In Kenya, UN refugee chief urges support for Somali refugees and host communities

Grandi expresses his gratitude to Kenya for hosting almost half a million refugees and keeping its borders open to people fleeing war.

By Melissa Fleming

NAIROBI, Kenya – UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi has expressed his gratitude to Kenya for continuing to host almost half a million refugees and keeping its borders open to people fleeing war.

In a meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday (Dec 20), Grandi received assurances that as the Somali refugee repatriation programme progresses, no refugee will be returned against his or her will.

"At a time when many other countries are closing their borders and adopting restrictive measures, Kenya is continuing to host refugees," Grandi said. "This commitment of Kenya must be matched by the international community with humanitarian and development funding as well as increased resettlement places, university scholarships and other opportunities."

The Somali refugee crisis is now entering its 27th year and Grandi said that as long as Somalia remains fragile, many refugees will remain apprehensive about returning home. Nevertheless, he noted that a significant number of refugees are deciding to return.

So far this year, over 35,000 refugees from Dadaab refugee camp have moved back to Somalia under UNHCR's voluntary repatriation programme, while over 18,000 have registered to leave. Since December 2014, over 73,000 refugees from Dadaab have returned voluntarily to Somalia.

"These refugees are hopeful, and have made informed choices," Grandi said, pledging continued support from UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency in providing them with reintegration assistance upon arrival in Somalia.

On Monday, in Kismayo, Somalia, where most returning refugees from Dadaab have settled, Grandi met families who had lived in refugee camps in Kenya and Djibouti for two decades. Although the families were concerned about security, they expressed joy about shedding their refugee status and determination to contribute to rebuilding their country. UNHCR, together with the American Refugee Committee, is building simple settlements for returnees in greatest need of housing, and providing vocational training to help them find work or create businesses.

On a visit to Dadaab on Tuesday, together with Ahmed Hussen, the Canadian Minister for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Grandi spoke to refugees who were trying to decide whether to remain in Dadaab or return home to Somalia. Both Grandi and Hussen visited the repatriation 'help desk' where UNHCR carefully verifies the voluntary nature of their decision. While meeting refugees, Grandi appealed for stronger international efforts towards stabilization.

"Somalia continues to need international efforts to help rebuild infrastructure and to create security conditions for refugees to return," he said.

During his visit, Grandi heard from Somali refugees about their challenges and hopes for the future. He also met with local authorities and host community leaders.

"It's useful for me to be here to learn and hear from you, even as we continue to do our best to support you," he said, at a meeting with women and girls who are survivors of sexual and gender-based violence in Dadaab's Hagadera camp.

The women and girls displayed artwork they had been trained to make through a UNHCR-funded programme, managed by the International Rescue Committee, that supports vulnerable women. The women, who receive counselling at the center, expressed gratitude for the support they received but asked for more sewing materials so they could sell their wares, citing a lack of sufficient income-generating activities in the camp. "I can assure you that UNHCR and our partners are doing our best to use the scarce resources available to meet the most basic needs," Grandi said. He expressed his regret that donor support is diminishing at a time when refugees here still require ongoing aid.

Receiving Grandi in her modest shelter with a tin roof and a dirt floor, Ladan, a mother of five, told Grandi that conditions were tough. She was relocated after her section of the camp was closed as people left for Somalia. "I struggle to get enough food for my children as the food we used to receive was reduced by half," she said, referring to World Food Programme's ration cuts, a consequence of reduced donor funding.

Her woes were echoed by other refugees, including community leaders who met with Grandi and outlined the challenges they face in the camps. The leaders cited high numbers of school dropouts and lack of higher education, decreasing opportunities to be resettled to third countries and lack of specialized services for people with special needs as some of their challenges.

Grandi listened carefully to their concerns, particularly the need for more university education scholarships and vocational training. He was inspired by 16 high achieving students whom he met with Minister Hussen and had been awarded university scholarships under the World University Service of Canada, but regretted that hundreds of other successful high school graduates would not have the means to continue their studies.

The High Commissioner said he would continue to appeal to international donors on their behalf and work with the government of Kenya in realizing President Kenyatta's pledge to establish a vocational education center in Dadaab for both refugees and the host community.

"Our appeal to donors and hosting countries is not to give up on Somali refugees," Grandi said, noting that the World Bank had allocated US$100 million in loans in recognition of Kenya as a major refugee hosting country. Much of that investment is planned for infrastructure development and environmental rehabilitation programmes in Dadaab.

Grandi called for a departure from a dependency model of enclosed camps like Dadaab. He said he was encouraged that Kenya had signed on to be one of the 13 countries that have adopted UNHCR's new Comprehensive Refugee Response model. "In the future," Grandi said, "we will strive to adopt an approach that provides both refugees and the host community access to services, while promoting self-reliance and economic opportunities to improve their living conditions and avoid aid dependency."

