colour in the UK.

While Photoshelter only offers nine basic templates, each of them is highly customisable. You can can change background colours, fonts, rearrange the layout, add your own logo and much more. Built-in social network integration allows you to link directly to your Facebook and Twitter profiles. All three plans allow you to use your own personalised domain name at no extra cost. While Photoshelter does not provide any built-in blogging tools of its own, you can easily link to blogging platforms such as WordPress and Tumblr directly from your website. Under the hood Photoshelter runs on HTML5, which means websites built with it will automatically scale to fit tablet and other mobile screens perfectly.

WordPress

Wordpress

Website: WordPress.comPrice: Free – £20

WordPress is by far the biggest content management system in the world and currently powers around a quarter of all websites. As it is an open source application, those with the requisite skills can download the latest WordPress release free of charge, choose their own website hosting partner and set themselves up completely independently.

However, given that this is beyond the scope of most people, WordPress also offers its own range of free and paid plans via WordPress.com which greatly simplifies the whole process by putting everything you need in one place with a fixed monthly price.

At present, WordPress offers three distinct plans. The Free plan is exactly that and provides a great way to get started, although storage is limited to 3GB and you cannot use a custom domain name. For £7 a month the Premium plan gives you 13GB of storage, unlimited ad-free pages and blog posts, along with the ability to use a custom domain name that can be registered directly through WordPress for around £15 per year. For £20 a month you can upgrade to the Business plan, which offers everything included in the Premium plan plus unlimited storage.

While WordPress is not specifically tailored to photographers, the sheer number of stylish templates and useful plug-ins available make it a fantastic and highly-cost effective way to build yourself a simple portfolio website with. Better still, you can take advantage of the WordPress platform to incorporate a blog directly into your site to give it a more personable feel.

Edge Hosting has announced a partnership with and the availability of CloudFlare, a web application firewall, CDN and DDoS mitigation service.

"This partnership enhances Edge Hosting's world class, perimeter layer, application (layer 7) defensive mechanism," said Mark Houpt, Edge Hosting CISO. "The goal was to enable a new layer of customer controlled defense and compliance through the application of DDoS filters and mitigations, the web application firewall (WAF) feature and the added benefit of response time generated by the content delivery network (CDN) feature."

How it works:Once CloudFlare is implemented, web traffic is routed through an intelligent global network filtering, scrubbing and caching traffic to maximize performance. The solution optimizes the delivery of the web pages to drive faster page load times while improving availability. The CloudFlare solution blocks threats and limits abusive bots and crawlers from consuming bandwidth and server resources. The result: websites see a significant improvement in performance and a decrease in successful attacks.

On average, a website with CloudFlare:

  • Loads significantly faster through the use of SPDY and HTTP/2
  • Sees a 60% decrease in utilized bandwidth at the origin due to caching
  • Has 65% fewer requests due to caching
  • Experiences a drop in malicious traffic passing to the origin
  • Edge Hosting's philosophy is to provide the most secure, scalable and dependable managed hosting experience to customers. This approach is the main reason why so many businesses migrate to Edge Hosting for their cloud and dedicated managed hosting needs.

    AccuWeb Hosting

The Web hosting well is a deep one, with many services vying for your dollar. There are plenty of excellent choices, and AccuWeb Hosting is among them with robust shared, virtual-private-server, dedicated, and WordPress hosting plans that offer plenty of flexibility. Though AccuWeb Hosting doesn't claim top rank in any one hosting sub-category and does suffer from a few minor complaints, it's still an excellent all-around service. In the end, DreamHost and HostGator remain our top picks overall.

Shared Web HostingAccuWeb Hosting is a Web host with incredibly varied shared plans. The company's lower-end, Linux-based solid-state servers start at $3.36 per month for unlimited domains, 10GB of storage, 150 email accounts, and 60GB of data transfers, while the top-tier servers start at $13.56 per month for 50GB of storage, 1,000 email accounts, and 200GB of monthly data transfers.

