5 Reasons to Opt for Linux Web Hosting

why-you-should-host-your-websites-with-linux-hosting

For a rookie webmaster, choosing a web hosting plan may be a challenging task. What web hosting environment to choose is an especially critical decision to arrive at. FreeBSD, Microsoft, and Linux are a few web hosting environment options available in the market.

The foremost step for web developers and designers is to pick between two variants:

  • Shared Web Hosting
  • Dedicated Web Hosting
  • It should be noted that between the two, dedicated web hosting is a better choice. Apps and websites hosted on a dedicated hosting environment are more stable and secure, but require far more technical prowess to develop and maintain – which rules it out for most beginners. Moreover, due to the higher cost associated with dedicated servers, web developers and designers are often tempted to opt for shared hosting.

Shared web hosting is mainly used for managing websites and CMS applications such as WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, etc. It is highly preferred owing to easy management and affordability. Having stated that, security and stability are formidable concerns in shared web hosting. Hence choosing the right platform is key.

Microsoft Windows is undoubtedly the market leader in the realm of desktops and PCs, but when it comes to shared web hosting, Linux rules the market. Inspired by UNIX, Linux is the most preferred operating system for servers, supercomputers and other big-iron systems. Linux is affordable and scalable.

Unless someone's business is centered around the Microsoft ecosystem and/or their technical skills are strongest in ASP/.NET, there's no particular reason to miss out on the Linux web hosting environment.

Here are top five reasons to choose Linux over others:

Server Management Tools is a Big Plus

web-control-panels-to-manage-linux-servers20 Open Source/Commercial Control Panels to Manage Linux Servers

Thanks to the number and quality of tools at one's disposal, automating tasks and monitoring network traffic on Linux web hosting OS is a cakewalk. While Windows also offers several professional tools, Linux scores above its rival. This stems from its open-source ecosystem which contributes to its consistent innovation.

Created by open-source evangelist Linus Torvalds, Linux enjoys the support of the largest community of dedicated developers. These developers continually add new sets of tools, incrementally making the Linux web hosting environment secure and robust.

Supported by the Largest Community of Developers

helpful-linux-communities-reddit-linux4 Helpful Communities For New Linux Users

Supported by the largest and most active software community means timely updates and security patches. When it comes to fixing vulnerabilities in a jiffy, Linux is ahead of its competitors. The Linux platform boasts of a strong network of of groups and forums dedicated to crowdsourcing ideas and solutions which allows developers and webmasters to receive prompt support.

For instance, if you are stuck trying to install a new program, all you need to do is post your query online. In no time, solutions will pour in, thus enabling you to resolve the issue without having to pay a hefty support fee. This works well for people who are operating on narrow budgets. In addition to this, people who have a limited understanding of web hosting and servers can opt for commercial support from the distros.

    Absence of licensing fee

open-source-history-why-did-linux-succeedOpen Source History: Why Did Linux Succeed?

Linux servers are relatively inexpensive to run because of the huge number of free tools available. A lot of the services and tools that are required to setup, configure and manage are available for free in the Linux world, whereas their Windows counterparts mostly require a licensing fee.

    Easily, Efficiently Scalable

Microsoft has also announced the most recent version of its SQL server for Linux. This step from a competitor, symbolizes the efficiency and scalability of a Linux hosting environment. Linux OS as we know is compatible with most scripting languages – PHP, Ruby on Rails, Python, and Java and database software like MySQL. It also happens to be a flexible web-hosting solution and does not compromise on the speed and security features of a website or application hosted on the server.

Google, Facebook, Instagram, all are Linux fans

How To Clone A Website From Another Host To DreamHost Using The ManageWP Clone Tool

Migrating your website from one web hosting company to another can be a challenge. It sounds like a lot of downloading, uploading, importing and exporting is required to get it done. And if you mess up on any one of the steps, you end up with a site that doesn't work. Ugh!

That's where ManageWP can help. ManageWP has created a backup tool that has integrated a Clone/Migration feature, and with just a few clicks your website can be moved to DreamHost.

Let's show you how easy it is:

    1. The first step is to add your source website and DreamHost website to ManageWP. This requires you to install the ManageWP Worker plugin on both WordPress installations. You can do this in the WordPress dashboard by going to Plugins > Add New. Search for ManageWP Worker. Click Install Now, then Activate. Now add both websites to ManageWP. (You can also have ManageWP install the plugin for you—you'll just need to give ManageWP your admin username and password for each WordPress site.)

    2. The second step is activating the backup tool on the source website and waiting a couple of minutes for the backup to get created, then tap the orange Clone button.

    3. The third step is selecting your DreamHost website as a destination—and now you have just finished 99 percent of the job! This can be WordPress running on DreamHost shared, VPS or DreamPress hosting.

You are also able to track the cloning process progress:

    Progress DreamHost.png

    4. When cloning is over, check your destination website by tapping "here". If you are using DreamPress, you may need to click to purge the cache (at the top of the WordPress dashboard) if it still displays a default WordPress theme rather than the one from the source website.

    Clone Completed DreamHost.png

    Purge Varnish:

    Purge Varnish.png

All right, you're done! See, it was pretty easy.

If you don't already have a ManageWP account, it's pretty straightforward to get one. Just follow the steps on ManageWP.com HomePage to sign up. And you're in luck—it's free to add unlimited websites!