Peacebuilding brings together refugees and host communities

Adjumani, 19 December 2017 – "We need our community to transform and change to a peaceful community where there should be no violent conflict," says Bosco Geri, a 28-year-old community leader in Pagirinya, a refugee settlement in the Adjumani district of northern Uganda.

Bosco was one of the participants at a community peace facilitators workshop organized by the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) in Pagirinya this past October. The workshop was the first of 6 that were scheduled to take place in neighbouring refugee settlements and nearby host communities.

Facilitated by members of Friends of Kids and Youth International (FKYI), the workshops provided skills, competence, and motivation for leaders to promote peace and harmony in their communities. They were particularly relevant for the settlements in Adjumani where inter-ethnic conflict among South Sudanese refugees prevails. In recent years, these conflicts have worsened due to the scarcity of resources that is brought with sharing land and social services between refugees and their host communities.

In Pagirinya, which hosts just over 30,000 refugees, the ongoing conflict is twofold. First, there are resource-based conflicts between locals and refugees. With only 600 locals in the nearby village, most of whom are entirely subsistence agriculture, the host community feels increasingly threatened by newcomers. Secondly, this particular settlement has a high level of domestic violence which is mostly fueled by perceived familial power imbalances and substance abuse.

This most recent workshop was the first step in engaging community leaders and members to reflect on the two manifestations of violence in their society, and to begin to explore solutions. At the end of the workshop, the participants designed a three-month action plan that will carry through until March 2018.

"There had been workshops on peacebuilding by other agencies in the settlement but the host community has not been invited to attend. For the first time ever [this] JRS peacebuilding workshop involved the host communities," says a local and camp commandant in Pagirinya, indicating why this workshop was revolutionary and unique.

Beatrice, another participant was happy to have learned how to focus on the things that bring the community together, rather than tear it apart: "…the things connecting us are the schools; even if you are in bad terms, nonetheless your children still go to the same school. The market also connects us together…and youth playing football together."

Workshop participants requested that JRS continue to facilitate community dialogue and peaceful coexistence in the region.

Reconciliation is essential to JRS's work with forcibly displaced people, and opportunities to promote peace and understanding in diverse societies are fundamental to answering Pope Francis's call to build communities of encounter and hospitality.

Web Host Builder in ASP.NET Core 2.0

I want to share something from the first chapter of my upcoming book Front-end Development with ASP.NET Core, Angular, and Bootstrap.

While reviewing and updating the code from ASP.NET Core 1.0 to version 2.0 I was faced with the challenge of how to explain what's going on in the initialization of the WebHostwhich was made much more simple and logical in ASP.NET Core 2.0 but at the cost of being more "magical."

But let's get back to basics a bit. The initialization happens inside two files:

  • Program.cs, where the WebHost is built.
  • Startup.cs, where the execution pipeline and dependencies are set up.
  • The ASP.NET Core 2.x the initialization of the WebHost in the Program.cs file is just a few lines of code:

    public class Program { public static void Main(string[] args) { BuildWebHost(args).Run(); } public static IWebHost BuildWebHost(string[] args) => WebHost.CreateDefaultBuilder(args) .UseStartup<Startup>() .Build(); }

And the code in the Startup.cs file is exactly just about configuring the request execution pipeline.

    public class Startup { public void ConfigureServices(IServiceCollection services) { } public void Configure(IApplicationBuilder app, IHostingEnvironment env) { if (env.IsDevelopment()) { app.UseDeveloperExceptionPage(); } app.Run(async (context) => { await context.Response.WriteAsync("Hello World!"); }); } }

But now you don't really understand what has happened. Especially if you have worked with ASP.NET Core 1.x where everything was much more verbose and explicit.

I bet you would be surprised to know that after this 3 lines of code you have:

  • Configured the app to use Kestrel as a web server.
  • Configured integration with IIS.
  • Specified to use the current project directory as root for the application.
  • Set up the configuration sub-system which reads settings from:
  • appsettings.json in the root of the project.
  • appsettings.{env}.json which specifies environment specific configuration.
  • Local user secrets storage for things like password and auth tokens (but only in development).
  • Environmental variables to allow for server-specific settings.
  • Command line arguments.
  • Configured to a logging sub-system to read its filters and rules from the Loggingsection of the appsettings.json file and log to the:
  • In ASP.NET Core 1.x, you had to specify everything explicitly, even adding references to a few additional Nuget packages.

All these configurations are hidden inside the CreateDefaultBuilder method. To understand better what's going on I recommend you go on the ASPNET/MetaPackages git repo and read its implementation.

How do you like this new approach? I personally like it as it declutters the code and removes all plumbing code from what is supposed to be just the creation of the execution pipeline of your application. But I admit it made my job of explaining what happens behind the scenes more difficult.

Now’s the Time to Create Your Personal Website for 2018 -- Here’s How

Nothing makes you stand out more than a personal website that showcases your education and experience, just like a standard resume would. There are a few reasons why personal resume websites are far better than traditional resumes. First of all, more and more employers are turning to the Internet in their search for new employees. You need to show up in their searches, and having a website is a great way to be able to do this.