AccuWeb Hosting also offers Linux Cloud Hosting (starting at $5.06 per month), Windows Cloud Hosting (starting at $6.35 per month), and Windows Classic Hosting (starting at $4.21 per month). This adds up to lots of options for hosting your business or personal site. Also, you shouldn't underestimate the importance of Windows-based servers; they're vital if you want to run .ASP scripts, and some other hosts don't offer them.

These are quality shared hosting plans, but HostGator, the category's Editors' Choice, tops them all. The Web host's shared packages all boast unlimited storage, bandwidth, and email addresses—and unlimited domains if you sign up for either the Baby ($7.96 per month) or Business ($11.96 per month) plans. Likewise, DreamHost's shared packages have unlimited storage, domains, email, and monthly data transfers.

VPS Web HostingAccuWeb Hosting has seven wallet-friendly Linux- and Windows-based VPS plans for webmasters to consider, ranging from Linux Classic (from $7.99 per month) to Windows VPS Reseller (starting at $115 per month). If you need more juice, AccuWeb has a VPS package that tops out at 30GB of RAM, 1,000GB of storage, and 6,000GB of monthly data transfers, with its $315-per-month SkyScraper VPS Reseller plan. Note: You can create 250 email accounts with a Windows VPS plan; you can create unlimited email accounts with a Linux VPS plan.

The number of AccuWeb Hosting packages isn't very different from Hostwinds' offerings. Still, Hostwinds retains its position as the Editors' Choice for VPS hosting. It offers five options ranging from Budget (starting at $7.50 per month) to SSD Windows (starting at $13.50 per month). The company includes unlimited monthly data transfers and unlimited email with every VPS plan, and has a high-end $209.50 per month plan that boasts an impressive 35GB of RAM and 170GB of storage.

Dedicated Web HostingAccuWeb Hosting has three tiers of dedicated hosting: SSD (starting at $105 per month); Low Cost (starting at $110); and High RAM (starting at $455 per month). As with the VPS plan, AccuWeb's Windows-based dedicated hosting plan lets you create up to 250 email accounts; with a Linux-based dedicated plan, you can create unlimited email accounts.

If you want a dedicated server that handles the rigors of high-intensity Internet traffic, you'll be happy to know that you can spec out a high-end server with an incredible 20TB of monthly data transfers, 256GB of RAM, and four 600GB solid-state drives—if you're willing to pay more than $1,000 per month. Still, that's a more wallet-friendly option than what Media Temple offers; its dedicated hosting starts at $2,000 for unlimited domains, 10TB of monthly data transfers, 128GB of RAM, and 1TB of solid-state storage.

Overall, AccuWeb Hosting's dedicated hosting plans are varied and quite flexible. The servers have high-end specs that you won't get from HostGator, which maxes out with a $280 per month server that boasts 25TB of monthly data transfers, 16GB of RAM, and a 1,000GB hard drive. Arvixe, the Editors' Choice for dedicated hosting, surpasses both of them with a top-tier, $357 per month option that includes 32GB of RAM, 1TB of storage, and unlimited monthly data transfers.

Managed WordPressWebmasters who are serious about their WordPress installations will be happy to know that AccuWeb Hosting offers managed WordPress hosting that gives your site the white-glove treatment. This includes a preinstalled content management system, 24/7 support, automatic updates, and multilayer DDoS protection.

The WordPress Personal Web Hosting plan ($3.99 per month) offers unlimited domains, 10GB of storage, 60GB of monthly data transfers, and free WordPress migration and domain name registration. The WordPress Business Web Hosting plan (5.99 per month) ups the numbers to 30GB of storage, and 100GB of monthly data transfers, and includes search engine optimization and page caching plug-ins. The top-tier WordPress Enterprise Web Hosting plan ($10.99 per month) builds upon the other tiers with 50GB of storage, 200GB of monthly data transfers, and a free Secure Socket Layer (SSL) certificate. All the plans include one-click installation, Google Apps integration, and free daily backups.

These packages nearly rival the ones offered by 1&1, the Editors' Choice for managed WordPress hosting. The top dog boasts WP Basic ($6.99 per month), WP Plus ($9.99 per month), and WP Unlimited ($14.99 per month) plans that include unlimited monthly data transfers, unlimited email, automatic malware detection and removal, automatic WordPress updates, and a curated list of recommended WordPress plug-ins and themes.