Cloud on ground: How hosting data locally can save businesses in a recession

If you're a business owner, it might not matter to you wh ere exactly in the cloud your data is stored. Once you've gone beyond saving your relevant information in a notebook under your bed to using a software or website germane to your business, then it shouldn't matter whether the servers that host your data are in the United Kingdom or Nigeria right? Well, not really.

Research shows that it really does matter; not only does hosting data internationally come with attendant risks and challenges, hosting data locally keeps data safer, makes technology more accessible to organizations and boosts Gross Domestic Product, GDP and Foreign Exchange. For a country that is going through a recession, this is good news.

Little wonder the Chief Executive Officer of Rack Centre, Mr. Tunde Coker was literally on cloud nine when the preached the gospel of 'Cloud on Ground' to select ICT journalists in Lagos recently. Excerpts:

    By Laju Iren

RACK Centre is planning to launch Cloud on Ground. What does it mean and how does it work?

In the last ten years, technology solution providers have been talking about cloud computing and how data could be stored in the cloud for safety and easy accessibility, but today, technology is evolving and we at Rack Centre concluded that data could be stored locally in the cloud, without having to host the servers in foreign countries.

Yes we are always focused on our key business, which is collocating data but we felt it a better business sense to build cloud locally that will enable more organisations store their data in the cloud locally, without facing the risk or challenges of hosting data outside Nigeria. This exactly led to the concept, Cloud on Ground, which means cloud is here with us and no longer hosted outside the shores of Nigeria as it used to be.

    Comprehensive market place

So Cloud on Ground relates to a whole ecosystem of cloud provision capability, where various cloud solutions from West Africa, are hosted in Rack Centre in Nigeria. So Cloud on Ground is a market place where people have access to do different kinds of businesses. It is a comprehensive market place and an ecosystem for all the key facilities required to consume cloud services, while the data sits in Rack Centre in Nigeria.

The idea is not to serve only the interests of big corporate organisations, but also the interests of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). We believe it is going to transform technology in West Africa and Nigeria because it will make technology more accessible to SMEs and corporate organisations.

What benefit does 'Cloud on Ground' bring to Nigerian businesses?

Let's say we have one million SMEs in the country that would be using hot mail or other services. With some of those services being available locally, it means that what they would not have had at all before, they now have access to. If you take larger companies for instance, to actually build your own IT, you have to buy your own equipment and build your own data centre.

We are now in a stage where we are saying that you do not need to do that, you can collocate in Rack centre and also have access to other services that complement your own corporate needs. This means that you can actually go out and focus on your business and then on 'as you go' basis, you can scale both your collocation and the cloud services that you consume.

I'm using cloud here as a broad term to include access to web hosting, structure, enterprise resource planning on a shared basis; a collation of the eco system services needed in one place.

How, in your opinion can technology help bring the Nigerian economy out of its current recession?

It  will require neater, cost saving thinking  for companies to get out of this recession. And that is what we offer companies. You can save costs and get yourself out of trouble quickly by engaging rack centre.

Rack centre is the sort of underpining technology that you need to build other things on. Technology has to be accessible and cost efficient, and having collocated data centre capabilities and cloud services- those are the things that drive accessibility and cost effectiveness. There is also the process of making sure that e-

government in place. Government becomes more efficient with e-government in place. It makes it easier to curb corruption with the implementation of e-government. Also, the more companies use technology, the better. Let's not fool ourselves, we will continue to use technology that is not home grown-it's a world-wide phenomenon.

But we can have the combination of the home grown plus other expertise that we have to bring in from elsewhere to aid the growth of businesses. The more we do this, the more we build local technology capabilities and the more we find that there is growth in competencies and the businesses that provide both software, hardware and consultancy for other businesses that use technology.

It is perfectly realistic to say that in the next five years we are going to see in a growing GDP, 18 percent of it being driven by technology.

Local data hosting and the economy

Research has shown that when you invest in building a data centre, the economic impact on the economy can range from at least ten fold to a hundred fold. So if you spend ten million dollars on building a data centre for example, the impact on the local economy would be anything from 100 million dollars.

    Value chain  impact

So if the running cost is say five million dollars, the value chain impact on the economy would be about fifty million to five hundred million.

There is a cumulative impact on the economy. Local businesses also won't have to spend a lot their own data centres that may break down all the time. They can leverage on the services here, have more efficient services and focus on their core business. So that's on the data centre.

For cloud, if you imagine the trickle effect of wanting to grow but not having the investment to do so. The investment is high, so businesses might need to get bank loans if they want to establish their IT infrastructure on their own. However, if you are able to consume services on an as you need basis, there is a systemic impact on the speed of growth of the business.

By combining the collocation capabilities we have with cloud services, youre building a base has an enabling, transforming impact on the economy.

How to Choose the Right Web Hosting Provider for Your WordPress Site

Published September 26th, 2016 by WME

Navigating your way around the world of web hosting can be a treacherous process, particularly if you're not much of a tech junkie. There exists a plethora of different avenues you can venture down; some of which will lead you in a favourable direction, others that will have you fumbling around in the darkness.

If we were to draw an analogy, your web hosting provider can be likened to a storage cabinet, while your website is your collection of files. Hence, you want to invest in a 'cabinet' that is safe, reliable and well-equipped to your requirements.