Today we are going to talk about the benefits of a personal resume website, and how you can create your own site that is going to get noticed by potential employers.

Benefits of a personal resume website

Having a personal resume website isn't just a way to show off your computer and website building skills. There are actually numerous benefits to having your own resume website. For starters, it is going to make you seem more dynamic than other applicants who just send in digital copies of their resumes. Traditional resumes don't give potential employers the complete picture of their applicants, but you can say a lot more when you have a personal resume website. Other benefits of having a website include:

  • Be more discoverable -- These days, more and more employers and HR managers are searching online for new employees. If you have applied for a position, chances are that they are going to search your name online. Wouldn't it be nice if they were able to find your personal resume site as soon as they type in your name? Having a website makes it easier for potential employers to find you and learn more about you.
  • Gain credibility -- When you are able to show examples of work you have done in the past on your resume, it lets you really showcase your skills and talents. Using photos and videos is something that you can't do with a traditional resume, but you are free to get creative with your personal resume website. An added bonus is that potential employers are going to be able to see just how creative you are.
  • Show a willingness to work -- Creating a personal resume website involves a lot more than just putting together a site and then ignoring it. You need to maintain and update the site regularly, and you need to market and promote your site so you get noticed. This means that you are going to be doing a lot of work and learning new skills as you go, which is something that is going to be noticed by potential employers.
  • Creating your personal resume website

The first thing you need to do is get yourself a domain name. The obvious choice here is to use your name with a .com extension. You can have the domain name begin with your first or last name, adding your middle initial or name, with your first initial and last name, etc. The choice is yours. Just make sure that people are easily able to see that this is your personal resume website. If they are specifically looking for you, this is going to make it easy for them to find you.

The next step is to find the right hosting plan for your personal resume website. Check out Square Space. Some plans can be purchased for just $5 per month, and you can often buy the domain name and get hosting from the same provider. Look for a provider that offers excellent customer support. You never know when you are going to need help, and you need to know that you can get that help when you do need it. The best providers offer 24/7 customer assistance.

    3. Link your resume to a landing page

It is a good idea to create a great landing page that has a button that links to the PDF version of your resume. A great-looking landing page with a short biography and a photo that shows you or what you do can entice potential employers to want to learn more. Having the link right there makes it easy for them to find you and take a look at your full resume.

Princeton latest Ivy League school to host BDSM tutorials

Several top-tier universities host student clubs, workshops dedicated to kinky sex

Princeton University has become the latest Ivy League institution to host a club for students who seek to explore sexual desires that delve into bondage, domination, sadism and masochism, underscoring a larger trend found at many top-tier universities.

The student-led club, Princeton Plays, launched earlier this month after Princeton's student government voted to officially recognize it. It joins Harvard's "Munch," Columbia's "Conversio Virium" and Cornell's "Crunch" clubs as active student BDSM groups in the Ivy League.

Several "Sex Week" campus events at various high-profile colleges over the years have also included workshops on the sexual subculture, which can include ropes, whips, blindfolds, flogging, master-servant role play and much more.

For example, the University of Chicago's annual sex week observance typically includes a BDSM workshop. In 2014, a presentation there dubbed "Taste of Kink" gave students an opportunity to explore "sensations that can be generated by floggers, rope, electricity and more." Likewise, in 2016, the university hosted a "sexual pain" workshop and BDSM tutorials. And earlier this year it hosted "Intro to rope bondage."

Also earlier this year, at the University of Michigan, an "Ins and Outs of Kink" workshop included "introductory kink and BDSM concepts." Workshops on BDSM at that university date back to at least 2014.

"Kinky Trojans" is the name of a BDSM club at the University of Southern California. Late last month, it hosted a meeting on "kinky toys of all kinds: impact, bondage, a bit of edge play, you name it," according to its Facebook page.

Meanwhile, BDSM at the Ivy Leagues is in full swing.

In 2015, Harvard University hosted a workshop as part of its sex week titled "Work Hard, Fuck Hard: The Guide to BDSM in the College Dorm Room." And just last month Harvard hosted a workshop called "Unleashed: Kink 101" as part of its sex week events.

Also last month at Columbia, its "Conversio Virium" student members were offered a "hands-on rope bondage" workshop, according to its website.

Cornell's "Crunch" club meets Tuesdays, according to its website.

The newest Ivy League BDSM group, Princeton Plays, aims to "provide a safe space for students interested in non-traditional relationships" and "to promote values of sexual inclusivity and affirm that all types of safe and consensual activity between individuals is valid," according to The Daily Princetonian, which reported on its launch earlier this month.

The Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Student has also recognized the group, which hopes to meet twice a month, The Princetonian reported. With that, the group will now have access to some funding from the student government and may reserve university rooms for their meetings.

The College Fix contacted the Princeton Undergraduate Student Government and Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Student via email to determine if the group would use university facilities for their BDSM activities. Neither replied to the emails.

