What you need to know to be an Airbnb host or guest

I HAVE been using Airbnb as both host and guest for three years, so if you are thinking of getting involved ahead of the peak holiday season, here are the lessons I have learnt.

KOCHIE: Nine traits of great entrepreneurs

As a guest

I first used Airbnb when travelling to the USA in 2014.

We found an apartment in the east village of Manhattan for $170 a night, which was around a third the price of any decent hotels, so we jumped at it. We also secured a discounted townhouse in Washington DC's Georgetown. Both places had their shortcomings, but were fantastic for what we paid. Since then we have stayed in Airbnb properties in Mexico, Denmark and even Lake Como.

As a guest, you should adjust your expectations. Staying in someone's private home is not the same as a hotel. There will be less space and the obvious presence of other people - pictures on the wall, food in the fridge and personalised Netflix settings.

Hosts must be transparent, so a listing often says "not much space", or "very lived in". If you see that and go ahead with the booking, you can't turn around and complain when it's not like the last five-star hotel you stayed in. In Copenhagen I had to unclog the drain of the shower on the first day after it began flooding, a horrendous, dry-retching experience … but the price was right.

When it comes time to review the host, be reasonable. Think about whether they lived up to their own promises and whether it's really necessary to burn them on a public forum for potential future guests to see. We stayed quiet on the clogged drain, as well as keys not working properly, bicycles advertised as part of the deal ending up being rusted with flat tyres and other things. We figured it was karma.

As a host

Karma doesn't always come through, as evidenced by complaints we've received. One guy bought his family of four into our small two-bedroom unit and complained the shower ran out of hot water. He also moaned his sons weren't comfortable on our fold-out … even though we warned him before booking it was not suitable for two teen boys. Our pillows not being fluffy enough was another bit of feedback.

Then there are the party types. We once came home to find a container of cigarette butts and other trash at our front door with a note reading: "clean up your filth". Our young guests had hosted a party, making a whole lot of noise and throwing rubbish off our balcony, to the dismay of our innocent neighbours below. From there, we learned to accept mainly young parents and older couples as guests.

Still, most guests have been great. People tend to treat the place with more respect because they know it's someone's home.

We don't rent ours out very often. Usually we book guests in when we are on holidays ourselves and that is where the financial benefit really comes in. We were once away for a month and had guests in our place for two weeks of that time. The money took care of our international flights, which made the holiday even more enjoyable and there were beers left in the fridge, which suited me fine.

SPENDING: How to cut costs this Christmas

Another benefit is that Airbnb will come and take professional photos of your place for free to use on the website listing.

So the money side can be great, but remember any income you earn must be declared at tax time, or you risk hefty fines. Talk to an accountant, because you may be able to claim expenses on parts of the property depending on your situation.

7 Vital Hosting Features For eCommerce Stores

Whilst great hosting is important for all websites, if you run an eCommerce store, your entire business relies on it. What's more, online stores have their own particular needs which can't always be met by a regular hosting package. In this post, we'll explain what hosting features an eCommerce website requires so that you can make a more informed choice for your business.

    1. Hosting for your eCommerce platform

When you set up an eCommerce website, you'll have a choice over the type of platform you use to create it. The two most popular platforms are WordPress and Magento. Both these come with a range of plugins and extensions that enable you to create attractive, feature-rich and high performing online shops.

However, platforms like these have their own quirks and hosting demands. The best way to ensure these are catered for is to choose a hosting package that has been designed especially for the platform. Dedicated WordPress hosting and Magento hosting packages provide the server configurations, computing resources and performance that these platforms need to run optimally.

    2. Hosting which suits your technical skill

If you run an online store, you'll need to maintain it and regularly update the range of products you are selling. This will require some element of technical skill on your part as you'll need to do these things by accessing the control panel of your hosting account and your platform.

Once again, choosing the right platform with which to build your site is an important decision. One of the reasons WordPress and Magento are so popular is because they can be used to create websites fairly easily, without the need for coding skills.

Even if you are having the website built for you, both WordPress and Magento provide user-friendly admin panels from which it is easy to update your site. Adding new content and products, changing prices, etc., can be done easily and quickly.

In addition, you also want your hosting admin panel to be easy to navigate. The best choices for this are the cPanel and Plesk control panels, which are designed to make light work of administrative tasks such as updating software or backing up your website. So, whilst you'll need to learn some basic technical aspects of running a site, the actual carrying out of the work is easy to do.

    3. Make sure your package has adequate storage

eCommerce sites need more storage than the average business website. You'll need a separate page for each product that you sell and for each of those products, you'll need a product description, specification and possibly customer reviews. In addition, most products have several images and each of these images will have different sized copies: thumbnail, medium, large and full size. This means, if you sell 250 products, you could have 4,000 product images that need storing.

Add to this all the other information you need for each product; SKU, product identification numbers, prices, size options, delivery information, etc. and you can see why storage can be an issue.

When looking for a hosting package, make sure that it comes with the storage you need, not just for now but the future. You won't want to be restricted in the number of products you can sell because your storage capacity is too small.

    4. Look for high-performance servers

Choosing a host that provides high-performance servers can boost the speed at which your site loads on customers' computers, tablets and smartphones. This can have two very important benefits. Firstly, faster websites rank higher in search engine results and, secondly, quick loading sites sell more. According to KissMetrics, slow loading sites cause people to leave before a page has even loaded. Just a one-second delay can shrink conversions by as much as 7%. If you sell £500 of products a day, that delay can cost you over £12,000 a year in lost business.

Check your hosting carefully to see that the servers are up to speed. Also make sure that your package provides adequate CPU, RAM and bandwidth and has other features that can speed up your site, such as caching.