These days, many users choose to set up their websites via WordPress as it is a super-simple way to make that digital transition. However, what users don't realise is that in order to ensure the safeguarding of those precious website 'files', they need to select a WordPress hosting provider that can meet their distinct needs. A great hosting company will highlight the strengths of your content, keep your website up and running at all times, and increase your rates of views and sales. A poorly chosen host, on the other hand, can do serious damage, leaving you vulnerable to security problems and reduced functionality.

There are a few important features and points to consider when choosing a WordPress hosting package.

  • The feature set: Your hosting should make the process of building and running your website a smooth and simple process on your side. Make sure that the product incorporates a full feature set that works for you, including the server access you need, admin tools and email accounts to keep things working as they should.
  • Price: It goes without saying that price is an important aspect of this decision, but it's a point worth emphasising. Many businesses end up spending a fortune on a highly secure and top speed server that may offer more than they need at an extortionate price. Compare prices and packages and be certain that you're getting the best value for your needs.
  • Speed: This is essential. Your Google ranking can suffer if your site is running too slowly, and potential customers will click away before you know it. The WordPress hosting company you choose should be able to offer you powerful hardware for strong speeds.
  • Customer service: A great support staff waiting to help you on the other side is a must-have. If any problem arises with your website, you want to be able to sort it out swiftly. The hosting company should have staff available at all times to assist you in a friendly, professional manner.
  • WordPress-specific: WordPress has its own individual set of challenges and functionality quirks, so ensure that the company you choose has plenty of experience in specifically hosting a WordPress site, rather than other types of websites.
  • Secure servers: Your hosting provider is responsible for keeping your website safe 24/7. A good host will have a set of tough security measures in place to protect your site from hackers. A hosting provider that's familiar with WordPress is especially important in this regard.
  • Finding a web host for your WordPress site is a crucial decision not to be made lightly. However, by following our expert guide, you can ensure that you find the best WordPress hosting company for your needs to therefore establish and grow your online exposure.

Liquid Web to Collaborate with City, County to Establish Tech District Presence

Michigan-based web hosting and cloud services provider Liquid Web, which recently acquired Rackspace's Cloud Sites business unit, is committed to expanding its offices to San Antonio's tech district, and the City as well as the County are on board to create monetary incentives for the company – if the company meets certain conditions.

In order to focus on Fanatical Support and serve more enterprise partners, Rackspace decided to sell its Cloud Sites branch to Liquid Web in August, but preserved the connection by welcoming its fellow cloud provider to the Rackspace Partner Network as an email reseller. This strategic move by the San Antonio-based company, which was recently acquired by Apollo, aimed at increasing its efficacy and focus on other business verticals.

"We are pleased that Liquid Web selected San Antonio as the best place to grow the business unit it recently acquired from homegrown company Rackspace," stated Mayor Ivy Taylor in a news release. "The company's decision is a testament to San Antonio's strengthening downtown tech district and to our developing, robust tech ecosystem."

San Antonio Economic Development Foundation President and CEO Jenna Saucedo-Herrera said the San Antonio community is committed to growing a robust and flourishing tech ecosystem and that the City-County collaboration sends a strong message that "San Antonio welcomes growth, innovation, and technology."

Both the City and the County will consider financially supporting Liquid Web, contingent on the company remaining in San Antonio and fueling the city's economy and job market. On Sept. 29, City Council will discuss granting Liquid Web up to $255,000 from an Economic Development Incentive Fund (EDIF) grant if the cloud company creates up to 100 jobs in the next four years. On Oct 4., the  County Commissioners will consider granting Liquid Web $150,000 from the Bexar County Innovation Fund if it remains in Bexar County for at least three years, creates a minimum of 43 new jobs, and retains 55.

"We welcome and encourage Liquid Web to grow in San Antonio," Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff stated. "The average annual salary is estimated to be over $65,000 a year. This is a great addition to the high-wage job opportunities available in our community."

According to Liquid Web CEO Jim Geiger, the company aims to become a preferred tech employer through its civic involvement, foster a strong customer-centric culture, and provide training and benefits to future employees.

"There is clearly something special happening in San Antonio, as it continues to evolve and grow its tech district," Geiger stated. "We came to realize that San Antonio would provide our company with the most ideal environment to stimulate the continued growth of Cloud Sites."

Geiger added that the company looks forward growing its product development and sales efforts, and integrating the Cloud Sites technology. "Our business case does not assume any staff reductions and, in fact, we'll be growing our presence in San Antonio," Geiger stated back in August.

"Through our community's economic development strategic plan, Forefront SA and our SA Tomorrow planning efforts, we work diligently to meet the long-term goals of talent attraction, entrepreneurial development, and high-wage and targeted industries growth," City Manager Sheryl Sculley stated in a press release. "This project with the associated high-wage jobs coming to downtown is a great example of that commitment."

Liquid Web is part of Chicago-based private equity investment firm Madison Dearborn Partners, LLC, which currently generates $100 million in annual revenue, and serves more than 30,000 customers in 150 countries. Recognized by INC Magazine as one of the 5,000 fastest growing companies in the last 10 years, the company owns and manages its own data centers and continues to evolve its services.

Cloudways choses Kyup to power its container-based hosting

Cloudways is a cloud platform offering support for organizations that need to run web-applications. Competing with other web-application hosting services like Pantheon and Pressable, Cloudways offers applications such as ecommerce, content management systems and blogging platforms.

Basically the idea is that if you're a content producer, you can rely on Cloudways to ensure that your site stays up regardless of traffic spikes, application updates or security issues. Instead of picking a standard cloud or hosting provider and doing the heavy lifting of the application-specific stuff yourself, you rely on Cloudways to do that for you.