Members of Princeton Plays said in The Princetonian that the group "hopes to provide a safe space for students interested in non-traditional relationships … to promote values of sexual inclusivity and affirm that all types of safe and consensual activity between individuals is valid."

In an interview an anonymous member discussed how the group started: "Through conversation, we kinda realized that we wanted a space for this on campus, more than what was out here, which was nothing."

The College Fix contacted Ivy Truong, who reported on the new club for The Princetonian, to see if she could convince members from Princeton Plays to comment on the group's intentions. Truong replied that the group declined to offer comment to The Fix.

    White House website gets face-lift

The White House says the updated site features a more user-friendly design and more intuitive search capabilities, as well as a cleaner and more elegant display.

The Trump administration says the new website will save taxpayers $3 million annually. Officials say the earlier version of WhiteHouse.gov was built using the same infrastructure as the website for President Barack Obama's White House, which cost $6 million a year to maintain. The new website, which was developed by an in-house White House team with help from an outside vendor, will cost 60 percent less, officials said.

Men plead guilty to creating 'botnet' used to crash the web

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Three men pleaded guilty to creating a "botnet" known as Mirai that was used to paralyze chunks of the internet in 2016.

Paras Jha, Josiah White and Dalton Norman admitted to one count of conspiracy in plea agreements filed earlier this month. Federal prosecutors in Alaska and New Jersey said Wednesday that the men created a collection of hundreds of thousands of computers and internet-connected devices — including routers, webcams and other devices — infected with malware that they controlled.

A broad "denial of service" attack waged using the Mirai botnet knocked services such as Twitter and Netflix offline in October 2016. Prosecutors said they don't believe the three men were responsible for that attack, as Jha had already posted the code for Mirai to online criminal forums.

Jha, 21, of Fanwood, New Jersey, and Norman, 21, of Metairie, Louisiana, also pleaded guilty to a separate conspiracy charge for using another powerful botnet for a 'clickfraud' scheme, used to artificially generate advertising revenue by making it appear that a real user clicked on an online ad.

Jha, a former Rutgers University computer science student, also pleaded guilty Wednesday in a New Jersey federal court to a computer fraud charge for allegedly executing a series of attacks from 2014 through 2016 that paralyzed the university's networks, often during high-stress times such as mid-term or final exams.

Jha's attorney, Robert Stahl, said Jha "is a brilliant young man whose intellect far exceeded his emotional maturity" and that he is "extremely remorseful and accepts responsibility for his actions." He said the guilty pleas "are the first step in his evolution into adulthood and responsibility."

A prominent cybersecurity journalist, Brian Krebs, had outed Jha and White back in January as likely suspects involved in creating the Mirai botnet.

White, 20, of Washington, Pennsylvania, and Norman could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday.

The investigation originated in Anchorage after some internet-connected devices in Alaska were discovered to have been affected by the Mirai malware.

Bill Walton, a special agent who oversees the Anchorage FBI's Cyber Crime unit, said the botnet's name is a reference to a Japanese anime called Mirai Nikki, which loosely translated into English means "future diary."

"The co-conspirators were all just a fan of that particular anime," Walton said.

Cloudbric Partners with Trendhosting To Deliver Website Security to Central Europe

December 11, 2017 -- Cloudbric Partners with Trendhosting To Deliver Website Security to Central Europe

Through the opening of a new IDC (data center) in Nuremberg, Cloudbric will be extending its website security and WAF service to Germany and Central Europe in a strategic partnership with Trendhosting, a major player in the hosting sector in the region.

While the repercussions of recent cyberattacks are felt across European countries, many businesses either lack the time, personnel, or resources to effectively take actions to prevent cybersecurity incidents from occurring. In Germany, the digital association Bitkom reported that close to 70% of companies were subject to cybercrimes such as data theft over the past two years. This has propelled the need for an accessible, reliable, preventive security solution.

Among the current cybersecurity offerings in the market, WAFs offer the necessary protection that companies need to thwart common cyberattacks and protect against the theft of data. The partnership between Cloudbric and Trendhosting will connect German users to Cloudbric and to those in Central Europe, allowing for more convenient and affordable access to Cloudbric's website security services, including its award-winning WAF for websites.

Cyber threats are a huge concern for online businesses, so organizations specifically look for security solutions with the ability and effectiveness to combat modern threats, and in Central Europe these solutions will be critical in combating cybercrime. Cloudbric's advanced technology, more specifically its unique logic-based detection engine, generates one of the lowest false positives in the industry.

TJ Jung, VP of Product & Technology, said, We share the same commitment with our partners in providing the highest quality of service, ensuring that website security is accessible to all. For this reason, in a region as large and as varied as Europe, we've opened new doors through partnerships to extend our WAF service to a greater consumer base. Companies are required to incorporate measures for ensuring information is handled in a confidential manner and protected from cyberattacks. We are glad that Cloudbric can be of great help."

Mustafa Beciragic, CTO of Trendhosting, stated, We like how Cloudbric's firewall engine focuses on performance and commits to low false positive rates. This matched our main objective to deliver a high performance platform to our customers, especially during this time of rising security requirements."