    5. Reliable uptime

If you sell on the internet, people around the world can access your site at any time of the day. It's a 24-hour market. What you don't need is a site that goes offline. Every time this happens, you potentially lose a sale. At the same time, if people search for your site and it isn't available, it gives your brand a poor reputation.

This can happen with poor quality hosting. If you opt for shared hosting, you need a host who can guarantee you 99.9% uptime. If you use VPS, cloud or dedicated server hosting, look for high availability packages that guarantee 99.99% uptime or better. This way, you know your store will always be open for business.

    6. Security for your customers' data

The security of your customers' data has to be a high priority for any eCommerce company and there are regulations you will need to comply with to ensure data is kept securely. For example, if you take credit card payments, you will need to comply with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS).

Your web host can play a vital role in helping keep your site secure and in assisting with compliance. For example, they should be able to provide you with an SSL certificate so that payment details are encrypted when a customer buys from you. In addition, they should be able to offer intrusion and malware monitoring to prevent hackers breaking in or your site getting infected.

    7. 24/7 technical support

When you operate 24 hours a day, it's good to know that, should you need it, expert technical support is available 24/7. Things can go wrong for many reasons: you may install conflicting plugins, accidentally delete an essential file or get infected by ransomware.

Choosing a provider that provides 24/7 technical support is the best way to ensure that these issues are resolved quickly and your business gets back online. Most hosts will offer 24/7 customer service, but this doesn't always mean technical support. Customer service may just be a call centre, not necessarily an expert who can help you there and then. There is a big difference, so, only use a web host that offers 24/7 technical support, 365 days a year, via telephone, email and online chat.

    Conclusion

From reading this article you should now have a better understanding of the things an eCommerce business should be looking for in a web host and a hosting package. Hopefully, this will be useful in helping you find the right web host for your online store.

Nancy Zieman, Host of Long-Running Sewing Show, Dies at 64

Nancy Zieman, who became an unlikely television star through the humblest of shows, "Sewing With Nancy," which ran for 35 years on public television, died on Nov. 14 at her home in Beaver Dam, Wis. She was 64.

The cause was cancer, said an announcement from Wisconsin Public Television, which produced the show. On Sept. 2, Ms. Zieman wrote a post titled "Time to Say Goodbye" on her website, telling fans that she was retiring and that one of the cancers first diagnosed in 2015 had metastasized.

"I am finding great peace today," she wrote, "knowing that I can thank you for your many years of dedication, viewership and fr iendship."

Nancy Lea Luedtke was born on June 21, 1953, in Neenah, Wis. Her father, Ralph, and her mother, the former Barbara Larson, owned a farm. She learned to sew as a child; for her first sewing project for the local 4-H Club, she made a gathered skirt and fringe scarf.

She graduated from Winneconne High School in 1971 and majored in textiles and journalism at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Her first job was working for a fabric chain, Minnesota Fabrics.

"They had a propensity to hire farm kids, mainly because of their work ethic," Ms. Zieman said in a 2007 interview.

There she met Richard Zieman, whom she married in 1977. In 1979 she started a mail-order sewing-supply business, Nancy's Notions, which in 1982 led a Milwaukee fabric store to ask her to host a sewing program. It first ran on the nascent Satellite Program Network.

"Cable TV was in its infancy, and thankfully not many people watched the show because I was really green in front of the camera," Ms. Zieman said.

After about a dozen shows, the store concluded that the effort wasn't profitable, but Ms. Zieman decided to try to do a version on her own. Wisconsin Public Television began broadcasting "Sewing With Nancy" in September 1982, and it was soon being picked up by public television outlets across the United States and in Canada.

Ms. Zieman reached a substantial audience of serious sewers and casual ones, delivering tips on stitching, quilting, sewing shortcuts and more. There was nothing flashy about the programs, or about Ms. Zieman's repartee; just straightforward advice, delivered with geniality.

She also published numerous sewing books and made appearances at expos and other events, like one called Sewing Extravaganza in 1992 in Florida that drew 360 people.

"The TV sewing guru had celebrity status with the attendees," The St. Petersburg Times wrote. "They crowded aro und Zieman, who was smartly dressed in a turquoise and pink suit that she made herself."

Ms. Zieman was a go-to interview for reporters trying to support a trend of increased interest in sewing, and she had a no-nonsense explanation of that apparent phenomenon.

"We want to feel creative," she said, "and sewing gives us the chance to create when sometimes work does not."

Ms. Zieman was a counterintuitive candidate for TV personality. When she was 14 months old, an ear infection led to Bell's palsy, a condition that resulted in partial paralysis of the right side of her face and a noticeably asymmetrical appearance. Only in 2011, after hundreds of episodes, did she address the subject on the air, after she had received a rude awakening when she did an internet search on her name.

"The quick search that comes from Google had 'Nancy Zieman face,' 'Nancy Zieman smile,' 'Nancy Zieman stroke,' " she told The Beaver Dam Daily Citizen. "I thought, no 'Nancy Zieman sewing'? No 'Nancy Zieman quilting'?

"I had to pick up my ego from the floor and then say, well, I understand. I understand why people would want to know about this, because it's unusual to have someone on television who is not picture perfect."

The epis ode in which she talked about Bell's palsy, and a related blog post, drew a huge response.

"Mail and blog comments prove that something about what happened to me has helped others cope with their own challenges," Ms. Zieman wrote in her autobiography, "Seams Unlikely: The Inspiring True Life Story of Nancy Zieman," written with Marjorie L. Russell and published in 2013. "I find that both humbling and exciting."