+ Also on Network World: Elastic cloud apps are great, but how do we protect the containers that power them? +

The interesting thing here is that the standard model for hosting—for example, a Wordpress blog—is for an agency to do the design, deployment and management. Instead of a bespoke offering, Cloudways is attempting (as are the other similar players) to "productize" all of the minutiae around application hosting.

That is actually a tougher problem to solve than one would imagine. Everyone who uses one of these applications has a slightly different setup—the large range of plugins and themes available creates huge management complexity that Cloudways needs to resolve.

Cloudways and its ilk, therefore, tread a fine line. They support the platform itself, but they are not actually application developers. I've always found that with my own website this creates an issue around who is responsible for site issues: Is it a hosting issue or an application one?

A fully managed cloud hosting service for containers

Either way, moving up the value chain from raw infrastructure is a good thing, and Cloudways has done well to build a strong, scalable platform. Part of doing so has been via the use of cutting-edge technology approaches, and we see this again today with Cloudways introducing a fully managed cloud hosting service for containers.

With instant provisioned infrastructure from Kyup, Managed Container Hosting on Cloudways allows developers, designers and ecommerce store owners to deploy websites on auto-scalable infrastructure and ensures web apps continue to stay online during traffic spikes. This is a case of Cloudways taking advantage of the auto-scalability that comes with Kyup containers. It also sees them leverage quick-scaling RAM, SSD storage and dedicated IP addresses.

It is an interesting case study for Kyup, a pure container player (i.e., not containers on top of virtual machines), that is a spin-off from Siteground. According to Pere Hospital, CEO of Cloudways, there are some distinct advantages to Kyup when compared to more traditional cloud platforms:

  • Nearly instant server provisioning.
  • Instant scaling with no downtime (huge improvement over VMs).
  • Rule-based auto-scaling capabilities in the context of a single server (again with no downtime). This means a very affordable, load-balanced farm equivalent without all the hassle of elastic load balancing, auto-scaling groups, shared storage and database layer.
  • Live migration, meaning a server is instantly restarted in new physical infrastructure if the original goes down.
  • Better performance per dollar (due to containerization).
  • Hospital provides an interesting commentary on the state of the container-based hosting market:

"We think the likes of Kyup are breaking ground when it comes to the future of infrastructure. Elastichosts tried it a while ago but didn't succeed. Joyent has similar capabilities but was a tad behind. And most other players haven't done yet any significant step beyond VMs."

All apps are deployed on Cloudways ThunderStack, a hosting recipe specific to the company. On Cloudways Container Platform, the company claims that websites run 300 percent faster than deployment on other cloud platforms. It's an interesting case study that goes beyond the usual container players and delivers real benefits to end users.

5 mistakes startup owners make when choosing a web hosting service

When starting a business, having a website is vital. It doesn't matter what sector you're entering; a company website is an absolute must.

From creating direct sales and networking with industry experts, to advertising your business and offering consumers information, a dedicated site offers an unparalleled opportunity for improving business operation.

    1. Failing to test customer serviceThere are few industries where good customer service is as key as it is to web hosting.

Websites are notoriously fragile; they need regular monitoring and maintenance. If your website goes down, you could immediately start haemorrhaging money.

Case in point: when Amazon's website crashed for 40 minutes back in 2013, they lost US$5 million in profits. This is obviously an extreme example of a problem affecting a retail giant, but it does help prove the point.

Your website is useless offline, meaning every minute it spends out of service is bad for business. Web hosting services are responsible for keeping your site up and running, which means in the event of a catastrophe they must be contacted to help you solve the problem.

The responsiveness and effectiveness of their customer service will either make them worth every penny, or make you realise you've made a terrible mistake.

But, how do you test customer service if you aren't a customer yet? Simple:

  • Test their promises: Twenty-four-seven helpline? Call that helpline at 1AM and see if they're really awake. Twenty-four-hour email response? Send them a concerning technical support email and see how long it takes for them to get back to you.
  • Contact customers: Search web forums, social media and Q&A sites for customers of your chosen hosting service. Ask them about any problems they've had and how the company has reacted.
  • Read reviews: Websites such as TrustPilot offer insights to business performance through user reviews.
  • 2. Taking the free optionHere's a temptation many startup owners find hard to resist: free web hosting.

Once you've broken the bank on a great website design with impeccable functionality, it can be almost irresistible to keep costs down by using a free web hosting service. But with web hosting, you get what you pay for.

Free web hosting services come with a variety of limitations and ultimately force you to relinquish some control you really shouldn't be letting go of.

Free hosting services, such as WordPress, will put adverts of their choice on your website and there isn't a thing you can do to stop them.

You'll also receive limited customisation options, slower load times, no access to search analytics, poor security, reduced SEO functionality, an inability to run certain plugins and scripts, limited scalability and a finite amount of storage. You also don't get that valuable customer support.

Keep control, cut the shackles and limitations, and avoid free web hosting.

    3. Ignoring your individual needsLike every business, every website is unique. This means one size doesn't fit all.

When choosing a web hosting service, first consider the needs of your website. For example:

  • How much storage space do you need?
  • How many sites will you be hosting?
  • What sort of bandwidth allowance do you need?
  • What kind of processing speed do you need?
  • How much RAM does your site require?
  • What is your projected traffic?
  • If you know what your website needs, you know what you should be paying for. This helps you avoid both under and overpaying.