Site Creation and E-Commerce Tools Creating an AccuWeb Hosting account is quite simple. After signing up for a plan, I received welcome emails and a note that it could take up to 48 hours for AccuWeb Hosting to set up my account. Fortunately, I didn't have to wait two days; the URL was up and running roughly two hours later.

I appreciated AccuWeb Hosting's custom cPanel back-end interface, as it's far easier to read and navigate than the traditional cPanel. I used it to access the Softaculous software library and to install WordPress as the content management system. I'm quite familiar with WordPress, so it was a breeze to create posts and pages and apply an attractive theme. In fact, even if you aren't familiar with WordPress, it should be simple to use. There is also software for non-WordPress website building, including Joomla and the PrestaShop ecommerce option.

I later used Magento to create an online store. It let me quickly create an attractive shop in just a few minutes by dragging and dropping website elements. I like that Magento has the fliexibility to house multiple storefronts and integrate eBay accounts.

Security OptionsAccuWeb Hosting gives you plenty of options for safeguarding your website from those who would do harm. You can add a 128-bit SSL certificate ($49 per year), SpamExperts spam blocker (starting at $5.85 per quarter), and ID protection (for $8 per year). If you're serious about your site's security, you should look into all of these options.

Excellent UptimeWebsite uptime is one of the most important aspects of a hosting service. While your site is down, clients or customers will be unable to find you or access your products or services—and they might not come back.

For this testing, I used a website-monitoring tool to track my AccuWeb Hosting-hosted test site's uptime. Every 15 minutes, the tool pinged my website and sent me an email if it was unable to contact the site for longer than one minute. I looked at the data for the most recent two weeks for each site's review. In my latest tests, AccuWeb Hosting proved incredibly stable. Of all the Web hosting services I've reviewed, only Arvixe matched its reliability over the most recent testing perioud . As long as it keeps on this course, you can count on it to deliver a rock-solid Web hosting experience.

Impressive Customer Service AccuWeb Hosting offers both Web chat and 24/7 telephone customer support. When you ask a question via Web chat, AccuWeb Hosting serves up links to a knowledge database. When I asked about the difference between regular hosting and cloud-based hosting, AccuWeb Hosting linked to me satisfactory answers. Still, I tested the customer service by asking a representative the same question—and he linked me to the same knowledge base article!

I also gave telephone support (available 24/7) a call with the same question. The rep also gave me a satisfactory answer. I was incredibly pleased by AccuWeb Hosting's help squad. It was easily one of the best customer service teams I've encountered in the Web hosting space.

Money-Back GuaranteeAccuWeb Hosting has a decent 30-day money-back guarantee, but DreamHost bests it with an impressive 97-day money-back guarantee.

A Good Web HostAccuWeb Hosting is a well-rounded service that you can count on for building a rock-solid website. It may fall just short of the Editors' Choice award-winning packages offered by DreamHost and HostGator, but it's worth checking out if you need quality shared, VPS, dedicated, or managed WordPress hosting.

WiredTree Celebrates A Decade Of Managed Hosting Excellence

June 28, 2016 -- WiredTree Celebrates A Decade Of Managed Hosting Excellence

WiredTree, a provider of fully managed server hosting, will celebrate its tenth birthday this June. Over the last ten years, WiredTree has cultivated a reputation as a managed server host dedicated to building long-term relationships with happy clients.

Since WiredTree was founded in June 2006, the web hosting industry has changed beyond all recognition. WiredTree has changed too. The company constantly innovates to remain on the cutting-edge of server and network technology. WiredTree's clients have come to love the company's regular ?Level-ups," which increase server resources for hosting accounts without increasing the cost.

While the company's technology has changed, the values that inform its approach to support and server management have not. Providing innovative managed server solutions with customer support of unparalleled excellence remains WiredTree's core mission. That approach has helped the company build sustainable relationships with server hosting clients and allowed it to flourish for a decade in a turbulent and rapidly evolving marketing.