Ms. Zieman is survived by her husband; two sons, Ted and Tom; her mother, Barbara Eckstein; two brothers, John and Dean Luedtke; a sister, Gina Crispell; and three grandchildren.

She is also survived by, a ccording to her own count, 910 episodes of "Sewing With Nancy."

"The last episode that we recorded is 'I Sew for Fun,' a show on team sewing with kids ages 5-9," she wrote in her farewell post. "My granddaughters will be featured. I marvel at this miracle."

Musings on a Decade of WordPress: Themes, Plugins, News, Hosting, and More

I've been sitting on the idea of this post for some time because I've not been sure how to best articulate it. Some of us are better than words with others and all that.

But I thought since it's been a while since I've written anything beyond a technical post, that maybe I'd use this time (you know, during the whole upcoming holiday season and all that), to share some thoughts, opinions, and observations on all things WordPress.

For those who live and die by hit pieces or the "…you'll never believe what happens next" stuff we're used to seeing on so many social media outlets, this is not that post.

Instead, this is one person who has been working with WordPress in a professional capacity for close to a decade in a technical way who's simply sharing observations.

    There's a lyric I like:

Opinions are immunity from being told you're wrong.

Maybe that works here, maybe not. I don't know. But I'm going to open comments on this post, and although I may not respond to them, I'm genuinely interested in other people's take on their experience with WordPress.

Musings on a Decade of WordPress

Anyway, all of this may seem somewhat scattered. That's not my intent, but it's certainly something that happens when you go to share a conglomeration of thoughts into a single post.

Consider all of the above a preface and all that stuff.

    How WordPress is Used

One of the things about the word WordPress is that it means some different things to different people. This is interesting because so few other segments of the technology industry are used in such a way.

    For example, WordPress is used:

  • when referring to a blogging platform,
  • as a content-management system,
  • as a group of people,
  • is used a platform on which people develop,
  • can be used to build, sell, and market products.
  • and so many more things.
  • Despite the fact that there are a wide variety of other platforms available, few people refer to their part of the industry like this. I certainly didn't experience in .NET, and I'd venture to say that others don't do the same when referring to Objective-C or Swift or any other language.

We see similar behavior in the world of PHP a bit, but that's more an exception than the rule.

Now, I recognize that comparing a piece of software like WordPress to a language like Swift isn't a real comparison. But the point I'm trying to make is that when you can break the conceptual model of what WordPress is to you it opens the eyes to just how wide it really reaches.

At this point, it seems almost natural that other authors might get into the social or political issues surrounding the software (which is cool, to be clear, but that's their thing). I don't care to do that. And it really has nothing to do with what I'm trying to say.

In short, that's someone else's job, and we have some great outlets who already do that in their terms (and there are other groups in which you can participate if you feel inclined to do so).

That said, this offers us the ability to do some really neat things on our part of the technological economy that others don't necessarily get to do.

    Musings on the WordPress Economy

I don't have much to say here, but I feel as if I'm leaving a bit out if I don't opt to at least mention it.

First, there have been two really good pieces that I recommend reading or listening to as far as this is concerned:

  • Interview with Matt Mullenweg on the WordPress ecosystem
  • The Blue-Collar WordPress Worker and the 2,500+ Websites Built to Grow the CMS
  • With that said, the idea of "the WordPress economy" is interesting because it seems that many people talk about it as if it should be a fixed thing. For example, many of us have watched, participated in, and even gotten out of the idea of themes. There are a lot of reasons for that, but perhaps the number one reason is this:

    An economy is organic.

This is why there are entire fields of study dedicated not only to the economy of any given nation as a whole but a segment of a nation. And if we drill-down even further into the business of any nation (and I'm really speaking about the United States because it's where I live and work), we know that the businesses that exist in that nation have economies of their own.

    Themes

WordPress is not exempt from any of that. Thus, that's why we've seen what some call "the race to the bottom" when it comes to themes. Does this mean themes are dead?

    No. Absolutely not.

Musings of a Decade of WordPress: Array Themes

In fact, there are some shops that I admire and one that I'll endorse at every single opportunity I get.

    Plugins

Others are seeing what plugins are capable of doing. Some are building incredibly successful businesses around plugins-as-products.

Musings of a Decade of WordPress: Shop Plugins

And some are even doing so regarding building shops on top of the businesses of other companies. Yes, that's companies being built on top of companies being built on top of WordPress.

    News

And what about the idea of ideas? We literally have business not only publishing news, podcasts, and so on, but hosting conferences, too.

Musings of a Decade of WordPress: Post Status

Again, we now have a business that's built a business reporting on the ins-and-outs of what's going on in our economy that allows us to interface with each other in a variety of ways.

    Custom Solutions

Personally, I'm in the business of building custom solutions with others and for others on top of WordPress.

Musings of a Decade of WordPress: Pressware

I don't say "with WordPress" for reasons that are outside the scope of this post, but that's beside the point.

    Education

We also have others that are in the business of using WordPress in terms of education in a variety of ways. How's that for a unique position?

Musings of a Decade of WordPress: WPSessions

And WP Sessions is but one example. There are some other companies out there who are just starting and others who are established but focusing on their nichƩ of the industry.

    Hosting

Finally, though there's no much to say about it, I think it's worth mentioning that hosting is almost not even worth talking about because when you have a web application, you need hosting.

    There's not much to it.

But one thing I really like seeing is that there some hosts that are tailoring their offering for developers. That is, they understand those who want to use tools such as Composer, build processes, continuous integration, and so on.

A few years ago, these didn't exist and setting them up was much harder to set those up if that's how you like to build your tools.