On the one hand, you don't want to underpay for web hosting and suffer as a result. At the same time, you shouldn't be paying out for services you don't need.

Taking the time to understand your individual needs ensures you'll get the right package for your business.

    4. Using a web host service with terrible user interfaceYou don't have to be a tech expert to own a website anymore. The geniuses behind the software have made website creation so easy, everyone can have their own personal site.

However, some web hosting services still live in the dark ages.

Before you sign up for any web hosting service —-no matter how good the package sounds— check their user interface.

If you are familiar with WordPress, you'll know the software is incredibly easy to operate and very intuitive. After only minimal tutorials and training, anyone can upload web pages and edit their site.

This is the type of software you need; it saves you time. Calling tech support every five minutes when you need to make an edit or upload a blog isn't exactly efficient.

Although rare, some hosting services still offer bizarre, overly complicated and practically unusable interfaces. Unless you are a tech expert, using a service like this is going to be frustrating.

    Don't fall into this trap.

    5. Not reading up on the restrictionsOne of the greatest lies in the modern tech world is the one about "unlimited" service.

By definition, it is impossible to offer an unlimited number of anything and in web hosting the same rule applies. As you are being hosted on physical servers, you cannot have unlimited storage, RAM or bandwidth. It isn't possible.

Similarly, web hosting services may offer restrictions such as limited email accounts, e-commerce options and ability to integrate personal software. They may also have poor backup features.

Be sure to read the terms of service before committing to a web hosting service provider. Find out what they offer — how much "unlimited" really means — and if it's enough for your site.

Does Anyone Want a Free Year of Website Hosting?

6132161194_b063565e23_oA couple weeks back I bought a deals bundle which included a free year of hosting for a website.

The offer has to be redeemed in the next 8 days, and I know I won't have a chance to use it before it expires. And so I repeat the offer I made on Twitter:

    Does anyone want it?

The offer is from SSD Page, and comes as a $47.40 credit for their $4/$6 a month plan. (You might be able to stretch it if you choose a cheaper hosting plan.)

I can't tell you anything about the company; I have not dealt with them before, and that is also stopping me from selling the hosting plan (I can't tell if it's crap or not).

But if you want to give this a go, let me know.

    Domain.com Web Hosting

Think you've got the hacking chops to breach a flagship Android phone? Google's willing to pay you to prove it. On Wednesday, the Cupertino, California-based company announced Project Zero, a contest that asks enterprising hackers to demonstrate flaws in the company's smartphone operating system in exchange for cold, hard cash.

"Despite the existence of vulnerability rewards programs at Google and other companies, many unique, high-quality security bugs have been discovered as a result of hacking contests," Google's Natalie Silvanovich wrote in a blog post. "The goal of this contest is to find a vulnerability or bug chain that achieves remote code execution on multiple Android devices knowing only the devices' phone number and email address."

Related: Top 5 Android security apps: Do they protect you?

Here's how it works: Hackers who uncover a serious security bug, exploit, or flaw in Android are encouraged to publish them on the Android issue tracker, a public forum devoted to documenting Android issues from visual glitches to wonky Wi-Fi. Posts will have to be detailed — contest participants must share a "full description" of how the exploit works with the expectation that, if verified independently, they'll be published on a public Google blog. They'll have to work on Google's branded Nexus devices, the Huawei-made Nexus 6P and LG's Nexus 5X, plus any devices running an up-to-date build of Android 7.0 Nougat. And the more, the better — reported bugs can contribute to a larger Project Zero submission at any time during the contest's six-month period, Google said.

The prizes ain't half bad. The winner of the contest takes home $200,000, while the runner-up will net $100,000. And an undisclosed number of entries will be receive a consolatory prize of $50,000. And there's no way to lose: Google said that bugs that aren't submitted during the entry period may be considered for other contests like Android Security Rewards, as well as future, as-yet-unannounced promotions.

Project Zero's impetus, Google said, was discovering bugs that would otherwise go unreported. Another motivation? Developing fixes quickly, and in some cases pre-emptively. "Our main motivation is to gain information about how these bugs and exploits work," Silvanovich wrote." There are often rumors of remote Android exploits, but it's fairly rare to see one in action. We're hoping this contest will improve the public body of knowledge on these types of exploits."

Related: Google fixes critical security flaw affecting over 900 million Android devices

More broadly, Google is hoping to dissuade unscrupulous types who otherwise might be inclined to sell exploits to the highest bidder. McAfee's Center for Strategic and International Studies estimated that the cost of cybercrime is somewhere around $160 billion a year. And as use of mobile devices has climbed to unprecedented levels, the price of so-called zero-day bugs — exploits deriving from a previously unknown vulnerability — on internet black markets has mirrored that growth. A zero-day flaw in the latest version of iOS, for example, can sell for as much as $250,000, according to Wired, and some foreign governments have reportedly paid nearly half a million dollars for comparable bugs.

"We're hoping to get dangerous bugs fixed so they don't impact users," Silvanovich said. "We're [hoping] that this contest will give us another data point on the availability of these types of exploits."

    Project Zero began Wednesday.