The IDC in Nuremberg marks the launch of Cloudbric's fourth data center on the European continent. Cloudbric is anticipating to open additional IDCs across Europe and other regions within the next year.

Which Hosting is Best for Startups?

When in qualm, shared hosting is a good place to initiate. It is not just wallet-friendly but also comes loaded with all the tools that businesses need to triumph.

When choosing a hosting provider for your startup, consider the features that resonate with your company's goals. A reliable shared hosting package will include limitless storage space and unmetered bandwidth, a free domain name along with some additional perks. You must also consider reliability, automatic backups, and worthy customer support. Other bonuses that are offered are site builder, e-commerce tools, and marketing credits.

    The Recompenses of Shared Hosting

Most of the shared hosting services offer modest, one-click installation/management options for their servers. This makes it easy to set up a basic WordPress, Joomla or Drupal blog or website. However, the possibilities provided are usually narrow to whatever the hosting provider decides to support. Shared Hosting packages bring along with it a lot of advantages. Few of the benefits are listed below:

Thus, this type of hosting is appropriate for personal blogging. a small business or a personal website. Shared hosting plan costs usually start at around $3.33/pm.
  • The hosting company is generally accountable for server administration and maintenance.
  • Customers are provided with a control panel (cPanel) that aids in easy website maintenance.
  • Hosting providers offer multiple email addresses at your own domain. You should also have the liberty to have more than one database.
  • Shared hosting plans come with round the clock management, maintenance and technical support which offers uptime reliability similar to plans like Dedicated and Virtual Private Servers (VPS).

Amazon Web Services can now deliver cloud services to government clients

Online retailer arm gets quality certification from MeitY

    Bengaluru, December 7:

Amazon Web Services (AWS) today announced that Amazon Internet Services Private Ltd (AISPL), an Indian subsidiary of the Amazon Group that undertakes the resale and marketing of AWS Cloud services in India, has achieved full cloud service provider (CSP) empanelment and successfully completed the STQC (Standardisation Testing and Quality Certification) audit from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) for cloud services delivered from the AWS Asia Pacific (Mumbai) Region.

This certification sees AISPL join a list of approved providers that meet pre-defined government standards of quality, availability, and security. With 52 global security certifications, attestations, assurance programmes, and quality audits already achieved, such as ISO 9001, SOC1, SOC2, SOC3, and more, AWS is the first global cloud service provider to earn this status in India. MeitY advises government bodies and departments to procure cloud services only from the empaneled and audit-compliant CSPs.

"We are pleased that AWS is the first cloud computing portfolio to announce full empanelment by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The government has been driving the mission to promote e-governance for empowering citizens, and enabling access to digital and cloud-enabled services for its nodal agencies and public sector organisations. The empanelment of the AWS Cloud is paving the way for innovation so that government bodies can serve citizens more effectively, achieve scientific breakthroughs, reach broader constituents, and invest more time and resources into their core missions," said Peter Moore, Regional Managing Director, Amazon Web Services, Public Sector - Asia Pacific based in AWS Singapore office.

"We are excited to deepen our engagement with Central, State, and local governments, and public sector bodies in India to offer them the broadest suite of cloud services, and a transformational approach to accelerate the deployment of digital services in the country," he added.

    Terms and conditions

Starting today, government customers can develop their own terms and conditions to procure AWS Cloud services. The empanelment process includes compliance with new global security standards and guidelines ISO 27017 and ISO 27018. AWS public sector customers in India include Andhra Pradesh State Skill Development Corporation, Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), CSC e-Governance Services (set up by the Ministry of Electronics & IT), Gujarat Technical University, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), and Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati.

Since the launch of AWS Asia Pacific (Mumbai) Region in June 2016, more than 120,000 active customers including Tata Motors, NDTV, Lupin, Future Group, and Shoppers Stop have adopted AWS Cloud for a broad range of applications such as e-governance applications, website hosting, big data analytics, mobile applications, e-commerce platforms, mission critical business applications such as SAP, Oracle, and Microsoft, among many other use cases.

7 Most Useful Web Hosting Services

One-size-fits-all is a lie. The Earth is technically big enough to hold everyone, and yet you can't get enough armrest space. This is equally true of web hosting. When you're trying to fire up a personal domain, or a new business, you can put it basically anywhere. The trouble is, up-time, hosting features, accessibility, and support all factor in to change how good a host is. Then, there's the traffic concerns. If your website gets popular, a lot of traffic can be tough for a basic hosting package, and some hosting sites will either throttle you, overcharge you, or allow your site to crash. All of which costs you visitors.

To circumvent disaster, you need to have a hosting company with the infrastructure and survival rate to (almost) never fail. There's no such thing as bombproof, but there is a wide gap between decent and secure. Once that's been wrapped up, you must consider what kind of site you're going to be hosting, so as to get the right bandwidth to fit. A streaming site with video content needs more than a text and photo job. If monetization is on your mind – and it should be – you also should be looking at security features and interfacing with outside vendors.