Musings of a Decade of WordPress: Pantheon

Naturally, this is something that grows as people who need that type of pipeline work, so it's been really interested to see. But I do think it's safe to say that we're moving away from cPanel as the end-all-be-all of hosting.

Now we're moving into developer-centric tooling, pipelines, and so on. And that's a good thing.

My Post on WordPress About WordPress

Maybe you'll chalk this post up to pure meta. "Oh, there's a post about WordPress written on WordPress from someone who works in WordPress." And that's cool if that's your thing.

But aren't some of the people who may have insight on to any other topic, such as movies or music, the people in that industry?

Ultimately, it seems that some seem to believe the WordPress economy should be a fixed, monolithic being. But nowhere else in other segments do we see that.

    What About You?

And if we did, then I'd argue WordPress would be irrelevant and essentially dead long before I hit the Publish button on this post.

What's your take from wherever you sit?

Amazon Web Services Announces Secret Cloud Region For CIA

Amazon Web Services unveiled a cloud computing region for the CIA and other intelligence community agencies developed specifically to host secret classified data.

The AWS Secret Region will allow the 17 intelligence agencies to host, analyze and run applications on government data classified at the secret level through the company's $600 million C2S contract, brokered several years ago with the CIA. AWS already provides a region for the intelligence community's top secret data.

"Today we mark an important milestone as we launch the AWS Secret Region," said Teresa Carlson, vice president of AWS Worldwide Public Sector. "AWS now provides the U.S. intelligence community a commercial cloud capability across all classification levels: unclassified, sensitive, secret and top secret. "The U.S. intelligence community can now execute their missions with a common set of tools, a constant flow of the latest technology and the flexibility to rapidly scale with the mission."

The AWS Secret Region is essentially its own commercial data center air-gapped—or shut off—from the rest of the internet. CIA Chief Information Officer John Edwards views the new region as a key step in commercial cloud computing technology that has already changed the way the IC handles data and addresses cybersecurity.

In addition to hosting, storing, analyzing and allowing various applications to ingest classified data, AWS also stood up an IC Marketplace, which allows intelligence agencies to download, test and buy software from companies based in Silicon Valley and elsewhere. Cloud computing, Edwards said, is game-changing technology that provides a constant stream of innovation and is more secure than the CIA's own internal data centers.

"The AWS Secret Region is a key component of the intel community's multi-fabric cloud strategy. It will have the same material impact on the IC at the Secret level that C2S has had at Top Secret," Edwards said in a statement.

    Establishing Cloud Dominance?

Amazon Web Services is the most profitable division of business giant Amazon, and it is recognized as the dominant private-sector commercial cloud services provider, serving major customers like Netflix. AWS further signaled its intent to corner the growing $8.5 billion federal cloud computing market in opening a new East Coast corporate headquarters in Fairfax County and unveiling a new computing region for government customers. The company also recently announced it can host the Defense Department's most sensitive, unclassified data.

The AWS Secret Region strengthens AWS' position as "a dominant player" in the federal cloud computing market, according to Katell Thielemann, research vice president at Gartner, Inc.

The Defense Department, which spends some $40 billion on IT each year, has the most unlocked potential in cloud computing spend, and AWS, Microsoft and IBM each have early contracts in place to serve military agencies.

The AWS Secret Region will also be available to non-intelligence community agencies with appropriate secret-level network access, like military agencies, according to an AWS official, but they would have to use their own contract vehicles and not the C2S contract.

Thielemann said the secret region is likely to entice new customers who favor speed to market and rapid innovation. It will also be attractive for agencies with large mixtures of both secret and top secret data.

"One of the big things is that AWS has had an impact with regard to the ability of organizations under the IC umbrella to better share information," Thielemann said. "They have an ability to bring new tools into the environment that were very difficult to adopt previously—things like geospatial tools, advanced analytics and data dissemination. What is compelling about cloud environments and the reason why the rest of the world has ran to them is that once you're in these more modern platforms, you're no longer beholden to a hardware-centric view of the world."

Airbnb host says guest stole wife's purse, credit cards

    Airbnb Concerns

EL PASO, Texas - The holidays are just around just around the corner and that means booking travel and hotel plans.

Thousands of people will likely choose the route of booking a "rent-a-room service" via Airbnb, a popular website to book short-term rentals in other people's homes.

Airbnb is located throughout the world with more than 300 rental options in El Paso alone. Some borderland "hosts" are concerned after they claim a guest stole personal information.

Several Airbnd hosts reached out to ABC-7, saying they have had to freeze credit cards and are worried what other personal information was stolen.     Christian Maldonado said his wife have been hosting guests from around the country for more than a year.

They never had any issues up until last week, when they say a local guest stole his wife's wallet while they were away and charged nearly $500 worth of items on her credit card.

The couple filed a police report an contacted other hosts, warning them about situation. Maldonado tells me that's when they learned several other hosts had the same issue with the same guest.

Now, they hope others will take caution before allowing guests inside their home:

"I think, especially for my wife, because it was her personal information and just kind of the ripple affects it's caused us, the money, the time she's had to take off work, but also for me, seeing my wife frustrated with this stuff. it really puts us in a bad place," Air BnB host Christian Maldonado.

ABC-7 is not identifying the suspected thief because he has not charged with a crime at this point.

Laura Rillos, with Airbnb, emailed ABC-7 the following statement:

"We have permanently banned this guest from our platform and we are assisting the authorities with their investigation. Airbnb runs background checks on all US hosts and guests and we are looking into what happened in this case. We are offering our full support to the affected hosts, including offering to pay for a year of credit monitoring and reimbursement for stolen items."

How To Find Reliable Web Hosting In The UK

Web hosting companies in UK rent space on their servers for your website data to be stored on and allow users to access it through the Web. That is why choosing a reliable provider is crucial for the life and successful growth of your website.