When can you call a web hosting service the best web hosting

When you have made up your mind to start a business and make your presence online, you need to first choose a web host. The web host is like the plaza in which you open your shop for customers to visit. There are many web hosting services available online and doing some research along with going through some customer reviews is best before you pick one. However, the first thing that you need to know are the requirements that a web hosting service must met to be called the best hosting service.

First thing that you need to know is that there are different types of hosting. You could pick dedicated server hosting, shared hosting, virtual private server hosting or many other types of hosting plans. Dedicated server hosting is when you get a server dedicated for only your website and so you use all of its resources. You have good control over your server but this type of hosting is one of the most expensive ones. Shared hosting is almost always the first pick for starting businesses because it meets all their needs. In this hosting you share a server with many other websites.

You get access to only limited and specified resources on the server but you don't mind that because that's more than enough for a starting website. It is also one of the most affordable types of hosting plans. However, different web hosting companies will offer different rates based on what sub-services they are offering with shared hosting. The most affordable service available on the internet as of now is Temok. It is only for a limited time but their rates are probably the best on the internet for their hosting plans.

Other things that need to be looked at when picking up the best hosting plan is how much bandwidth you are being offered, the ability to add further domains and parked domains. It is best if you are able to find a service that does not have any cap on bandwidth. Temok does not have any limit on its bandwidth offering even on its most basic package. You can add multiple domains on the same plan and you could even go for parked domains if you want. How much space you are offered as a starting website should not matter because less is more at this point.

One of the most important yet ignored things when picking up best hosting services is quality customer support. You won't realize the value of good customer support until you are in some technical trouble and they don't pick your phone up. Even a minute of downtime for a website can be detrimental to its traffic population. More importantly, you need your servers up and running at their optimum when you have spikes on your website. In a nutshell, you need to ask about the customer service and if it is available for 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

    Web.com Web Hosting

Large or small, every business needs a website. A company without a Web presence leaves many opportunities on the table, as a well-designed website is a factor to attracting clients or customers. And those visitors can translate into big money. You don't want to miss out on the money, so choosing a Web hosting service and setting up your website is essential. Fortunately, with the right service, the process can be relatively simple and reasonably affordable.

Getting Started The first step is to find a Web host, the company that will store your website's files on its servers and deliver them to your readers' and customers' browsers. Web hosting services offer varying amounts of monthly data transfers, storage, email, and other features. Even how you pay (month-to-month payments vs. annual payments) can be radically different, too, so taking the time to plot out exactly what your company needs for online success is essential.

Web hosting services also offer different types of hosting, including shared, virtual private server (VPS), dedicated hosting, and managed WordPress hosting plans. Shared hosting is good for users who don't want to spend a lot of money on hosting packages and don't mind some of its traffic and data transfer limitations. VPS hosting is great for small businesses that want more power than shared hosting, but don't want to deal with dedicated hosting's prices. Dedicated hosting, on the other hand, is both powerful and pricey; it's reserved for sites that experience incredibly high levels of traffic per day. Managed WordPress hosting is for those who want to build their sites on the back of the popular WordPress content management system (CMS), but don't want to bother with a lot of the backend stuff (such as updating the apps and CMS, and enabling automatic backups).

If you're not sure of the type of hosting your business needs, you might want to start small, with shared Web hosting. You can always graduate to a more robust, feature-rich package of, say, VPS hosting or even dedicated hosting in the future. Unfortunately, some hosts don't offer all hosting types. Consider how much you expect to grow your website, and how soon, before you commit to anything longer than a one-year plan. It's worth spending the time up front to make sure that the host you select with is able to provide the growth you envision for your site, as switching Web hosting providers midstream is not a trivial undertaking.

Once you decide you price range, you need to consider how long you'll need Web hosting. If it's a short-term project—say, less than a month or two—you can typically receive a refund should you cancel your hosting within 60 days. Some companies offer 30-day money-back guarantees, others offer 90-day money-back guarantees. Once again, it's beneficial to do your homework.