That means flexibility, technical guru-hood, customer care that borders on mothering, and hardware that can't stop, won't stop. Plus, hacking security, to say nothing of prices that meet your needs without skewing your bottom line. Get down to it and only the 7 best web hosting companies are worth your time.

    1&1 11 web hosting 960x426 7 Most Useful Web Hosting Servicesvia hostingtalk.it

Starting off with unlimited space for an unlimited number of sites, 1&1 wants you to have all the storage your Lonely Island fan blog or start-up business(es) could want. 500 MySQL databases are allowed, should you need to store and parse your information, or distribute it to your faithful visitors. You won't need to know any HTML or CSS heading in, since there are click-to-build interfaces. Costs are laughably low, particularly for the fairly robust feature set. Service is good, if not anything to tell your mama about.

HostGator HostGator web hosting 960x582 7 Most Useful Web Hosting Servicesvia infosite.in

There's quite a few hosting plans to whet your whistle with the Gator, and each one comes bursting with features and accessories. The primary goal here is clearly business hosting, as monetization and professionalism abound. At every turn you'll be given tools to improve and enhance your web presence. The site building tools are good, though you're always going to do better by doing it with a CMS like WordPress. Among stress tests, HostGator was found to have among the best uptime in the business, which is absolute music if you're hoping for reliability. Overall, novices will have the easiest time here.

    iPage via blue1hosting.com

The website iPage has been around since 1998, proving it's a survivor, if nothing else. Though it's an early adopter, iPage hasn't made waves until recent years, as it lived largely as a quaint, boutique domain register and hosting gig. In 2009, it proved that it was ready to emerge from the chrysalis, giving you a lot of low-cost, high-value additions. Unlimited in almost every way that counts, the technical support and customer care could be quicker and more comprehensive. That's going to reduce the utility to the technically backward. Those who know how to handle their own site will be fine here. Those who are fresh into the pool should flounder a bit with a more user-friendly choice.

    Bluehost via winningwp.com

Bluehost was once the thinking person's web hosting service. Then it got split up a little too heavily, with email support being spotty, and other upstarts hopping in, giving easier access with a less clunky interface. Bluehost tends to be very good for those starting out, but will quickly expect you to pay increasing fees to keep your site up – whether it's getting traffic and using resources or not. For hosting and mail, to say nothing of shopping, Blue is still among the best. It's when you get into the back and start to see how poorly some of the accessories work – to say nothing of sudden à la carte pricing for basic items – that the bloom fades. The more basic items you need, the more you'll pay.

    GoDaddy via nypost.com

There's little fault to be found with the web hosting giant. It has everything you could possibly need, interfaces with every system, can work with any design layout, and has more ways to plug in, hook up, and get on than any other service. It's also more costly than all but the best, and GoDaddy is not shy about upping the ante once sure you're unable to escape. The ability to go as big as you want and know the service can grow with you is helpful, though unnecessary for 99.99% of those that use it. Deeper than the deepest ocean and wider than the sky, GoDaddy has everything and then some, for anyone who doesn't mind the weighty gate fee.

    InMotion via inmotionhosting.com

Quick and dirty is the way that InMotion works best. It has a lot of parts you can add into your website, but each one operates oddly and has a separate login, which can quickly make changing or navigating your site frustrating. There's no hosting for WordPress, the most popular CMS in the world, which is going to hamper you if you were going to use that on the back end. Though clunky, it has as many great additions as big dogs like GoDaddy. The uptime numbers are great, and it is incredibly easy to use for both hosting and building a page. You'll even find their money back guarantee is better than average. If it weren't for the clunky, insurmountable execution, InMotion would be the best option around.

    JustHost via payetteforward.com

The name is appropriate, as the goal here is to offer a skeleton hosting structure. It's up to you to hang your meaty website all over it. That means you'd better understand FTP, and know some coding. It doesn't have managed WordPress hosting, which is a major issue for anyone reliant on the world's most popular content manager. The uptime is toward the low end of the spectrum, which is not ideal for anyone hoping to make money, or create a social experience. It also tends to get obnoxious trying to upsell you other products. It's a balance of price and usability that barely makes the cut.

Amazon introduces host of new IoT services

forecast iot platforms growthBI Intelligence See Also The Internet of Everything — $12.6 trillion ROI expected over the next decade [SLIDE DECK] THE INTERNET OF THINGS 2017 REPORT: How the IoT is improving lives to transform the world THE INSURANCE AND THE IoT REPORT: How insurers are using connected devices to cut costs and more accurately price policies

This story was delivered to BI Intelligence IoT Briefing subscribers. To learn more and subscribe, please click here.

At its Amazon Web Services (AWS) re:Invent conference last week, Amazon announced a number of new services for its AWS IoT platform.

AWS IoT is one of the leading cloud-based IoT platforms, and Amazon is looking to expand its capabilities to meet more of its potential clients' needs, ranging from wider edge computing to fast scaling to device management.