Why it̢۪s crucial to find the right web hosting in 2016: Our top picks

Why it's crucial to find the right web hosting in 2016: Our top picks

09/13/2016 10:30 PM by Admin in Web Hosting

Find the right web hosting in 2016

Its 2016. Businesses today are fighting tooth and nail in the online arena for maximum exposure in front of an ever-increasing audience base. And they are deploying every possible weapon in their arsenal to reach out to their customers. At the forefront is search engine marketing, followed by content and then social media. The website design and development, which is an equally important part of the mix, gets its due share of attention too.

Sadly, web hosting is often put on the backburner and most businesses try a cookie cutter approach by signing up for a hosting plan off the shelf. It just does not cut it anymore. Choosing a hosting plan on the basis of the massive discount for an annual signup, which is thrown to lure the customer in, is passé.

In fact, it would be fair to say, that choosing the wrong webhost in 2016 can be digital-hara-kiri.

Why the wrong hosting can be detrimental for your business

Before you select a web hosting service, think about your intent of doing business. Is it to get more traffic? To get more leads maybe. Is it to expand on your brand building endeavors in the offline world?

If you had a brick and mortar store, would you risk opening it in a ramshackle building in a shady neighborhood? How does that reflect on your brand, your business and your credibility?

A web host is something similar. There are good neighborhoods and bad ones. There are service providers who ensure that your site gets the speed, the bandwidth and the security it deserves and there are charlatans who'd be happy to rip you off your hard earned money, given the tiniest opportunity.

The choice is up to you. The cost of hosting is sadly not an indicator of the quality of service anymore. There is a lot more at stake here. Here are some of the ways in which a wrong web hosting company can affect your business.

You lose revenue: Every minute that your site is unavailable to your customers is a potential opportunity for your competitor to gain a new customer. Think of downtime in terms of lost revenue and lost customers. How many of those customers you lost were repeat customers who would have become brand loyal to you? Forget the downtime. Customers even hate a website that is slower than usual.

Your SEO goals are affected: Frequent downtime and slow loading websites can have a negative impact on your SEO rankings, which you may have earned painstakingly. Here's an interesting article by Moz that specifies the importance of website speed in SEO.

You risk a lapse in security: Digital security is of predominant importance for an online business. There is nothing worse than having a reputation of being lackluster with your security protocols. A good web hosting provider has multiple security systems in place including DDOS attack prevention, everyday backups and redundancy checks to ensure that your website and business critical customer data are secured from hacker and malware attacks.

These are of course, just some of the ways in which choosing a wrong website hosting company can hurt your business.

The fact is that if you are new to the online space, then it is extremely easy to be fobbed off or lured into signing up with a low quality web host.

The challenges of finding a good web host

There has been an explosion in the number of websites in the past few years. And it is all set to quadruple in the years to come. All these websites need to be hosted somewhere on the internet and there's enough room for newer and unscrupulous players to peddle their mediocre stuff.

While the top webhosting companies are forthcoming with their pricing and service related details, a shady website host may use deceptive and misleading advertising tactics to get your business and then leave you high and dry, in the event of a problem.

That's what makes it so challenging to find a good web host.

Hidden Charges: Ever seen flashing advertisements that promise you unlimited annual web hosting for $10? There are probably a million other hidden charges that are often buried so deep under the fine text that you'd be impossible to spot it until the credit card statement comes knocking on your door. Some of the ways in which the charges may be applied are, setup fees, ridiculously high renewal fees or even fees to pay for their dog's hysterectomy. You never know how it's going to hit you.

The famed 'Unlimited' Claim: The lure of being able to host a hundred or even a thousand websites on a web host for $7 a month seems like the ultimate deal. How can you better that? This advertising tactic alone, fools millions of customers each year into signing up with mom and pop outfits who rake in staggering profits. The fact is that nothing is unlimited. There are two things you need to be aware of. Unlimited is probably a fancier way of saying unmetered. It means that you can get as much bandwidth as your hardware supports. If you have subscribed for a dedicated server with a 50 Mbps port, then you can continue to transmit data at the rate of 50 Mbps. But if there's a sudden demand for more bandwidth, it will cause a traffic bottleneck which will slow down or even crash your website. The other factor is storage space. If a company claims to sell you shared web hosting with unlimited hosting space, you need to check their 'inode' limits. Inode is a technical term f or files. Every webhost that claims to have unlimited hosting space has an inode limit which can be 200,000 or more. But it's there. Once you cross this inode limit, you get an email politely informing you about this and asking you to delete files from your account. If you don't delete it, they will.

While it may seem like dog-eat-dog world out there, the fact is that with a little bit of information, some research and a bit of prudence, you can easily find a webhost that is reliable, secure, cost effective and scalable.

Some factors to consider while selecting a web host

Here are a few factors to consider before signing the dotted line with any web hosting company.

What services they provide: When it comes to web hosting, one size never fits all. Your hosting needs are business specific. What options does the web host provide? Some hosts may only offer VPS. Others will let you choose from Shared hosting, dedicated servers and managed hosting. Do your research about the pros and cons of each type of hosting to know what works best for your business.

Customer Support: While every webhost in the world will have the best pre-sales team to answer your questions, you can easily gauge their intentions from the way the sales rep interacts with you. A typical way is to push the customer to sign up for the most expensive hosting plan the company has, without explaining clearly, why it is being promoted. That is a huge red flag. Time to skedaddle. On the contrary, if a sales rep is forthcoming and explains to you the pros and cons of choosing each type of hosting rather than making ad-hoc recommendations, it may be a good sign.

Uptime: Any company that does not commit to a 99% uptime at least, is not worth it in 2016.