    Web Hosting UK Article Image

IMAGE: PEXELS What Do Web Hosting Providers Offer?

There are several types of hosting for you to choose from, depending on your needs and budget. If you are low on money and a first-time hosting customer, sign up for shared hosting – where you share space on the same server with many other users.

As your budget and website grow, you are able to choose to switch to Cloud servers (VPS hosting), which offer you a bigger portion of the server space. However, if you wish to go big, choose either dedicated hosting with its numerous luxury features or co-located hosting, which enables you to purchase the entire server and have complete control over it.

Web hosting is different from hosting your domain name, though. You either choose to go with separate companies, diversifying your risks. Or sign with one company to cover all the hosting work for you, keeping all the hosting resources in the same account, since many domain hosts will include free transfers and migrations.

    What Do You Need?

Your hosting needs are determined by the type of website you are launching. If you are writing a blog, use a provider experienced with WordPress. If you are launching an online store, use the one offering the best eCommerce options.

If you are looking to produce an online portfolio, use a website builder for the best results. For personal purposes, opt for minimal costs or use a website building program, while for business purposes, be sure to find a provider capable of hosting your expected growth.

    Details And Features

he most important feature for you to pay close attention to before signing with a hosting company is the quality of its security and customer support. They should be excellent in order for your website to work efficiently, dealing with any problems arising in the shortest amount of time.

A good provider uses firewalls, monitoring services, and the best one has an automatic backup set up. Customer support should be easily reached, with low promised response time and a collection of help articles and tutorials placed at your disposal.

Uptime rates are another very important feature and they should be as close to 100% as possible, Since time is money, your business could be losing money every second that your website is down, Lastly, make sure the storage and bandwidth are sufficient enough to support data transfer and many people accessing your website's content at the same time.

    How To Choose?

There are many companies offering web hosting services in the UK today. It is crucial to pair your needs with their features for the relationship to be long-lasting, as switching from one provider to another can be a tiring process, costing you time and money.

To begin with, do your research and compare features that different companies include in their hosting packages before you start comparing prices. Usually, a simple Google search won't cut it and you need to dig deeper. To make it easier for you, go to websites such as MangoMatter and find ratings stored in tables for an easy overview to help you find your ideal web host.

    Conclusion

When looking for the right web host, try to avoid free web hosting, but don't stray from affordable options. A good provider doesn't have to be the most expensive one.

Look really carefully into a company's specialty or area of expertise before you make a choice. Go with the company that understands your needs and offers the highest quality at the lowest cost possible.

HostGator Review: When You Can't Afford Downtime, This Cloud Hosting Service Delivers

HostGator beat the competition in a few categories as we reviewed the best web hosting platform, but before we look at them in particular, let's consider why this choice is so important if you own a small business. In the search for reliable web hosting services for your company, one of the most important factors is uptime. But what exactly is uptime?

This all-important feature can be a little misleading in the way it's presented. Most companies report their uptime as a percentage, such as 99.99 percent or 99.998 percent uptime. That means that a particular server hosting your website will be up that percentage of time. While that may sound great, let's take a look at what uptimes below 100 percent can mean for your business.

Uptime and Its Effect on Your Business

If you calculate these percentages using days, hours and minutes, they become far more eye-opening. Let's start with 99.9 percent uptime. It's hard to get much better than that, but here's  how often your business website could be down.

The Best Web Hosting Services for Small Businesses

Finding the best web hosting service for your business can be very confusing. Here's what you should look for.

A 99.9 percent uptime equals 1.4 minutes per day, 9.8 minutes per week and 42 minutes per month. Over a year that adds up to 8.5 hours - a full business day lost. That means a day that your customers can't get in touch with you, can't perform a transaction with you and can't give you their money.

If you rely on your website for customer interaction, particularly e-commerce transactions, this downtime can become very costly.

Obviously, hosting services understand this, and those dedicated to providing a quality product do everything they can to ensure uptimes are as close to 100 percent as possible.

Cloud Hosting Is a Solid Solution

One way some hosting services are doing this is through VPS or cloud hosting. Through the redundancy of multiple servers, they're able to provide more stability so your site stays online, meaning your customers can reach you whenever they need to.

VPS or cloud hosting has become more common the last few years, and understandably so. The number of companies doing business online has only grown, and they need reliable services to keep their sites up and running.

    More Information on HostGator

    HostGator: Why it Wins

Our favorite cloud hosting service is the same as our favorite overall hosting service: HostGator. It's just hard to beat HostGator's pricing, packages of services, scalability and customer support.

HostGator's cloud hosting starts at $4.95 per month (the introductory offer at the time of this writing) for 2 cores of CPU, 2GB of memory, and unmetered bandwidth and storage. And with HostGator's low-density servers and multiple caching layers, you'll likely experience significantly faster load times as well.

If you require more, HostGator offers a business cloud package with unlimited domains, 6 cores of CPU and 6GB of memory. It also comes with unlimited parked domains and subdomains, plus unmetered bandwidth and storage.

Best of all, if you're just starting out and aren't sure you need something as robust as cloud hosting, HostGator offers shared web hosting, so you can start small and grow as your business grows. Likewise, HostGator lets you easily upgrade to a dedicated server if you outgrow its cloud hosting capabilities, ensuring your website is ready to handle all the traffic your hard work has earned you.

4 Tips to Find Basic Web Hosting That Fits Your Small Business Needs

Choosing a hosting service for your company's website can be a laborious endeavor. To start, there are dozens of hosting services offering a wide array of features at varying prices. And, as with many products, a lot of promises can be made that never quite get fulfilled once you've signed up for service.