The Features You Need Many Web hosts offer limited features in their starter packages and then expand the offerings (sometimes tremendously) for higher-tier plans. Read the small print to make sure the plan you are selecting offers what you need. If you need a site builder application to design your website, make sure that the low-cost Web host you are picking actually comes with a site builder. Many of them require you to pay for the builder as a separate add-on. Website builders usually don't cost a lot of money, but if you can find a Web host that includes one for free, that's money in your pocket. And, if it's integrated with your hosting service, you're more likely to have a smooth, supported experience.

You also want a Web host with 24/7 customer support—if not by phone, then at least by chat. Forums, knowledge bases, and help tickets are all well and good, but sometimes you just need to communicate with another human to get things ironed out as quickly as possible. That said, not all 24/7 customer support teams are equal. Companies like GoDaddy and Liquid Web boast incredibly knowledgeable and helpful customer support squads—a fact that we confirmed in our in-depth reviews of those Web hosting services.

When it comes to server operating systems, Linux is typically the default option. Still, some services offer a choice of Linux or Windows hosting. If you have specific server-side applications that require Windows, such as SQL Server or a custom application written in .NET, then you need to make sure your Web host has Windows hosting. But don't let the idea of a Linux host intimidate you. Nowadays, most Web hosts offer a graphical interface or a control panel to simplify server administration and website management. Instead of typing at the command line, you'll click easily identifiable icons.

Windows hosting is often more expensive than Linux hosting, especially in the dedicated server area. That's not always the case, but it's something you should be aware of as you shop around.

Uptime, Uptime, Uptime! The aforementioned features are valuable to the Web hosting experience, but none matches the importance of site uptime. If your site is down, clients or customers will be unable to find you or access your products or services.

Recently, we've added uptime monitoring to our review process, and the results show that most Web hosts do an excellent job of keeping sites up and running. Web hosts with uptime issues are heavily penalized during the review process and are unable to qualify for top ratings.

Some Additional InformationOne thing we learned in reviewing the services listed here (and many more) is that even though the packages are very similar, they are not identical. Some are more security-focused than others, offering anti-spam and anti-malware tools. Others offer a variety of email marketing tools. While most of the hosts we've reviewed have built-in e-commerce, you may want to consider using a more-robust third-party online shopping cart application like Shopify instead.

Review: Bill Simmons as TV Host: Heavy on Sports and Cursing

Photo Ben Affleck, left, and Bill Simmons on Mr. Simmons's new talk show on HBO. Credit Jordan Althaus/HBO

You can take Bill Simmons out of the sports network, but you cannot, apparently, take the sports obsession out of Bill Simmons.

Or even dilute it, based on the Wednesday night debut of his HBO talk show, "Any Given Wednesday With Bill Simmons." It has been billed as "spanning pop culture and touching on everything from sports and entertainment to arts and technology." Yeah, right. Mr. Simmons opened with five minutes of gushing about LeBron James, who on Sunday led the Cleveland Cavaliers to the National Basketball Association title. Then he brought on Charles Barkley, the former N.B.A. star, for another nine minutes of basketball talk.

Then came a set piece on Stephen Curry, the one-man scoring machine for the Golden State Warriors, the team that lost to the Cavaliers on Sunday. Finally, at the 19-minute mark of the half-hour show, out came Mr. Simmons's second guest, Ben Affleck. They did about three minutes on Mr. Affleck's acting and directing career, then plunged into a tag-team assault on the National Football League over the Deflategate scandal.

Maybe next week Mr. Simmons will get around to the pop culture, arts and technology material?

The show had been hotly anticipated in some circles, largely because of the way the host came to have it. Mr. Simmons became a star during his 14 years at ESPN, where he wrote a column, had a popular podcast, helped create the acclaimed "30 for 30" documentary series and was editor of the now-defunct Grantland website. But after assorted clashes with manage ment — some involving his disparaging remarks about the N.F.L. commissioner, Roger Goodell — his contract was not renewed last year.

So HBO scooped him up, but if the hope was that he would bring his lively, attention-getting style to a broader variety of subjects and thus a general audience, that wasn't realized in the premiere. Mr. Simmons stayed in his comfort zone almost exclusively, and the result was largely a televised version of what you might hear on sports talk radio, only with cursing.