Scalability: If your website and your business grows, you will need more resources and scalability will be a crucial part of your expansion. Can your webhost scale the hosting plan to include more resources on-the-go?

Cost: While cost is not an indicator of quality in web hosting, you must keep your eyes out for hidden costs being sneaked under the pretext of nauseating marketing gimmicks.

Reputation: Last but not the least, one of the best ways to know if a web host is worth your money is to hear what past customers have to say about it. While it is impossible to satisfy everyone and there will be someone who's disgruntled with the service, an overall positive rating of 80% of more is considered to be good. You should also check if the business is listed with the Better Business Bureau. How long have they been in business? Keep your claws sharp.

Without further ado, here's our list of the top web hosting companies in 2016. We have done in-depth research about these companies on the basis of all the parameters that we have mentioned above. They have scored well above what we would call an ideal score. So, these guys are your best bet for any type of business hosting.

If a company has been around in business for over 20 years, they have to be doing something right. Bluehost is one of the most popular web hosting companies in the world. It is estimated that they host more than 2 million websites, a lot of which have been with the company for years, which works as a testimony to the quality of service and the top notch customer support.

They started their business with extremely pocket friendly shared hosting plans but now offer a whole bevy of service plans including Woocommerce hosting, shared hosting, WordPress hosting, vps, dedicated servers and Cloud hosting.

Despite adding to their repertoire, their most popular plan remains the shared hosting plan which offers tremendous value for money. This is a flawless plan for startups, personal websites and small to medium sized businesses who find a VPS or a dedicated server to be an overkill.

Key features: Official webhosting recommended by WordPress.org, 1 free domain for the 1st year with a shared hosting plan, feature rich cPanel, antispam solutions in cPanel, unlimited email accounts, everyday backups, 24/7 phone support and live chat, scalable, account customizations, built-in CDN, 30 day money back guarantee.

As we said before, we did a complete analysis of Bluehost on the basis of the parameters we mentioned. Here's how it scored.

Services: Bluehost provides all the services that are needed from a large webhosting company in 2016. The specialized services for e-commerce and WordPress websites in particular, are a no brainer and let you get going in just minutes.

Customer support: Top notch. All questions that we had, were answered without any pesky sales pitches or marketing gimmicks. Clear and concise answers.

Uptime: Bluehost has a 99.98% uptime for their shared hosting account. The other, more detailed services have a slightly better uptime rate making it one of the most reliable hosting companies around.

Scalability: You can upgrade to any of their hosting plans with more space or bandwidth without having to worry about moving your websites. The company has a seamless scalability plan that lets businesses move without breaking a sweat over it.

Cost: The company has very competitive pricing plans which start with $3.45/month for their most basic shared hosting plans. It is a lot cheaper than many other hosting companies, which make it an advantageous choice for startups and newbies.

Reputation: Bluehost has a near flawless reputation that has been constant over the years. The only time it faced a bit of flak was in Feb 2015 when their servers took a hit from repeated DDOS attacks. That is an incredible track record.

Final Verdict: The Best web hosting company of 2016. No second thoughts about it. → Go for it.

With some of the best shared hosting plans that offer a gaggle of features for the novice webmaster, Hostgator is our #2 pick of the best web hosting companies. But its benefits are not limited to the novices. It offers seamless scalability to dedicated and virtual private server (VPS) packages.

Key Features: Hosts more than 950000 websites, more than 10 years in business, 24/7 phone support and live chat options, 45 day money back guarantee, 1 click installation for commonly used scripts, reseller plans, dedicated WordPress hosting.

Here's how Hostgator fared in our tests.

Services: Hostgator may be more popular for their shared hosting services but the company offers some of the most reliable Virtual Private Servers and dedicated hosting services, which includes Linux, Windows and Managed servers. Their cloud hosting services offer excellent scalability for businesses looking for more firepower down the road.

Customer Support: Very knowledgeable tech support team with fast and efficient responses. We hate automated responses as much as you do. Thankfully, the Hostgator team offers personalized responses that are tailored to your situation. No pushy salesmen encountered in the pre-sales chat.

Uptime: 99.99% uptime. We tested this over a 6 month period and Hostgator was not down for even a single minute. That is very impressive.

Scalability: With an array of services to choose from and a very helpful customer support team, you should have no problems upgrading to a dedicated server with Hostgator. Also, their dedicated accounts are priced very competitively.

Cost: Hostgator is among the most pocket friendly web hosting companies in the world currently. If you are a cash strapped professional, then get ready to be blown away at the pricing and the features you will get.

Reputation: Over 95% positive customer rating which is exceptional for any company in the web hosting business. And to have maintained that for 10 years is no mean feat.

Final Verdict: The only reason why Hostgator rates behind Bluehost is because it has been in business for a decade whereas Bluehost has been around for 20 years. Otherwise, it is an equally good web hosting service with some great features and exceptional value. → Go for it.

What started as a one employee outfit in 2007 is today one of the top 3 web hosting companies in the world, hosting more than 450,000 domains around the world. SiteGround.com offers some very robust features for both shared hosting customers as well as webmasters looking for more power. They have datacenters in Europe and Asia Pacific, which is a neat addition to an otherwise common feature interface among hosting providers.

Key Features: Free domain, free setup and transfers (annual billing only), 99.9 percent uptime guarantee, Cloudflare CDN, Daily backups, unlimited MySQL databases and bandwidth, cpanel with SSH access.