With that in mind, we took a look at some of the best web hosting deals for small business owners who don't want to spend a lot of money as they launch their e-commerce site.

Web Hosting Tip #1: Look for Promotional Pricing

First, we considered price. Companies often offer promotional pricing to get you in the door. This can be a great way to save money while you try out their services, but  check whether they have a money-back guarantee and for how long that guarantee is good. If you're dissatisfied with the service, you'll feel better knowing you can walk away during that money-back period.

One caveat with money-back guarantees: Some services don't let you transfer a domain name you've purchased through them, so be sure it's transferable in case you do abandon ship.

Web Hosting Tip #2: Be Sure the Pricing Is Honest

Some web hosting services throw out a price that looks amazing, but upon closer inspection, you realize it offers only the bare minimum of tools to build your site. There's an upcharge for every little thing  beyond the basic. Want email? That's extra. How about an e-commerce store? Yep, shell out some more. SEO tools? You know the answer.

That's why it's important to do thorough research, know exactly what tools and services you need going in and exactly what they'll cost you.

Web Hosting Tip #3: Make Sure the Service Is Worth the Price

As with most things in life, you get what you pay for. The biggest complaints we've seen about lower-price web hosting services are slower uploads and greater downtimes. Both can keep your online business from thriving. Be clear on what the uptimes and load times are among the services you're considering. Paying a little more to ensure you get good quality can definitely be beneficial in the long run.

Web Hosting Tip #4: Confirm You Can Transfer Your Domain

Some web hosting services don't allow customers to transfer domain names when they decide to move to another hosting service. This can be a major hassle for obvious reasons. BlueHost, however, provides simple, clear instructions on how you can take your domain with you.

Our Pick for the Best Basic Web Hosting: BlueHost

In making our selection, we took all of the above into consideration, plus the scalability of the services that the web hosts offer. We chose BlueHost as the cheapest web hosting option for small businesses. Here's why:

Introductory offer: At the time of this writing, BlueHost had a phenomenal introductory offer of $5.45 per month (regularly $14.99 per month ). No, it's not the lowest price offered among hosting services, but here's what it includes:

  • Unlimited websites

  • Unmetered website space

  • Unmetered bandwidth

  • Free SSL certificate

  • Unlimited parked domains

  • Unlimited subdomains

  • Unlimited email accounts

  • Unlimited email storage

  • Spam experts

  • Site Backup Pro

  • Domain privacy

  • On top of all of this, BlueHost offers 24/7 support, reliable uptimes, one-click WordPress installation and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Best of all, BlueHost's services are scalable, so you can upgrade as your business and site grow. BlueHost also offers cloud hosting.

The Best Web Hosting Services for Small Businesses

If you're a small business owner in the throes of launching your own e-commerce website - or upgrading your existing one - you probably know you need a web hosting service. You probably also know that there are more services out there than you can shake a well-crafted, artisanal walking stick at.

There are dozens of companies to choose from, many of which provide different tiers of services. Will a shared hosting service suffice? Do you need dedicated hosting? Should you specialize with WordPress hosting? What's the difference between all of the available services?

We're going to break it down for you, starting with how shared, cloud, VPS, dedicated hosting and other services compare, which service may work best for your situation and which companies stand out across categories, according to our research.

Ultimately, your best decision lies in understanding your needs as a business owner and talking about those needs with numerous service providers before making your final choice.

    Different Types of Web Hosting

There are some key differences between the different types of hosting, so it's important to understand your short- and long-term goals for your website and which services will handle not only your needs today, but can grow along with your business. Here are some of the primary types of web hosting currently available.

    Shared Hosting

The least expensive web hosting option is shared hosting. It is pretty much what it sounds like. You share a server provided by the hosting company with other businesses. This can be a good option if you don't have, or expect to have, a lot of customer traffic to your site.

The amount of disk space and bandwidth you have with a shared service are limited, and you'll be charged if you surpass the amount you've purchased in your package. Obviously, shared hosting can be limiting for a growing e-commerce site but a great place to start to grow your online presence.

    Managed WordPress Hosting

Specifically designed for WordPress websites, this can be much faster than generic shared hosting, more secure and even offers better uptime. But it can be restrictive for users who have highly customized WordPress pages because some plug-ins are not supported by various providers. And, in case you were wondering, yes, it is more expensive.

    Dedicated Hosting

Unlike shared hosting, when you buy a dedicated hosting package, you are purchasing a dedicated server for your business that you do not share. This is especially important for sites with heavy traffic or those that expect heavy traffic in the near future. The negative of dedicated hosting is that it tends to be more expensive than shared hosting.

    VPS Hosting

There's a hybrid option available from some web hosting companies called VPS, or Virtual Private Server, which mimics a dedicated server within a shared hosting environment. The benefits of VPS are that it can be significantly cheaper than dedicated hosting while providing similar bandwidth and disk space. Keep in mind that VPS hosting can be significantly more expensive than shared, so if your site traffic doesn't yet warrant an upgrade, you may be spending money unnecessarily. Also, some hosts don't allocate server resources for VPS as well as other services do, so research is crucial in making your final decision.

    Cloud Hosting

Cloud hosting is basically the same thing as VPS hosting. In fact, some providers have abandoned the term VPS altogether. In a nutshell, your hosting is provided across a network of servers instead of just one. This allows for significantly better uptimes for your e-commerce site, with the added benefit of a stronger safeguard against DDoS attacks, which attempt to overwhelm your site with traffic to essentially shut it down.

With all of this in mind, let's get to some of our favorite web hosting services and why we think you should consider them for your e-commerce business.