Embracing more of the IoT stack — the various components a company needs to use an IoT solution — makes Amazon a more attractive IoT partner and could help it grow in the vital IoT platforms space.

Here are the biggest new services and capabilities coming to AWS IoT, and how they'll impact the platform:

  • New and improved onboarding and device management. Given the sheer numberof IoT devices that companies may use, bringing them all online can be an ordeal for a company's workforce. Intel recently introduced a new initiative to make device onboarding simpler, and Amazon is similarly looking to remove this barrier to IoT growth by enabling devices to be added to AWS more seamlessly. Also, though AWS IoT already offered some device management services, it's expanding on those with features to allow customers to group and track connected devices through the AWS IoT console, find devices nearly in real time, and remotely update software.
  • Expanded IoT security and analytics services. Early next year, Amazon will introduce AWS IoT Device Defender, a continuous auditing service to make sure connected devices are kept secure. Additionally, it's expanding its IoT analytics capabilities by offering a fully managed service that cleans, processes, stores, and analyzes data from IoT devices to provide users with simple reports and visualizations of data they can use to make decisions.
  • Edge-based machine learning capabilities. Amazon introduced AWS Greengrass earlier this year to allow companies to use AWS services on edge computing systems that process data close to where it's created rather than using a cloud server. Now, Amazon is rolling out machine learning capabilities for AWS Greengrass systems, which will let companies train systems to use IoT data to make decisions in real time based on past observations. Systems will be able to leverage machine learning insights without needing constant connectivity, allowing for more efficient decision-making and greater automation.
  • Amazon will likely continue to improve on AWS IoT, making it a more compelling choice for companies as a full-service platform, rather than just a cloud analytics option. This will give the company a chance to grab an even larger slice of the critical IoT platforms market, which BI Intelligence projects to grow to more than $300 billion by 2021.

BI Intelligence, Business Insider's premium research service, has compiled a detailed report on the evolving IoT platform ecosystem that:

  • Explains the coming growth of the IoT platforms.
  • Profiles a number of leading platforms.
  • Highlights the central role platforms play in the IoT.
  • Looks to the future of the IoT platforms market.

Infowars host Alex Jones' 'vile' anti-lesbian rant

Warning: This article contains content that may disturb some people

Right wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones has gone on what many are calling a "vile" anti-lesbian rant, accusing them of wanting to "torture" women.

The InfoWars show host went into graphic detail about how they want to "get you in a dungeon" and "eat your brain".

InfoWars is a notorious, far-right conspiracy theory media outlet that has grown rapidly in popularity over the last few years.

The website, led by Jones, has insisted the US government controls the weather, turns frogs gay and is behind several terrorist attacks and mass shootings - even going so far as to claim the young victims of the Sandy Hook massacre were "child actors".

"Most of the so-called liberal lesbians and all these groups, they just want to have the guy with the duck's ass haircut and the James Dean outfit," he says.

"They want to be the ones slapping the girls around. And statistically, it shows it. I'm not blaming all lesbians, but it shows that most of these butch lesbians, they want to be the guy smacking the hot chick around. They think that's manly."

Jones says it's because "no man will do that to them".

"If they can't find a man to smack them around, well they found them a girl going to do it real good," he says.

"Knock them upside their head, and have 50 Shades of Grey about the sexy rich guy that's going to chain you up."

The bizarre rant then deviated into how the "liberal lesbians" enjoy eating brains.

"They're going to put that devil mask or that piggy mask on. They're going to say, 'Now I'm going to torture you for about six weeks, so start begging for your mommy and your daddy.' That's the liberals. They want to get you in a dungeon," he says.

"They want to strap you down and take a buzz saw and cut the top of your head off like a pumpkin and pull it off and get a little spoon and go, 'I'm going to eat your brain now!'

"I'm going to eat your cerebral cortex last, because I've got power. I love Satan, and I'm going to suck you dry, and I'm going to torture you to death."

His speech has been attacked by the LGBT community, who have labelled it "homophobic, riddled with stereotypes, and just plain wrong".

Evan Turner, Noah Vonleh Hosting Winter Coat Drive to Help Kids in Need

Winter is coming in the Northwest, and Trail Blazers players Evan Turner and Noah Vonleh are stepping up to do their part for under-served youth in the area. The two are hosting the Blazers' annual winter coat drive in partnership with Fred Meyer, and donations will be distributed by Portland-area nonprofits to those in need. The pair will be at the Beaverton Fred Meyer on Walker Road at 3:00 pm Sunday, Dec. 3, to collect donations.

The Portland Patch News Desk caught up with Turner to talk about his connection to the community:

"It's important to me that the kids in our community are prepared for winter" Turner said. "Fred Meyer stores, along with Noah and I, invite Trail Blazers fans to join us in helping to keep Portland youth of all ages warm and dry. We've made it convenient by placing donation bins at 14 participating Fred Meyer locations all over the area. The season of giving has begun, so let's all participate."