Services: Siteground, like most other web hosting providers harps more on their shared hosting plans, because that's the most popular service preferred by small to medium sized websites. They call it the Startup plan, the GrowBig Plan and the GoGeek plan. They also have optimized WordPress hosting plans.  But their VPS plans and their cloud hosting services are equally good, if not better. So, if you ever want to look beyond shared hosting, these guys have just the thing for you.

Customer Support: Extremely friendly and helpful customer support team. One of the first teams that we have interacted with who do not direct you to online tutorials even if you pop a CMS related question at them. If you are a newbie learning the ropes of WordPress, these guys can be a real plus on your side.

Uptime: During our tests, Siteground almost had a 100% uptime rate which was marred by just 10 to 12 minutes of downtime during the entire time frame. We consider it to be one of the most reliable web hosts that we have worked with in recent times.

Scalability: While most webhosts will be looking to upgrade you to their most premium package, Siteground will explain the best option for you and help you scale slowly as your business grows.

Cost: The Startup plan is the most basic shared hosting plan and costs $3.95/mo. whereas their dedicated hosting plans start from $229/mo. That's not the cheapest hosting plan around. And if you are looking purely at saving some money upfront, then you might find Hostgator to be a better choice.

Reputation: Sitegrounds claim to fame has been the superb customer support team. They do not have a pricing advantage. But customers who prefer to have the backup of a strong support team and some very good features with their host, prefer Siteground over other companies.

Final Verdict: Siteground retains its #3 spot in the top 5 web hosting companies for a reason. They have a bevy of features and back it up with a strong support team, who will always be there when you need them. → Go for it.

With three different Linux based shared hosting plans as well as dedicated and VPS, there was no reason why InMotion Hosting couldn't have been our #1 choice for a web hosting company. But the lack of Windows Servers and managed WordPress hosting services along with a dated website builder tool, pegs it below some of the other companies that we have written about.

Inmotion Hosting has a loyal customer base that swears on the super friendly onboarding that the company has and a bundle of free e-commerce tools that it provides.

Key Features: 1 free .com domain, 24/7 tech support, Unlimited disk space (remember our inode warning), 90-day money back guarantee, Free backups, SSDs on all disks, 1 click install for WordPress.

Services: InMotion Hosting offers three Linux-based shared Web hosting plans with limitations on the number of sites and domains you can host. They do offer unlimited email, storage, and monthly data transfers on all their plans. Their VPS hosting plans boast of the best in-class features and the dedicated hosting is where they really shine with 15TB monthly data transfers and 16GB RAM.

Customer Support: While the customer support is easy to deal with, they can be difficult to contact. On two occasions, we had to wait for over 15 minutes to get connected to a customer support rep on Chat. On phone, we tried to contact the manager twice and were unable to. While it is not a deal breaker, it certainly doesn't paint a rosy picture, especially if you are desperate for a quick solution.

Uptime: It has a 99.99% uptime which is the best in-class. It is one of the most reliable web hosts in the market currently.

Scalability: With some of the best dedicated server plans and VPS plans in the business, if you are looking at a scalable web host, then it is one of the best choices you have.

Cost: At $5.99 with a promotion thrown in for their most basic shared server plan, It is not the cheapest option you have. Does the service justify the price? It's a close call with other web hosts like Bluehost offering a much better pricing advantage.

Reputation: Other than a few minor hiccups with the customer support, It is one of the very few companies that has never had a meltdown in the past few years which caused their reputation to tank.

Final Verdict: it is a reliable web host with a US based customer support team and the best in-class hosting features for their dedicated plan. They are not the cheapest web host around. But with a bundle of impressive features and a solid reputation, they are one of the best choices you have. → Go for it.

With more than 26% of the world's websites using WordPress, having a dedicated WordPress managed hosting service is always a plus. WPengine strives to be that service. It has a many pros and a few cons which put it on the fifth position of our list of the best hosting companies in the world.

For starters, It isn't the most cost effective hosting service we have reviewed. But they offer enough features for anyone looking for hands-free WordPress hosting. Everything that one needs to do manually is taken care of.

Key Features: Daily backups, 24/7 support from WordPress experts, firewall, malware scan, evercache technology to speed up the websites, SSL ready, CDN ready, timely speed reports.

Services: WP Engine offers 5 different hosting plans for WordPress sites. The most basic plan which allows just one WordPress install is priced at $29/mo. The most advanced business plan for up to 25 WordPress sites is priced at $249/mo. They also have enterprise level plans which will be based on a custom pricing.

Customer Support: Top notch. There is nothing WordPress related that these guys cannot help you with. It's a qualified team of WordPress experts at your fingertips.

Uptime: It has a 99.99% uptime guarantee which is the standard in the industry these days. Any lesser and that would make people turn up their noses.

Scalability: Some of the big Fortune 500 companies are hosted on their servers. So, scalability should not be a problem while hosting with these guys.

Cost: Not the most budget friendly choice. But it is specialized and completely managed hosting service which does offer premium services. It gives you the much needed assurance that your WordPress site is using the most bulletproof security measures to protect it from hacking attacks.

Reputation: They have a stellar reputation mainly due to the quality of hosting and the super-fast customer support team.

Final Verdict: If you are not a picky customer who's bothered about the monthly pricing too much and have several WordPress websites/ blogs that you would like managed without too much fuss, then this is your best bet. → Go for it.