The cursing was the best part, actually. Mr. Affleck did most of it. Mr. Simmons, who flaunts his Boston roots regularly, introduced him by explaining that of course in his premiere he had to have another Boston guy as a guest.

"Whitey Bulger couldn't make it," he said, "so here's Ben Affleck."

The two seemed at first as if they were going to do the usual Hollywood interview, Mr. Affleck talking about directing "Gone Baby Gone" and a coming "Batman" movie and such. Then the subject switched to Deflategate, the scandal involving the New England Patriots; the team's quarterback, Tom Brady; and some underinflated footballs. And Mr. Affleck, a Patriots and Brady fan, went off.

Mr. Simmons's comments on the scandal contributed to his troubles at ESPN, and he probably hoped to reiterate them in the relatively unfiltered safety of HBO, but he could barely get a word in amid Mr. Affleck's profanity-laced rant. It was pretty hilarious.

It also hinted at what Mr. Simmons needs to work on as he evolves into a TV personality. While he is a former N.B.A. analyst and did some television for ESPN, Mr. Simmons is primarily known as a writer and podcaster; some of his detractors have suggested that this background would not translate well to a talk show. So far, they are right. He's not a natural yet on camera, or adept at keeping up with guests who are going at the speed of Mr. Affleck. But dial up some early footage of, say, Conan O'Brien. Hosting is a learned skill.

Other ESPN alumni have had at least some success making the kind of transition Mr. Simmons is attempting. People forget that the host's chair on "The Daily Show" was filled initially not by Jon Stewart, but by Craig Kilborn, a former ESPN anchor. And of course there is Keith Olbermann. Those men were already seasoned television performers, however.

Mr. Simmons has another new project, theRinger.com, that casts the wide net promised by HBO's description of "Any Given Wednesday." (Mr. Olbermann has already written for it.) There is plenty of sports coverage, but also technology articles, "Game of Thrones" recaps, assorted podcasts and more.

The TV show needs to be just as inclusive if Mr. Simmons wants anyone but sports ad dicts to watch it. He could do worse than to make the show a haven where all sorts of guests could feel free to curse about all sorts of subjects.

Website developer, host helps communities connect

COLUMBUS, Ohio, June 21, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Wednesday's TedX conference in Whitehall is the first of two such events eSchoolView is helping to support this summer.

The TEDxYearlingRoad website was donated and is powered by the Columbus, Ohio-based company. The K-12 website developer and educational management software creator is supporting Wednesday's conference and another in Hilliard, Ohio in August because of the organizers' underlying drive to build deeper ties within their communities.

"The foundation of our work is based on the principle of helping to create powerful and sustainable relationships," eSchoolView Executive Director Rob O'Leary said. "Hosting a TEDx event is a major undertaking and shows an unfettered commitment to community improvement."

TEDx is a global program. The events are based on the format and rules of TED through which short, powerful talks spark meaningful discussions with the ultimate goal of inspiring thought and changing attitudes.

All TEDx events are planned and coordinated by volunteers on a community-by-community basis. The content and design of each TEDx event is unique and developed independently, but all have features in common.

TEDXYearlingRoad: Perception begins at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Walter Armes Learning Center at Whitehall-Yearling High School. Eleven speakers will talk about perception and how preconceived ideas or thoughts often impact how people think about others.

"Our event would not be possible without the help and contributions of partners like eSchoolView," said Ty Debevoise, primary organizer for TEDxYearlingRoad. "They share in our vision to bring inspiring and thought-provoking ideas to our community."

TEDxHilliard: Drive is Aug. 2 at Hilliard Bradley High School. Organizers are putting together a panel of speakers who will share ideas and motivations that propel them forward.

"Collaboration is the bac kbone of a strong community," O'Leary said. "Providing support to these TEDx initiatives is a natural extension of our philanthropic mission. We give back as an effort to pay forward."

eSchoolView serves hundreds of schools and educational organizations across the country. It's Content Management System (CMS) and other software is designed specifically for K-12 schools. CIOReview recently named eSchoolView as one of 50 Most Promising Education Tech Solution Providers.