Vonleh shares similar passion for lending a helping hand:

"I am proud to be teaming up with Fred Meyer this holiday season to collect and distribute winter coats to those in need," said Vonleh. "Fred Meyer is a tireless supporter of the Portland community and its commitment to giving back is something that I admire. As a professional athlete, I think it is important that I utilize my platform to give back to the local community and I am so honored to be a part of such a good cause to benefit the Portland community."

This will be the eighth year of the coat drive. A hashtag, #FredMeyerCoatDrive, allows fans to share their donations on social media and be entered for possible prizes. Donations are accepted through December 17.

You can also visit the Fred Meyers donation web site to find all of their coat drive locations.

3 Tips for Hosting an Outstanding Church Dinner or Potluck

For many households, dinnertime has become TV time or phone time. We have forgotten the dinner table's power to shape society. Many churches lack confidence when it comes to sharing the faith, but by gathering for a shared meal, churches can strengthen their bonds of fellowship and reach unchurched people. Here are a few ways to turn your regular potlucks and church dinners into what I call the "Jesus table"—a meal that brings outsiders into the presence of Christ.

    1. Set an Abundant Table

Jesus spent a lot of time around tables. Scholar John Dominic Crossan says that to watch a day in the life of Jesus would be to watch him mostly healing and eating. Other scholars, like Christine Pohl, agree, pointing out that Jesus' supper times were consistent and prominent parts of his mission. Think of how often the Gospels record instances of Jesus reclining at dinner tables with scurrilous people. He did it so often that he garnered the reputation of being a glutton, a drunkard, and a friend of sinners (Luke 7:34). But this was part of our Lord's divine strategy to bring the kingdom of God to earth and into the hearts of those far from God.

Hosting tip: Serve food in a way that reveals the abundance and generosity of the gospel, and expect people to be drawn to Christ.

Those dinners were intended by Jesus to be an invitation to faith. Jesus embedded the gospel into the dinner table event. That is our history and our heritage. When we prepare a community meal, it should be a colorful vision of the gospel.

Since the meal carries this theological significance, don't settle for a mediocre feast. I'm not saying you have to cook gourmet food, but what you prepare should be delicious and bountiful! I suggest cooking a large entrée and then asking the rest of the group to bring complementary side dishes, salads, rolls, and desserts to the dinner. Create a buffet table with tablecloths and centerpieces surrounded with numerous platters and colorful trays of food. Not only is that an inexpensive way to provide a large meal, it is truly impressive—just like the gospel!

    2. Invite the Needy

The warmth of Christ in our hearts gives us a wonderful sense of fellowship. That warmth is so wonderful that some people never want to leave their Christian friends to reach outsiders. It is a good thing that the people who invited you and me into the family of God did not think that way. Every church must be reminded from time to time to include people who have little to give back.

Hosting tip: Invite some people to your dinner who are not likely to be invited to other tables. Eat with them rather than only serving them.

Most churches have a greater opportunity to do that than they realize. Virtually every town in America has neighborhoods where people are struggling economically. Underprivileged populations aren't hard to find. Often they are only a few blocks from your church. They might be within the shadow of your church building. What would it be like for a church to host a dinner for these forgotten neighbors?

From the beginning, Christian food events were designed to include the poor. In Luke 14:12–14, Jesus instructed his hearers to forgo inviting people to a banquet who could return the favor. Instead, he told them to invite people who could not pay them back. During the Apostolic era, Christ's followers understood that the table was a sacred place. To talk about the life of Jesus during those meals was tantamount to welcoming guests into the life of Christ. That was especially true when it came to inviting those whom the rest of the world had ignored or neglected.

    3. Expect Jesus to Show Up

Jesus loved the dinner table. The early church believed Jesus might show up in physical form during dinners like he did to the disciples on the road to Emmaus or to those behind locked doors in the upper room. Those biblical events created a sense among early Christians that he might appear again. In some early Agape feasts, they even set an empty chair for him. They anticipated the presence of their resurrected Lord.

Hosting tip: Expect Jesus to show up and do some unexplainable things for your guests.

We need to recover the idea that Christ will show up if we set up a Jesus table. Most of us give assent to the theology of omnipresence, but we do not anticipate the presence of Jesus when we gather for a meal. But what happens in any meal hosted by Christ followers is about far more than food and fellowship; it is a sacred invitation to have dinner with Jesus. Consider how compelling that offer is! To have dinner with Jesus is to have dinner with the Healer, the Comforter, the Savior, and the Provider. A Jesus table is a portal between the house of God and the house of humanity. That is no small opportunity.

Revelation 3:20 reveals a picture of Jesus knocking on the door of people's lives. What happens if they open? "I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me." Jesus still wants to eat with us. That is the heartbeat of a Jesus table; that is the divine spark that will be present in your banquet room. So set an abundant table, invite the unlikely, and sit to eat with them. Jesus will show up. He loves to dine with us.