Best Overall Web Hosting Service: HostGator

Simply put, HostGator offers superior shared, cloud, WordPress, VPS and dedicated web hosting packages. Each of these services includes tiered plans so you can choose the services that are best for your business.

The one negative, in our opinion, is that HostGator offers only Linux servers for its VPS hosting. Its shared and dedicated packages, however, offer both Linux and Windows servers. The service comes with unlimited storage, email and monthly data transfers for all hosting tiers.

HostGator's shared web hosting plans start at $3.95 per month for the most basic service. That includes a single domain, one-click installs and unmetered bandwidth. HostGator recommends its Business Plan as the best basic option, and we agree. It also includes a private Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) security and your own Internet Protocol address, plus free Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone service.

HostGator's dedicated hosting is comparably inexpensive, with its most basic service starting at $119 a month. This Value Server package is comprised of a 4 core/8 thread Intel Xeon-D CPU processor with 8GB RAM and 1TB hard disk drive, unmetered bandwidth and a Linux or Windows OS.

Its most expensive dedicated package, Enterprise Server, starting at $149 per month, includes an 8 core/16 thread Intel Xeon-D CPU processor with 32GB of RAM and 1TB SSD.

What we really like most about HostGator is that its broad range of quality offerings allow your company to start small with exactly the bandwidth and disk space you need, plus enough options that will let you grow slowly or quickly without changing your hosting provider.

Pros: Solid customer service and support, with great uptime across a variety of hosting plans, and highly scalable hosting offerings. Solid website building tools and unlimited data transfers.

Cons: No Microsoft-based option with VPS hosting

    Best Dedicated Hosting: Liquid Web

There are so many considerations when choosing a dedicated hosting service -  price among them - particularly for newer businesses looking to grow. We looked at many contenders, including GoDaddy, Liquid Web, Rackspace, HostGator, 1&1 and Amazon AWS.

We selected Liquid Web as the best dedicated hosting provider for small businesses for several reasons. To start, Liquid Web's customer support is outstanding. The company promises assistance in less than a minute by phone or chat and in less than 30 minutes when you submit a help-desk ticket.

It was this kind of support that led John Gonzales, owner and principal of TRUST Consulting Group in Austin, Texas, to choose Liquid Web to host his company's website.

TRUST, which Gonzales co-founded with his wife, Alicia Pounds, provides electronic onboarding and Work Opportunity Tax Credit management, plus hiring support for a variety of clients across the country.

"We chose a web hosting service when a customer set forth some specific technical standards that required we have a dedicated system," Gonzales said. "We interviewed three companies and focused on service times, server variety, upgrade options, price and what assistance administrators would give.

"The biggest requirement for us was that the server administrators be able to assist with any problem on the server, from SSL certificates to SQL issues, upgrades and user maintenance. Many companies didn't include all of these services or charged extra hourly rates," Gonzales said. "Liquid Web had the best value. They were not the least expensive choice, but their product included many services that were add-ons with other firms. When we need an expert to help us, we know that they are available and willing to help."

Liquid Web's dedicated server hosting begins at $199 a month, offering 4 cores at 3.4 GHz, 16GB RAM, 2 x 250GB SSD Primary Drive, 1TB SATA backup drive and 5TB bandwidth. And, of course, what Liquid Web refers to as "the most helpful humans in hosting."

If dedicated servers aren't right for your company just yet, Liquid Web also offers less expensive services, starting with its Cloud VPS hosting for $29.50 per month (introductory offer). Like HostGator, it's a company you can grow with, but you'll most likely want to have significant web traffic already established to justify the cost.

Pros: Excellent VPS and dedicated plans with high-end specs, solid customer support, excellent scalability, disk space, security and bandwidth

Cons: More expensive than some competitors and no shared hosting plans

    Best All-In-One Hosting Service: GoDaddy

If you're just starting out and you need literally everything - from a domain name (or names), SSL certificates to keep your customer's information secure, access to Windows 365, solid site-builder and online marketing tools AND web hosting - and you want to do it all with one-stop shopping, it's hard to find a service that does a better job than GoDaddy.

Its feature-packed services include great customer service, intuitive and flexible site building tools, and great uptime, so your customers will never be left hanging when trying to get to your site.

In fact, TRUST's Gonzales uses GoDaddy in managing websites for about 50 of his clients.

"We needed a tool that was easy for a nontechnical role to use," Gonzales said. "We were able to hire a nontechnical role to use the GoDaddy web tools, and they can develop a new website in less than a day. While there are limitations with graphics, layouts and integrations, it allows us to deliver a simple, customized website at a value price for our customers."

GoDaddy has extensive tools for finding the domain name(s) you need, robust tools to build your site and a broad range of hosting options that should be able to serve your needs. Basic web hosting starts at $7.99 per month (regular introductory specials lower this price) for a free domain name, 100GB of disk space, unmetered monthly bandwidth and up to 50 FTP users. And, like HostGator, there are Linux and Windows server options. Also like HostGator, GoDaddy offers growth flexibility, meaning you can upgrade your services as your business grows. Keep in mind, however, that your domain name can only be used with GoDaddy hosting, so if you ever leave, you can't take it with you. And unlike HostGator, you won't get free VoIP phone service.

Pros: 24/7 customer support, easy to use, great uptime, relatively inexpensive, solid security, bandwidth and disk space. Scalable services that can grow with your business.

Cons: Domain names cannot be transferred to other host service companies.

Best Web Hosting for Newbies: BlueHost

When it comes to price, ease of setup, use and maintenance, it's hard to beat BlueHost's shared hosting service. It's basically everything a new operation could want.

At the time of this writing, BlueHost has a great introductory offer of $5.45 per month (regularly $14.99 per month ). For that price you get:

  • Unlimited websites

  • Unmetered website space

  • Unmetered bandwidth

  • Free SSL certificate

  • Unlimited parked domains

  • Unlimited sub domains

  • Unlimited email accounts

  • Unlimited email storage

  • Spam experts

  • Site Backup Pro

  • Domain privacy

  • BlueHost also offers 24/7 support, superior security, reliable uptimes, one-click WordPress installation, and offers a 30-day money-back guarantee. Best of all, BlueHost's services are scalable (including cloud hosting), so you can upgrade your services as your business and site grow.

Pros: Most plans include a free domain name for a year, plus  unlimited disk storage, domain hosting, email addresses, and bandwidth. BlueHost offers excellent security and there are many databases available.

Cons: Customer service gets mixed reviews, and the persistent upselling can be annoying.

    Methodology

To find the best hosting services for a wide variety of small businesses, we began by talking to small business owners who each use varying types of hosting services, from shared to VPS and dedicated servers. We asked what features were most important in choosing a hosting service and what features they would change or improve. Across the board, cost, uptime and support were mentioned as the most important features. Scalability of services as business needs and website traffic changed was also important to users, as was security.

Along with talking to users, we did our own extensive research, reading hundreds of online consumer and professional reviews. We then narrowed our list to the 11 most mentioned hosting brands, comparing and contrasting the options offered. We also reviewed service specs and customer resources, among other things.

Based on this research, we developed these criteria to evaluate each product:

  • Cost

  • Scalabilty

  • Uptime

  • Customer support

  • Security

  • Bandwidth

  • Disk space

  • Website building tools

  • Free domain names

  • Ease of use

  • The Rest

In addition to the winners above, we've reviewed several other options worth taking a look at.

    Rackspace

Rackspace was once an industry leader, particularly for dedicated server hosting. The company's "fanatical support" was the stuff of legend. Something has apparently changed in the last few years, though. There are thousands of online complaints about the reduced quality of service. The service and its comparably high prices - starting about $10,000 a year, according to many reports - are the reasons it did not place among our best services. You'll need to request a quote to find out just what Rackspace will charge  to host your business.

    iPage

Like BlueHost, this is a good option for small businesses just launching a website because of the many site building tools available. We didn't recommend it because parent company, Endurance International Group (EIG) is moving customers from other hosting brands it owns (eHost and Host Clear, for example), so we're unsure what kind of impact that may have on services and support.

iPage offers unlimited bandwidth, disk space and email accounts, but there are wide reports of uptime issues. At the time of this writing, iPage was offering an introductory rate of $1.99 per month (regularly $7.99 per month) with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

    eHost & Host Clear

Both of these hosting services, owned by EIG, have been closed to new customers and current customers are being converted to other hosting service brands owned by the company. Phone inquiries are answered, but new service is directed toward EIG's other hosting brand, iPage.

    Site Builder

An all-in-one builder and host with easy-to-use, drag-and-drop tools, Site Builder offers free templates and site building tools. Its most basic shared hosting service costs $8.99 per month but doesn't allow for an e-commerce store. Nor does it offer priority support. For these two features, you'll need to upgrade to the $19.98-per-month plan, which is expensive compared with other shared hosting services.

    1&1 Hosting

Another great service, especially for dedicated server hosting, 1&1 offers Linux and Windows-based servers, exceptional customer support, good bandwidth and disk space, plus excellent uptime. It's a great choice for WordPress hosting. Competitors have longer money-back guarantees, though, and coding of site templates is limited to higher tiers of service.

    Amazon AWS

Amazon offers highly flexible, customizable hosting services at a range of prices, but the options can be overwhelming, especially for beginners. Still, if you know exactly what you need and have the technical savvy to put it all together, Amazon provides great flexibility. Pricing can be as overwhelming as the options. Because virtually anything is possible, you may start with what seems an inexpensive service and end up with something expensive.

Rocket BlueZone Web puts host-based systems in the palm of an employeeĆ¢€™s hand

Sydney, Australia: November 9, 2017 - Rocket Software has introduced Rocket® BlueZone Web, a new terminal emulation product designed to allow users to access mainframe and other host-based systems and data using modern interfaces on mobile devices. BlueZone Web delivers value for host system-driven organisations by empowering their team members to retrieve and use information from anywhere in their systems, on any web browser or tablet, at any time.

"Customers need real-time access to essential business information and functionality, whether they're on their desktop, laptop, tablet, or other mobile device," says Joe Devlin, Vice President of Software Development at Rocket Software. "The era of platform-specific access is over, and today's users expect effortless integration no matter where they are and what device they're using – and they expect all of that information to be secure regardless of what device they're using. BlueZone Web addresses all of these concerns, and is a secure solution for supporting modern infrastructures through browser-based experiences."

Rocket BlueZone Web is a zero-footprint terminal emulator built for mobile use, and is the latest addition to the powerful Rocket Terminal Emulation family of tools. The flexible, plugin-free solution is designed to simplify essential tasks for today's mobile workforces, including retail, warehouse, and office employees, while client-less deployment works to reduce overhead and support costs. BlueZone Web can boost operational efficiency in situations such as warehouse environments, where it saves workers the time it takes to go back and forth to a terminal station. Similarly, retail salespeople - untethered to a desktop terminal - are empowered to remain as focused as possible on the customer while delivering maximum productivity.

BlueZone Web is built on Node.js, JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS3, and offers out-of-the-box authentication ser vice for LDAP and SAP (RACF). The server is suitable for installation on any platform that supports Node.js, and it supports all modern web browsers regardless of device. BlueZone Web is available immediately via download here.
